Cross-Cultural Differences And Intercultural Cooperation In The Context Of Change And Uncertainty: Americans And Finns In The Workplace, Maija Llisa Herweg

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

American and Finnish workers in financial institutions in the United States and in Finland were interviewed in their respective languages to explore cross-cultural differences in response to change and uncertainty in the work place. Changes were explored in the domains of organizational, process, procedure and work content, and technological changes in the work place. As a point of departure for this study, Hofstede's IBM study, as it pertains to Uncertainty Avoidance--a measure he used to evaluate culture-based resistance to change--was used for this study.

Differences in the kinds of change considered difficult to adjust to were found in the cross-cultural …

On The Use Of The Complexity Index As A Measure Of Complexity In Activity Networks, Bert De Reyck, Willy Herroelen Jun 1996

On The Use Of The Complexity Index As A Measure Of Complexity In Activity Networks, Bert De Reyck, Willy Herroelen

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

A large number of optimal and suboptimal procedures have been developed for solving combinatorial problems modeled as activity networks. The need to differentiate between easy and hard problem instances and the interest in isolating the fundamental factors that determine the computing effort required by these procedures, inspired a number of researchers to develop various complexity measures. In this paper we investigate the relation between the hardness of a problem instance and the topological structure of its underlying network, as measured by the complexity index. We demonstrate through a series of experiments that the complexity index, defined as the minimum number …

Anion Induced Blue To Purple Transition In Bacteriorhodopsin, Mrunalini Pattarkine, Anil K. Singh

Faculty Works

Purple membrane (PM, λ" role="presentation">λmax" role="presentation">max 570 nm) of H. halobium on treatment with sulphuric acid changes its colour to blue (λ" role="presentation">λmax" role="presentation">max 608 nm). The purple chromophore can be regenerated from the blue chromophore by exogeneous addition of anions such as CI−" role="presentation">− and HPO42−" role="presentation">2−4. Chloride ion is found to be more effective than the dibasic phosphate ion in regenerating the purple chromophore. Nevertheless, one thing common to the anion regeneration is that both CI−" role="presentation">− and HPO42−" role="presentation">2−4 show marked pH effect. At pH 1.0 the efficiency of …

The Relationships Among Leadership Behaviors Of Leaders In Training Organizations, Training Methods, And Organization Profitability, Joseph D. Keith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Business organizations are decreasing funding for training. The problem investigated in this study was to determine if there was a relationship among the leadership behavior of training leaders, the use of newer methods of training, and organizational profitability. A sample of 57 organizations from the Fortune 500 was surveyed to determine leadership behavior and the use of newer methods of training. The Leadership Practices Inventory was used to measure leadership and the Affective Communication Test was used to measure charisma. Profitability data were obtained from the literature. Return on assets, return on equity, the Moody's Corporate Bond Rating, and the …

Developing Methods To Measure And Project Levels Of Combat Readiness In A Naval Aviation Squadron At The Unit Level, Michael Lawrence White Apr 1996

Developing Methods To Measure And Project Levels Of Combat Readiness In A Naval Aviation Squadron At The Unit Level, Michael Lawrence White

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Among the various missions and levels in a military organization, the term "Combat Readiness" is defined in many ways. To a unit-level command, such as an aircraft squadron, it simply refers to the unit's capability to perform its assigned mission when called upon. The proof of that capability is evident in the aftermath of combat, however, it is too late at that point to address any shortcomings that may exist. The problem is, how can the unit effectively define, continuously measure, and confidently forecast its ability to perform in combat? A quantitative model based upon historical data that encompasses all …

The Soul Of The Firm (Nairobi, Kenya), C. William Pollard Mar 1996

The Soul Of The Firm (Nairobi, Kenya), C. William Pollard

C. William Pollard Papers

In this speech at the Daystar Symposium (Nairobi, Kenya), Pollard notes that whereas the "theory of the firm" is often defined by the objective goal of maximizing profit, the "soul of the firm" should be considered the people the organization employs. Corporate success, therefore, requires that profit be considered alongside the development of character.

The Soul Of The Firm As It Moves To The 21st Century, C. William Pollard

C. William Pollard Papers

In an address delivered at the 50th Annual Indiana University Business Conference (Indianapolis, IN), Pollard contends that the "soul" of any corporate firm is its people. In light of this, he goes on to argue that corporate success depends upon managers who commit themselves to a vision of leadership defined by service to both employees and customers.

Cognitive Elements In The Implementation Of New Technology: Can Less Information Provide More Benefits?, Terri L. Griffith, Gregory B. Northcraft

Management & Entrepreneurship

This paper explores the major mechanisms within the Griffith and Northcraft (1993) cognitive model. This model offers a fine-grained view of how user and implementer understandings influence implementation success. While broader implementation models suggest structural and process strategies for increasing the likelihood of implementation success, this model describes user and implementer understanding and can be used to design appropriate implementation strategies.

Integrating Key Functions In Product Development : A Conceptual Product Development Model For The Korean Context, Jong-Wook Kim Jan 1996

Integrating Key Functions In Product Development : A Conceptual Product Development Model For The Korean Context, Jong-Wook Kim

Theses

The high-tech market is characterized by market uncertainty, technology uncertainty and rapid change. To survive in this risky high-tech market, a company must create competitively effective product development practices that meet its own unique needs and circumstances.

One effective practice is cross-functional integration in the product development process. The advantages of integration include a shortened time to market, successful transformation of research results to production, productivity improvement, innovation project success, and high-quality problem solutions. However, these advantages are rarely obtained in the current product development practices of Korean companies. Their product development efforts are generally characterized by time consuming sequential …

The Effects Of Environment Dynamism And Heterogeneity On Salespeople's Role Perceptions, Performance And Job Satisfaction, Ravipreet S. Sohi

Department of Marketing: Faculty Publications

This article develops a structural equations model which examines the effects of environmental dynamism and heterogeneity on salespeople’s role conflict, role ambiguity, performance and job satisfaction. The model is tested with EQS, using data collected from 230 salespeople in multiple companies and industries. Indicates that environmental dynamism reduces satisfaction and performance, and increases role conflict and ambiguity. Notes that environmental heterogeneity also reduces performance and increases role conflict, but does not have a significant effect on role ambiguity.

Performance Issues In U.S.–China Joint Ventures, Gregory E. Osland, S. Tamer Cavugsil Jan 1996

Performance Issues In U.S.–China Joint Ventures, Gregory E. Osland, S. Tamer Cavugsil

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

Based on an in-depth study of U.S.-China joint ventures, this article offers some insights into the performance of such international business relationships. While the conventional literature treats government as an amorphous aspea of the political-legal environment, in this case government is an active participant and influence in the performance of international joint ventures (UVs). It has both a constraining and enabling effect on LJV structure, strategy, and performance. For example, limits can be placed on ownership shares of joint ventures and on prices of the output. At the same time, government can cooperate with LJVs and foreign parent companies by …

Conceptual Integration Using Wrapped Applications, Christian Gassner, Hubert Oesterle, Ryosuke Hotaka Jan 1996

Conceptual Integration Using Wrapped Applications, Christian Gassner, Hubert Oesterle, Ryosuke Hotaka

Hubert Oesterle

This paper describes how object-oriented concepts can be used throughout system development for integration purposes. Based on the distinction of physical and conceptual integration the concept of object wrapping is discussed for the integration of non-object-oriented systems. By regarding applications as high-level objects, i.e. wrapped applications, integration is achieved by modelling so-called integration relationships between these wrapped applications. While in conceptual integration redundancy and message passing relationships are specified, in physical integration message passing relationships only are implemented. The paper finally outlines theactivities of the conceptual integration process.
