Ethnic Minority Entrepreneurs In The International Carpet Trade: An Empirical Study, Ivan H. Light, Shahamak Rezaei, Leo Paul Dana

Leo- Paul Dana

Persian carpets have long been an important commodity in the world market, largely controlled by the Tehran Carpet Bazaar and the Hamburg Free Harbour. Interviews were conducted amongst Persian carpet traders in European centres, providing a historical overview and allowing us to identify trends. The paper discusses the pre-modern bazaar and the authors observe changes in the sector as Persian carpets can now be sourced from new entrants competing with traditional manufacturers. Market Orientation And Entrepreneurship In Chinese Family Business: A Socialisation View, Henry X. Shi, Leo Paul Dana

Leo- Paul Dana

This article examines the relationship between market orientation and entrepreneurship in small to medium-sized second-generation Chinese family businesses. Market orientation is captured through a multi-dimensional framework, which defines a spectrum between a market orientation pole and a family orientation pole. The Schumpeterian tradition is adopted in entrepreneurship investigation, which emphasises the innovation outcomes. Findings are discussed by using a socialisation view. Analysis indicates that the owner-manager’s socialisation patterns have a significant impact on the firm’s entrepreneurial processes, which nuances the relationship between market orientation

Evolution De La Coopétition Dans Un Cluster: Le Cas De Waipara Dans Le Secteur Du Vin, Leo Paul Dana, Julien Granata Jan 2013

Evolution De La Coopétition Dans Un Cluster: Le Cas De Waipara Dans Le Secteur Du Vin, Leo Paul Dana, Julien Granata

Leo- Paul Dana

The Waipara case study contributes to understanding developments in wine production clusters over time, in particular the coopetition relationship between cluster members. This longitudinal analysis is based on two primary data collection stages using semi-structured interviews. Formalizing cluster actions and strengthening collaboration among its members seem to contribute to developing a collaborative spirit. This strengthened collaboration hinders competition whereas the latter would seem to be indispensable for the coopetitive strategy’s success.

Finding Practical Knowledge In Entrepreneurship, Edward Mcmullan, Thomas Kenworthy

Management and Marketing Faculty Publications

Research in the pre-paradigmatic, applied scientific field of entrepreneurship is characterized mainly as exploratory. This article advocates for a considerable shift toward a more effective applied research agenda. An applied research program is proposed based on modifications to a Lakatosian research program. The agenda extends beyond typical calls for more replication work to include a focus on practical outcomes, practical significance, and surprising findings among other things. The intent is to produce substantially more practical knowledge—knowledge that is useful to entrepreneurs, policy makers, educators, and scholars.

High Tech Entrepreneurial Careers: A Model Of Stages, Phases, And Ages, Amy E. Hurley-Hanson, Cristina M. Giannantonio, Richard Sudek

The meteoric rise, dramatic fall, and spectacular comeback associated with Steve Jobs’ career path is an evocative example of the risks and rewards associated with following a high-tech entrepreneurial career. While research on entrepreneurs has primarily focused on their characteristics, there is limited research on the career paths of entrepreneurs in either the careers or the entrepreneurship literature. The purpose of this paper is to propose a new model of entrepreneurial careers that better reflects the realities of pursuing a career in the high-tech computer industry. The proposed model considers the role that stages, phases, and ages play in the …

This research takes a modest first step toward demystifying social entrepreneurship, better understanding the phenomenon, and exploring the relevance of wealth-building in social entrepreneurial activity. The Implications Of Worker Behavior For Staffing Decisions: Empirical Evidence And Best Practices, Tom Tan, Serguei Netessine

IT & Operations Management Research

Employees in service organizations such as restaurants are humans, and their productivity is often heterogeneous due to innate abilities, motivation, and environmental factors. However, none of these considerations are taken into account by typical workforce planning models and software packages. In this paper we describe the results of a study on how workers respond to workload, an integral work environment factor, and we provide operational insights to improve efficiency and strengthen restaurant financials. We study a comprehensive data set from a family-style restaurant chain to clarify how workload, which is defined as the number of tables or diners that a …

Portfolio Company Selection Criteria: Accelerators Vs Venture Capitalists, Cody Chang

CMC Senior Theses

The explosive growth of ‘accelerators’ in the United States has given entrepreneurs and their startups the opportunity to pursue seed-stage financing. A difference of means was performed on the responses per question between the collected 19 accelerators’ response and the 100 venture capitalists’ response, recorded from a prior study. It is found that venture capitalists place significantly more weight, than accelerators, on the potential of the startup’s product or service to be proprietary, to enter a …
