An Empirical Study Of Indian Entrepreneurs In Christchurch, New Zealand, Edwina Pio, Leo Paul Dana

Leo- Paul Dana

This qualitative exploratory study seeks to present a deeper understanding of entrepreneurs of Indian ethnicity operating firms in the formal sector in Christchurch, New Zealand. Our over-arching guiding question was: Why do first generation ethnic minority immigrants become entrepreneurs? Sub questions included the exploration of the why and what of entrepreneurship for these first generation immigrants, in particular why these immigrants choose to be exporters. In-depth interviews were conducted with a dataset of 58 entrepreneurs of Indian origin of whom 11 were involved in exporting from New Zealand. With increasing geographical mobility of the Asian population, our study contributes to …

Migrant Entrepreneurship, Economic Activity And Export Performance: Mapping The Danish Trends, Nikita Baklanov, Shahamak Rezaei, Jan Vang, Leo Paul Dana

Leo- Paul Dana

Recent studies on transnational entrepreneurship suggest that migrant entrepreneur plays an increasingly significant role as sources of economic activities and especially export revenue. The literature is, however, biased on the US experience, lacks a comparative perspective between migrants and non-migrants and is primarily anecdotal in nature. This paper aims to reduce this gap by mapping the recent changes in the role of migrant entrepreneurs as a source of increased economic activity and export revenue in the Danish context and thereby linking the challenges stemming from the transnational entrepreneurship literature to the immigration and internationalisation of entrepreneurship literature. Entrepreneurial economic activity …

The Creation Of Trust - The Interplay Of Rationality, Institutions And Exchange, Martin Mathews, Peter Stokes Dec 2013

The Creation Of Trust - The Interplay Of Rationality, Institutions And Exchange, Martin Mathews, Peter Stokes

Martin Mathews

Relationships based on notions of trust represent a central aspect of the communitarian model of industrial districts. Examination of trust has generated a substantial literature; nevertheless, there have been relatively few studies that have empirically considered the sources of trust that operate in local ties and connections. The paper aims to redress this imbalance by investigating relationships in the Arve Valley industrial district near Geneva. It considers sources of trust by engaging the theoretical framework of Möllering’s (2006a) model of trust which is predicated on the concepts of reason, routine and reflexivity. In conjunction with this, the field research employs …

Voice Without Say: Why Capital-Managed Firms Aren’T (Genuinely) Participatory, Justin Schwartz Aug 2013

Voice Without Say: Why Capital-Managed Firms Aren’T (Genuinely) Participatory, Justin Schwartz

Justin Schwartz

Why are most capitalist enterprises of any size organized as authoritarian bureaucracies rather than incorporating genuine employee participation that would give the workers real authority? Even firms with employee participation programs leave virtually all decision-making power in the hands of management. The standard answer is that hierarchy is more economically efficient than any sort of genuine participation, so that participatory firms would be less productive and lose out to more traditional competitors. This answer is indefensible. After surveying the history, legal status, and varieties of employee participation, I examine and reject as question-begging the argument that the rarity of genuine …

A Born Global Gradually Advancing Its Internationalization - A Case Study Of Internationalization Process Of A Small Tour Operator In A Niche Market, Karolina Nessel

Journal of Entrepreneurship, Management and Innovation JEMI

Today much is already known about the internationalization patterns of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). However, the research has mainly focused on outward internationalization and more in manufacturing industry than in services (and hardly in the tourism industry). Thus, the paper undertakes an exploratory research in order to verify to what extent the common framework of analysis may explain an internationalization path of SMEs in the tourism sector. To this goal, a case study of a small tour operator in a niche market of weddings abroad in Poland is undertaken. The research seeks to match the firm’s internationalization characteristics with …

Mortgage Securitization 426 Working Paper: Is It An Insurance Product?, Symphony Music

Symphony Music

This discussion highlights informed interaction between two knowledgeable parties about whether the residential mortgage asset backed securitization process involves the creation of an insurance product. Although an initial conclusion reached by an Insurance Examiner that it is not “insurance,” that same Examiner opened the door that it could be viewed as “insurance.” If it is determined that insurance is involved, the obligation to collect taxes falls onto the Connecticut State Department of Revenue Services, the requirement to collect balance sheets falls onto the Insurance Department, and the decision to prosecute originators for perpetuating a fraud on bank loan consumers falls …

This is the story of Chase1, the venerable old line bank, and how it used its dominant market influence in the decade leading up to 2012 to originate and acquire mortgage loans, how it forced individual homeowners to pay high rates, and how it ultimately began to steal the home equity away from hard-working homeowners and their families. It is also the story about how the largest US banks combined their anti-competitive behavior and took from residents in all States. As illustrated by the chain of events described below for a situation in Connecticut, Chase's attitude and actions never reflect …

There is no "default" in a securitized mortgage loan. The loan is paid off ab initio and the existence of the note is fabricated from paid off balances for the convenience of the originators who didn't think through the foreclosure process.

(This material was prepared by a mortgage securitization geek but simplified to make it straightforward for smart people to understand. This material should be exciting for those who want to discover why the financial banking system no longer works. Mortgage securitization is about nuance. To understand what drives the actions of banks, and sometimes why regulators are missing the picture, many finer nuances of mortgage securitization must be understood. This Memorandum is an attempt to identify common structural realities and the implication for business associated with those realities)

An Phuoc (A): Can Its Business Be Rescued From The Asian Financial Crisis?, Mai T T Thai, Huong T. Thai

Mai T T Thai

Nguyen Thi Dien, the founder and owner of An Phuoc, was staring at several letters from An Phuoc’s major customers on a summer day in 1997. Although the weather was suffocatingly hot and humid, she had a chill running down her spine. One after another, the letters informed her that An Phuoc’s major orders had been cancelled and that its partners were closing their business because of the Asian financial crisis. It was clear that An Phuoc would have to close down its factories and make massive layoffs unless it could find a new market. What would it be?

An Phuoc (B): Can Its Business Model Survive The Global Financial Crisis?, Mai T T Thai, Huong T. Thai

Mai T T Thai

Nguyen Thi Dien, the founder and owner of An Phuoc, was deep in thought as she watched the news about the global financial crisis on a winter day in early 2008. Every TV channel, every newspaper and everyone she met had been talking about a series of financial market collapses since mid-2007. The crisis had become real now and it was going to have a great impact on global consumption. EU and U.S. markets seemed to be freezing up. The Asian financial crisis had almost killed An Phuoc about 10 years earlier, but her drastic change in business strategies and …

When We Trust Too Much, Martin Mathews Jan 2011

When We Trust Too Much, Martin Mathews

Martin Mathews

This paper examines questions concerning the creation of trust in mature industrial district in south-east France; notably the quality of intra-district exchanges when compared with extra-district exchanges. The consequences of trusting habits learnt and reinforced in a highly socialised environment are highlighted. Finally, a suspension mechanism, that of identity and role, that SME managers employ in order to reduce uncertainty will be discussed. Results demonstrate that managers have solid foundations on which they may base their local trust decisions. However, they frequently transfer their trusting attitudes to external partners in the absence of such solid foundations. The consequences of this …

Gift Giving And The Creation Of Trust, Martin Mathews Jan 2010

Gift Giving And The Creation Of Trust, Martin Mathews

Martin Mathews

We examine the role that gift giving plays in industrial districts and in particular the role of gift giving in the creation of inter-organisational trust. Inter-organisational exchanges in a mature industrial district are analyzed using Mauss’ theoretical framework of gift-giving, receiving and counter-giving. Actors in embedded network relationships frequently exchange gifts and favours. This gift giving is a fundamental part of the relationship. Gift giving is found to be instrumental in creating and maintaining relationships, defining group and individual identity and resolving conflicts. The originality of our findings lies in the fact that despite the ideology of the purely altruistic …

The Influence Of Vietnam’S Administrative Reform On Entrepreneurial Orientation In Micro-Enterprises, Mai T T Thai Jan 2010

The Influence Of Vietnam’S Administrative Reform On Entrepreneurial Orientation In Micro-Enterprises, Mai T T Thai

Mai T T Thai

Basing on the results of a face-to-face survey and secondary data from General Statistics Office of Vietnam, we found that the administration reform of Vietnam has had a positive impact on entrepreneurial orientation (EO) on all of its three dimensions, namely managerial perception, firm behavior, and resource allocation in Vietnamese micro-enterprises. The firms have shown to take higher risks and be more proactive but they have not put an emphasis on innovation yet. In this paper, we present the reform’s milestones and the evolution of EO in Vietnamese microenterprises along these three dimensions.

Niagara Falls, New York was home to the 13th Annual Vincentian International Conference Promoting Business Ethics sponsored by DePaul University (Chicago, IL), Niagara University (Niagara, NY), and St. John’s University (New York, NY), the three American universities sponsored by the Congregation of the Mission (the Vincentians). Conferences in the past had specific themes and corresponding paper presentations focused on a particular topic. This one intentionally did not have a central organizing subject matter to allow for greater diversity. Leaders from the academic and corporate sectors, representing 30 countries, submitted excellent papers on a broad range of ethical issues. This rich …
