Credit History Controls The Ability Of Small Businesses To Obtain Working Capital: A Case Study, Tiffany Leeona Thompson

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this research was to understand how a potential failure of business owners exists and how owners use business credit. In addition, this research includes understanding how business owners obtain working capital within small businesses, resulting in the inability of small businesses to gather the necessary funds to cover the operational costs. I used a flexible design using a qualitative method to gather knowledge from current literature regarding how a lack of credit history in small businesses results in the inability of business owners to obtain working capital. I used a flexible design to identify four elements that …

Detecting Barriers And Drivers To The Adoption Of Circular Business Models In Small Companies From Developed And Developing Countries, Nathalie Touratier-Muller, Nikolina Koporcic, Stefan Markovic, Vesna Damnjanovic

Association of Marketing Theory and Practice Proceedings 2024

Circular business models (CBMs) have become crucial elements of the ecological and social transition of developed as well as developing countries. However, there is a lack of research focusing on small firms that are adopting CBMs, while facing various resource constraints. As small firms are becoming more conscious of the advantages of CBMs, there is a practical need to identify barriers and drivers to the adoption of those models, to accelerate their development trajectory. To contribute to these theoretical and practical needs, in this paper, we consider the CBMs of small firms and focus on a comparison between developed and …

Increasing Workforce Skills: The Possible Disconnect Between Employers And Potential Job Seekers, Cheryl A. Burkhart-Kriesel

Cornhusker Economics

In a multi-year survey of potential job seekers, those who are likely to change jobs in the next year or who are likely to reenter the workforce in the next year, several key training obstacles for improving their employment situation were identified. There seemed to be only slight differences in how they viewed these challenges, regardless of whether they saw their potential job as a career, a steppingstone to a career, or just a job to get by. The cost of training, the lack of available training, the distance or transportation to the training, lack of time, and the knowledge …

Conference papers

The importance of sustainability and entrepreneurship education is highlighted in this study. The world economies are facing significant challenges as they try to enable the transition towards more sustainable economic and business models. Therefore, at the centre of the transition process, it is critical to consider the role that business education can play and, more specifically, the role of business schools in integrating and supporting the development of skills and competencies that align with our contemporary society's needs. In this paper, we initially assess the need to connect entrepreneurial and sustainability education by exploring the educational offerings at Technological University …

The Dimensions Of Entrepreneurial Orientation In Franchise Networks: Exploring The Role Of Franchisee Associations, Peter Balsarini, Claire Lambert

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

This study explores how a state-based franchisee association of a multinational quick-service restaurant franchisor introduced three world-first innovations through the activation of the five dimensions of entrepreneurial orientation (EO). The antecedents to this activation were also explored. A historical extended case study focusing on a revelatory case was undertaken. In-depth analysis using a rigorous qualitative methodology was facilitated by the triangulation of informant interviews, publicly available data, archival data, and artefacts. The three innovations explored involved the apparent activation of all five dimensions of EO by the franchisee association. The franchisee association’s structure and the provenance of its franchisee members, …

Analysis On The Credit Accessibility And Growth Of Manufacturing Firms In The Cases Of Indonesia, Philippines, And Vietnam, Sophia Angela Jimenez, Kamille Daquinag, Maria Regina Victoria Sagrit, Brian Irvin Chan, Albert Lamberte, Maria Zunally Rapada, Krista Danielle Yu

Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)

Micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) contribute to income and employment generation, poverty reduction, and industry growth in the ASEAN region (Mendoza, 2015). Their significant contributions to economies have led countries to emphasize the importance of firm growth, which is influenced by credit accessibility. Majority of existing enterprises in Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam are composed of MSMEs with limited financial resources to foster growth (Paratama, 2019). This hinders the potential of manufacturing MSMEs to have sufficient funding. However, existing literature suggests that credit access significantly provides a positive impact on firm growth only until a certain threshold point (Nizam …

Demand Pull Versus Resource Push Training Approaches To Entrepreneurship: A Field Experiment, Simone Santamaria, Niloofar Abolfathi, Ishtiag Pasha Mahmood

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We compare the efficacy of two broad approaches to entrepreneurship training: a training prioritizing demand-side activities versus a training prioritizing resource-side activities. We do so by running a field experiment inside a 6-month entrepreneurship program involving 236 early-stage entrepreneurs. Inspired by our training, the first group invested more time interacting with potential customers and developing a deep understanding of customer needs and problems. The other group, in contrast, spent more time identifying and exploiting their core resources such as their network. Our results reveal that the training prioritizing demand-side activities is substantially more effective. At the end of the program, …

How To Attract Low Prosocial Funders In Crowdfunding? Matching Among Funders, Project Descriptions, And Platform Types, Yuanqing Li, Frank Cabano, Pingshu Li Aug 2023

How To Attract Low Prosocial Funders In Crowdfunding? Matching Among Funders, Project Descriptions, And Platform Types, Yuanqing Li, Frank Cabano, Pingshu Li

Management and Decision Sciences

The amount of crowdfunding research that investigates funding success factors has been increasing. The existing research shows inconsistent evidence regarding how a prosocial project description affects funding success and largely ignores the issue of alignment/misalignment among different factors in affecting funding success. We suggest that funders’ prosocial motivation can be an important factor for this inconsistent evidence. We integrate the elaboration likelihood model and language expectancy theory and demonstrate distinct decision-making patterns from high and low prosocial motivation funders. Through three experiments, we provide evidence for alignment/misalignment effects among funders’ prosocial motivation, prosocial project descriptions, and platform types (donation-based vs. …

Good Governance, Bad Governance: A Refinement And Application Of Key Governance Concepts, Scott L. Mitchell, Mark D. Packard, Brent B. Clark May 2023

Good Governance, Bad Governance: A Refinement And Application Of Key Governance Concepts, Scott L. Mitchell, Mark D. Packard, Brent B. Clark

Marketing & Entrepreneurship Faculty Publications

Understanding what makes governance 'good' or 'bad' has been impeded by construct ambiguity. Contemporary governance research has struggled to define 'governance' and related constructs such as 'ownership', 'agency', and 'management' in a way that clearly separates and distinguishes them. Often, the line between governance and management is so blurred that it is impossible to say what is good or bad 'governance' versus 'management'. Here we provide a systematic classification of key governance concepts in terms of their distinct economic functions. 'Governance', for instance, is the economic function of behavioural constraint. This allows us to state what 'good' governance is and …

Considerations For Scaling A Social Enterprise: Key Factors And Elements, Clodagh O'Reilly, Lucia Walsh, Ziene Mottiar

Articles

The number of social enterprises has grown exponentially in recent times. International research regarding how social enterprises scale is starting to emerge and is becoming an area of increased focus. Due to their hybridity, social enterprises experience unique scaling challenges, and research has started to examine these experiences. This theoretical paper reviews existing literature on social enterprise scaling and, based on this, proposes a conceptual model for understanding the interdependent factors and elements social enterprises must navigate when scaling. The proposed conceptual model will provide a base for further empirical research. When validated, it will also provide a practical tool …

Raise The Bar: A Study Of Motivation And Locus Of Control In Relation To Exercise Adherence, Zachary Bertolino Apr 2023

Raise The Bar: A Study Of Motivation And Locus Of Control In Relation To Exercise Adherence, Zachary Bertolino

Honors Projects in Business

This paper will examine factors attributed to exercise adherence, and what relationships exist between motivation (intrinsic and extrinsic), locus of control (internal and external) and adherence. The purpose of this study is to determine what combination of motivation and locus of control is the best predictor of exercise adherence. The hypothesis states that an individual who is intrinsically motivated and has an internal locus of control will be most likely to maintain exercise behavior over an extended period. Existing literature has shown that both intrinsic sources of motivation and an internal locus of control are related to adherence in other …

Things To Consider Before Co-Signing A Loan, J. David Aiken Apr 2023

Things To Consider Before Co-Signing A Loan, J. David Aiken

Cornhusker Economics

In the context of family farms, includes some general points to consider before you sign a loan guarantee for a family member who is heavily in debt.

Conclusion: Having to consider whether to co-sign a child's loan is a very difficult situation-no one wants to be part of losing part of the family farm or ranch to loan foreclosure. But if the loan guarantee isn't part of a financial turnaround plan that has at least a fighting chance of success, don't sign the guarantee unless you absolutely don't need the money for your own retirement.

Fail Fast, Learn Fast: Understanding The Process Of Learning From Failure In Smes, Nikolina Koporcic, David Sjödin, Marko Kohtamäki, Vinit Parida

Association of Marketing Theory and Practice Proceedings 2023

‘Fail fast and learn fast’ is a common principle advanced to quickly grow and scale startups and SMEs. However, the literature is lacking detailed insights into how such learning processes are organized. The paper aims to investigate how knowledge-intensive SMEs learn from failures through organizational learning processes. Case studies of three high-tech SMEs that operate in a highly dynamic context are presented. The findings are summarized in the learning from failure process, which includes three phases, each with underlying sub-activities and principles: 1) failure recognition, 2) interactive sensemaking, and 3) organizational adaptation. We summarize our insights into a framework disentangling …

Such collaboration will contribute to tackling youth unemployment, the region’s most pressing contemporary problem, as well as diversifying local economies. The research delves into the complexities and history of entrepreneurship in Jordan as one of the region’s pioneering nations, examining the …
