The traditional relationship – that Aboriginal peoples in Canada have had with their land and its resources – has changed significantly since the arrival of Europeans. During the 17th and 18th centuries, trade relations with the newcomers introduced to Aboriginal peoples: 1) capitalism; 2) the capitalist view toward land; 3) the exploitation of resources. The newly formed Canadian government in the late 19th century with its Indian policy expedited the shift to a capitalist economy with the creation of Indian reserves. During the mid-20th century First Nations began to view economic interests as a part of their own development agenda. …

This qualitative exploratory study seeks to present a deeper understanding of entrepreneurs of Indian ethnicity operating firms in the formal sector in Christchurch, New Zealand. Our over-arching guiding question was: Why do first generation ethnic minority immigrants become entrepreneurs? Sub questions included the exploration of the why and what of entrepreneurship for these first generation immigrants, in particular why these immigrants choose to be exporters. In-depth interviews were conducted with a dataset of 58 entrepreneurs of Indian origin of whom 11 were involved in exporting from New Zealand. Recent studies on transnational entrepreneurship suggest that migrant entrepreneur plays an increasingly significant role as sources of economic activities and especially export revenue. The literature is, however, biased on the US experience, lacks a comparative perspective between migrants and non-migrants and is primarily anecdotal in nature. This paper aims to reduce this gap by mapping the recent changes in the role of migrant entrepreneurs as a source of increased economic activity and export revenue in the Danish context and thereby linking the challenges stemming from the transnational entrepreneurship literature to the immigration and internationalisation of entrepreneurship literature. In this paper, we explore mining in Arctic Canada from the perspective of the people on the communities there, in particular the Inuit, the pre-colonial people of the area. To do so, we first provide a brief overview of the history of mining in Canada including recent incursions into Nunavut. Then, we examine the place of aboriginal people including the Inuit in the modern global economy. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of type of governance on financial policy and financial performance of micro-family-owned businesses in Canada. This study utilised survey research (a non-experimental field study design). Micro-family-business owners from Western Canada were asked about their beliefs, perceptions and feelings regarding type of governance, financial policy and financial performance. The findings of this study indicate that type of governance positively impacts financial policy. The results also show that both type of governance and financial policy positively impact the financial performance of the micro-family-owned businesses in Canada.
