Management Regimes And Its Impact On The Wetland Fisheries Management In Assam, Ganesh Chandra

Ganesh Chandra

Assam is endowed with copious aquatic wealth in the form of beels, swamps, ponds and rivers. The floodplain wetlands (beels) extending over one lakh hectare, constitute the most important fishery resource of the state. The beels are considered as one of the most productive ecosystems owing to their characteristic interactions between land and water system. These wetlands are the common property resource and under different management regimes. These wetlands are under various management regimes, i.e., private management (individuals and groups), fishermen cooperative management, Community-based fisheries management (decentralized management, Government works as facilitator) and open access. Most of the unregistered beels …

Does “Get Big Fast” Apply To The Nitrogenous Fertilizer Sector?, Bryane Michael Jan 2014

Does “Get Big Fast” Apply To The Nitrogenous Fertilizer Sector?, Bryane Michael

Bryane Michael (bryane.michael@stcatz.ox.ac.uk)

The nitrogenous fertilizer segment hardly represents the most glamorous sector – even if it represents one of the most important. Simply put, we could not eat (or live) without nitrogen feeding our crops. Yet, economists have paid little attention to modelling this boring yet vital market segment. In this paper, we provide a model of the nitrogenous fertilizer sector (SIC codes 2870-3). We develop a simple dynamic model of segment profitability as a function of revenue in a differential equations framework. We show that any strategy to “get big fast” (in revenue terms) depends on structural factors affecting firm profitability. …

The State Of Global Sustainable Food Production, Green Supply Chain Management And Decision Making: A Multidisciplinary Review, Renato Alas Msc

Renato A Martins MSc

Abstract This review aims to promote a discussion about the development of a new global supply chain structure, as emergent economies such as the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) are coming to the scene. In this review we try to understand the dynamic processes of global food distribution and its logistics taking into account the impact of emergent economies. As XXI century society faces an increasing global population that imposes a greater challenge for self-sustainable food production, quality and distribution. How then we cope with such great supply demands? In support to UN-FAO goal of reducing the …

Exploring Alternatives For Sustainable Development In The Tamiahua Wetlands, Luis Felipe Luna-Reyes, Jorge A. Durán-Encalada, Erick R. Bandala Jan 2013

Exploring Alternatives For Sustainable Development In The Tamiahua Wetlands, Luis Felipe Luna-Reyes, Jorge A. Durán-Encalada, Erick R. Bandala

Journal of Entrepreneurship, Management and Innovation JEMI

This article presents a preliminary System Dynamics model developed to analyze the sustainability of a natural reserve in Mexico: the Tamiahua Wetlands. Wetlands are often referred to as nature’s kidneys because they filter contaminants from water. In spite of their importance, wetlands are endangered areas around the world. In order to build the model we take into account the Fishbanks model developed by Meadows (2004) as a starting point. Then, the model considers variables related to changes in total and economically active populations, and contaminants in water. The preliminary model presented in this study implies that fishing activity in the …

Evolution De La Coopétition Dans Un Cluster: Le Cas De Waipara Dans Le Secteur Du Vin, Leo Paul Dana, Julien Granata Jan 2013

Evolution De La Coopétition Dans Un Cluster: Le Cas De Waipara Dans Le Secteur Du Vin, Leo Paul Dana, Julien Granata

Leo- Paul Dana

The Waipara case study contributes to understanding developments in wine production clusters over time, in particular the coopetition relationship between cluster members. This longitudinal analysis is based on two primary data collection stages using semi-structured interviews. Formalizing cluster actions and strengthening collaboration among its members seem to contribute to developing a collaborative spirit. This strengthened collaboration hinders competition whereas the latter would seem to be indispensable for the coopetitive strategy’s success.

The Evolution Of Co-Opetition In The Waipara Wine Cluster Of New Zealand, Leo Paul Dana, Julien Granata, Frank Lasch, Alan Carnaby Jan 2013

The Evolution Of Co-Opetition In The Waipara Wine Cluster Of New Zealand, Leo Paul Dana, Julien Granata, Frank Lasch, Alan Carnaby

Leo- Paul Dana

The co-opetion literature has long focused on the explanatory variables for competitors engaging in cooperative relationships. Yet,there is a gap in understanding the evolution of coopetition. In this article, we re-visit an embryonic cluster in New Zealand and investigate changes over time. The paper examines a regional wine cluster against a background of industry restructuring, competition and internationalization. The study thus contributes to our understanding of the evolution of a regional wine cluster and its implications for wine business. The originality of the paper is twofold: first, the paper uses the co-opetition approach to provide a better understanding of cooperation and …

The Environment As A Multi-Dimensional System:, Murray Hunter Jan 2012

The Environment As A Multi-Dimensional System:, Murray Hunter

Murray Hunter

Traditional approaches to management have been mechanistic, grounded in the belief that one is in control within an environment that can be manipulated through a firm forming objectives, strategies, and actions through organizations. In addition strategic planning has viewed the environment in a very structured way, for example a situational audit and SWOT analysis2 and it wasn’t until Porter developed the competitive forces model that the environment became the centre of strategy. These kinetic metaphors portray an organization as one embedded with a belief that it has an internal locus of control with the ability to manipulate forces within the …

The Evolution Of Business Strategy, Murray Hunter Jan 2012

The Evolution Of Business Strategy, Murray Hunter

Murray Hunter

Before the 1960s, strategy was referred to as “generalship”, “the art of war” and being concerned about managing army campaigns1. Strategy was first used in the conduct of business in the early 1960s by Chandler2, who developed strategic concepts along the thoughts of the industrial economics school3, business policy, and into a prescriptive model with objectives set by the management group which utilized defined strategies to attempt achieving their goals in what was termed corporate strategy.

Imagination May Be More Important Than Knowledge: The Eight Types Of Imagination We Use, Murray Hunter Jan 2012

Imagination May Be More Important Than Knowledge: The Eight Types Of Imagination We Use, Murray Hunter

Murray Hunter

Imagination is the ability to form mental images, phonological passages, analogies, or narratives of something that is not perceived through our senses. Imagination is a manifestation of our memory and enables us to scrutinize our past and construct hypothetical future scenarios that do not yet, but could exist. Imagination also gives us the ability to see things from other points of view and empathize with others.

Towards An Islamic Business Model: A Tawhid Approach, Murray Hunter Jan 2012

Towards An Islamic Business Model: A Tawhid Approach, Murray Hunter

Murray Hunter

World events and media portrayal of Islam over the last few decades has projected negative images, which are based on a total misunderstanding of Islam and the principals it encompasses. Predominantly, Islam through many eyes is seen as a homogenous view of the world, where many elements of the media have stereotyped it as an extreme religion. This situation has not been assisted by the lack of published academic and intellectual thought, which could assist in developing more balanced views about what the principals of Islam stand for. The focus of most published works on Islamic economics and business has …

On Some Of The Misconceptions About Entrepreneurship, Murray Hunter Jan 2012

On Some Of The Misconceptions About Entrepreneurship, Murray Hunter

Murray Hunter

Entrepreneurship has been played up by the media as a visionary and heroic activity. Individual entrepreneurs have been glorified through media coverage, biographies, and publicity contributing to many government and public misconceptions entrepreneurship. This paper examines some of the myths about entrepreneurship, looking at relevant research and statistics, and paints a very different picture to general public perceptions. The paper then goes on to postulate that entrepreneurship is only part of the firm lifecycle, very little innovation is generated by start-up ventures, there is no common entrepreneurial type of person, people start new businesses for non-rational reasons, very few entrepreneurs …

After a review of the nature of the environment, introducing the concepts of relatedness and influence of time and space on innovation, thinking, cognition, intelligence, and creativity, the metaphoric concept of creative intelligence is postulated. The elements of creative intelligence are described along with other supporting elements like prior knowledge, imagination, energy, and awareness. The role of creative intelligence in developing entrepreneurial opportunities and solving ethical problems is then discussed.

Mid-Life Crisis, Transition And The Propensity To Embark Upon Entrepreneurship, Murray Hunter Oct 2011

Mid-Life Crisis, Transition And The Propensity To Embark Upon Entrepreneurship, Murray Hunter

Murray Hunter

This paper looks at mid-life crisis and transformation. According to erikson, people go through life and often find regret, remorse, and depression about their achievement and existence in life. The potential for transformation occurs when people evaluate their self concept and find dissappointment with what they see. People cope with this dissappointment by living out their fantasies and typologies defined and described by O'Conner as the Farmer, the Nurseryman, the helper, the Writer, and the Drop-out. Finally this paper hypothesizes that mid-life crisis is not confined to one period of life and this transformation can occur during any period of …

The Continuum Of Psychotic Organizational Typologies, Murray Hunter Oct 2011

The Continuum Of Psychotic Organizational Typologies, Murray Hunter

Murray Hunter

The paper discusses the influence on our perceptions from the basic psychotic disposition of organizations. Cognitive distortion is influenced by the psychotic traits of an organization along a continuum of various states which include paranoia, obsessive-compulsive, dramatic, depressive, schizoid, and narcissistic tendencies. These tendencies may be of assistance in the early start-up phases of a firm but overtime distort perceptions and behaviour of the organization through the defense mechanisms they develop. The psychotic continuum is a worthy paradigm through which to view organizational opportunity, strategy, operations, and decision making, potentially capable of assisting in diagnosing the causes of organization disfunction.

Perpetual Self Conflict: Self Awareness As A Key To Our Ethical Drive, Personal Mastery, And Perception Of Entrepreneurial Opportunities, Murray Hunter Jan 2011

Perpetual Self Conflict: Self Awareness As A Key To Our Ethical Drive, Personal Mastery, And Perception Of Entrepreneurial Opportunities, Murray Hunter

Murray Hunter

This paper considers the nexus between the environment, self and reality, and the influence upon ethics, entrepreneurial opportunity, and sustainability. It is postulated that perception and interpretation by individuals creates meaning and that this is regulated by self identity and corresponding levels of awareness. A model of awareness and identity is presented where it is further argued that our ethics, perceptions of opportunity, and views of sustainability are a product upon what level of awareness we are anchored. Finally, this paper postulates that new paradigms of ethics are required to create a sustainable society and that individuals must achieve humility …
