Fringe Lending: The Case For A National Minimum Standard, Don Loos Apr 2024

Fringe Lending: The Case For A National Minimum Standard, Don Loos

Senior Honors Theses

In the American financial sector, the liberalization of usury laws and legal complexity has allowed for controversial fringe financial products to become widely available. Payday loans, car title loans, and short-term, high-interest installment loans, also referred to as fringe loans, have often been classified as “predatory” and unconscionable. The central question in this controversy is whether increased regulation of fringe loans, or their complete prohibition, is effective to protect consumers from a harmful cycle of debt, or whether regulation will cause more harm than good. Since state legislation is ineffective to limit the negative externalities associated with fringe loans, a …

The Impact Of Different Worldviews On The Financial Planning Process, Luke Osterhus

Senior Honors Theses

An individual's worldview has an effect on all aspects of their life. Worldview affects the decisions people make, the clothes they wear, the people they interact with, and so much more. What is often overlooked is the impact of worldview on one's view and use of money. Money is universal and everyone has some form of currency or assets. However, the way money is used, whether it is saved, spent, or invested, is often determined by an individual's own concept of money. Additionally, relationships between people are often chosen or influenced by an individual's worldview. Human beings are seen differently …

Effects Of Esg Investing On Returns, Hank De Roover

Senior Honors Theses

Countless researchers have sought to find out if there is a positive correlation between Environmental, Societal, and Governance (ESG) investing and returns that beat the market over the past few decades. To analyze what ESG investing is, the history of the practice, and if there can be any conclusion drawn between ESG investing and returns. A deeper understanding of what goes into returns, including modern portfolio theory, will uncover that ESG securities cannot be efficiently placed on the efficient frontier. Risk associated with ESG stocks cannot only be tied directly to beta, but also to external qualitative forces that make …

Impact Of Risk Perception And Risk Tolerance On Investment Portfolio Decisions, Claire Covey

Senior Honors Theses

Average individual investor returns drastically underperform standard investment benchmarks, with common attributing factors including relying on instincts and overconfidence in trading ability. Neural processing, financial risk, risk perception, and risk tolerance literature show how instinctual reactions form and how those reactions affect risk decision-making under the Prospect theory. Examining the effect of neural processing and risk framing on subjective risk perception allows a measurement of the indirect impact on risk tolerance. The stable factors of risk tolerance directly impact investment risk decisions. There are implications of accurately assessing risk tolerance in a client/advisor relationship. Advisor application of a proper risk …

The New Space Policy Regime And Its Financial Foundation, Tamara Campbell May 2021

The New Space Policy Regime And Its Financial Foundation, Tamara Campbell

Helm's School of Government Conference - American Revival: Citizenship & Virtue

Post the global financial crisis of 2008, the National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA) sought to expand the space economy through a public policy of commercialization. This has brought major changes to the composition of space mission funding strategies, now repositioned as public private partnerships (P3s). Formed to fund space missions with private finance in lieu of public funding, P3s are investment and risk-sharing vehicles evaluated by financial intermediary institutions, insurers, and at times, the courts in the case where there is foreign direct investment (FDI) agreement. For this reason, it is arguable P3s have exceptional influence on the scope …

Behavioral Finance For The Individual Investor, Drake Gens Dec 2020

Behavioral Finance For The Individual Investor, Drake Gens

Senior Honors Theses

The Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH) has been generally accepted in academia despite its well-researched flaws; by understanding how and when markets deviate from efficiency, investors have an opportunity to not only better understand their investing habits, but also possibly generate higher investment returns. Various market anomalies, such as the Value Effect (De Bondt & Thaler, 1985), the Monday Effect (French, 1980), and the January Effect (De Bondt and Thaler, 1958 & 1987), attest to the fact that markets experience periods of deviation from efficiency. Fiévet and Sornette (2016) finding that markets experience inefficiency during periods of significant volatility is confirmed …

Small Business, Big Change: How Start-Ups Positively Affect The Community Around Them, Kaylee Spears

Usual measures of success refer commonly to financial means. In a world where success is synonymous with money, small businesses may appear to fall short of the standard. However, these measures do not comprehensively translate to small, family, or start-up companies. Incorrect measurements of success can skew the data when it comes to start-ups and family businesses, but new standards can bring to light just how large an impact small business can make. This thesis seeks to identify better ways to measure success for small businesses through non-financial means, research current examples for relevance, and provide insight for start-ups on …

Payroll Disparity Among Major League Baseball Teams: Building A Competitive Team Despite Limited Resources, Sarah Holtschneider

Senior Honors Theses

There has been an inequality in payroll among Major League Baseball teams for many years that became increasingly evident in the late 1990s. Revenue disparities among teams cause a competitive imbalance for the league and make it harder for small-market teams to compete with large-market teams with much higher payrolls. MLB has attempted to alleviate this disparity, but the implementation of revenue sharing and the competitive balance tax alone is not enough for small-market clubs to build a competitive team. There are a number of ways that small-market clubs can build a competitive team despite limited resources, including employing the …

Senior Honors Theses

The field of behavioral finance has seen incredible growth over the past half century as it has explored the effect that cognitive psychological biases can have on investors’ financial decisions. Behavioral finance stands in stark contrast to the efficient market hypothesis, as it attributes market inefficiencies to investors who are not perfectly rational human beings. It offers a solution to the observed 3.5% gap that active equity investors miss out on in the market compared to passive index funds, which it attributes to their emotions and psychological biases. These common human biases can be grouped into five major categories: heuristics, …

Selecting An Alternative National Banking System Against Fractional Reserve Free Banking: The Greatest Modern Fraud?, Josiah J. Bardy Apr 2017

Selecting An Alternative National Banking System Against Fractional Reserve Free Banking: The Greatest Modern Fraud?, Josiah J. Bardy

Senior Honors Theses

This paper serves as a compilation and analysis of different banking systems with an emphasis on fractional reserve free banking. Contemporary academic literature has debated fractional reserve banking with revisited scrutiny since the 2007–2009 financial crisis. The Austrian School, drawing conclusions from the Austrian business cycle theory, blames central banking for boom-bust economics. One proposed solution, fractional reserve free banking, eliminates the central bank’s control for a purer form of fractional reserve practice; however, this system may be inherently fraudulent and unethical. After completing an economic analysis of the western world’s banking system, this paper then explores an alternative solution.
