Industry Clusters And Economic Development: A Learning Resource, Edward J. Feser
Industry Clusters And Economic Development: A Learning Resource, Edward J. Feser
Edward J Feser
One of the most widely discussed issues in community and economic development today is the role of industry clusters as engines of regional growth and development. Many communities are undertaking cluster studies or initiating cluster planning exercises as a way to organize development strategies to promote key local economic strengths or to shore up identified weaknesses. A large consulting industry has emerged to serve governments’ interest in clusters and the research literature on the topic is growing rapidly. At the same time, some analysts have likened clusters to another economic development fad that will eventually be supplanted by the next …

Frontline Demonstration On Sesame In West Bengal, Ganesh Chandra, R L. Sagar
Ganesh Chandra
Sesame is one of the important oilseeds crop in India, which plays a major role in supplementing the income of small and marginal farmers of Sunderbans. One of the major constraints of traditional Sesame farming is low productivity of local varieties. To replace this anomaly, Krishi Vigyan Kendra of CIFRI has conducted frontline demonstration at adopted farmers’ field in four development blocks viz. Kakdwip, Namkhana, Patharpratima and Kulpi of Sunderbans, West Bengal. Cultivation of high yielding varieties of Sesame viz. Rama (Improved Selection-5) and Tilottma (B-67) shows percentage increase of 46.58 and 35.86 respectively over local check. The technology gap …
What Do The Ibbottson Historical Studies Really Prove About Firm Size, Risk And Return?, Michael Sack Elmaleh
What Do The Ibbottson Historical Studies Really Prove About Firm Size, Risk And Return?, Michael Sack Elmaleh
Michael Sack Elmaleh
I deny that the Ibbottson historical studies prove that small and medium caps outperform large caps because they are more risky. First, I question whether covariance measures are necessarily a good proxy for risk. The higher levels of volatility associated with small and medium cap versus large cap may be a statistical artifact: the greater number of transactions associated with large caps as compared to small caps may account for this difference. Secondly, higher returns on small and medium caps may be a function of less efficient information distribution for these securities as compared to large caps. Finally, can we …

Impact study on introduction of Moong (Vigna radiata) cultivation in rice fallow cropping system of Sundarbans has been done to know the socio -economic impact of Summer Moong cultivation over the populace of Sundarbans after 10 years of start of FLD on Moong in this area. The study covered randomly selected 60 farmer beneficiaries under FLD of three blocks using Before-After analysis through PRA, formal household survey and focused group discussion. The triangulation of data has been done through using all three methods. The result of this study shows that the number of farmers having net income above Rs. 1000-2000 …

Towards A Theory Of Indigenous Development, Ana Maria Peredo, Robert B. Anderson, Craig S. Galbraith, Benson Honig, Leo-Paul Dana

Indigenous populations throughout the world suffer from chronic poverty, lower education levels, and poor health. The ‘second wave’ of indigenous development, after direct economic assistance from outside, lies in indigenous efforts to rebuild their ‘nations’ and improve their lot through entrepreneurial enterprise. This paper suggests that there is a distinguishable kind of activity appropriately called ‘indigenous entrepreneurship’. We begin by defining the indigenous population and noting some general facts about their numbers and distribution. In an effort to discern the potential for development on indigenous peoples’ own terms, we then explore three frameworks for understanding efforts at development, including indigenous …

Aboriginal Economic Development And Entreprenership, Robert B. Anderson, Robert G. Giberson

This chapter explores economic development and entrepreneurship among Aboriginal' people in Canada as a particular instance of Indigenous entrepreneurship and development activity worldwide. In tum, Indigenous entrepreneurship, and the economic development that flows from it, can be considered a particular sub-set of ethnic entrepreneurship. What makes Indigenous entrepreneurship a particular and distinct instance of ethic entrepreneurship is the strong tie between the process and place - the historic lands of the particular Indigenous group involved. With Aboriginal populations there is also often a strong component of "nation-building," or more correctly re building. This is in contrast with instances of entrepreneurship …
