Creating, Metavoicing, And Propagating: A Road Map For Understanding User Roles In Computational Advertising, Yuping Liu-Thompkins, Ewa Maslowska, Yuquing Ren, Hyejin Kim

Marketing Faculty Publications

Over the past two decades, everyday users have become a prominent force in the advertising landscape. They actively participate in conversations with and about brands by creating, amplifying, and interacting with brand-related messages. These user activities generate large volumes of structured and unstructured data that advertisers can mine to understand consumer interests and preferences. In this article, we survey insights from the user-generated content literature through the computational advertising lens to offer a road map for future research. Specifically, we discuss three roles that users play—as creators, metavoicers, and propagators. For each role, we present key research areas that can …

Higher Education, Robert Ping Jan 2019

Higher Education, Robert Ping

Marketing Faculty Publications

Research on Higher Education, including promotion and tenure, and the possibility of reusing one's data for a second paper to help reduce the "time between papers." (Perhaps surprisingly, some editors do not object to reusing data, as long as new theory is being tested.) This Higher Education web page has been substantially revised and updated in its "The Jr. Faculty Corner" section. For example, the suggestions there for Revising and Resubmitting a paper and sample "Responses to the Reviewers" have been heavily edited for clarity and, utility.

Theoretical Model Testing With Latent Variables, Robert Ping Jan 2019

Theoretical Model Testing With Latent Variables, Robert Ping

Marketing Faculty Publications

Topics include improving Average Variance Extracted (AVE), estimating a latent variable with only two indicators, and speeding up the "weeding" (itemizing) of a measure so it is consistent ("fits the data"), is valid and reliable, yet has more than 3 indicators.

Latent Variable Interactions And Quadratics, Robert Ping Jan 2019

Latent Variable Interactions And Quadratics, Robert Ping

Marketing Faculty Publications

Research on interactions (XZ) and quadratics (XX) in theoretical model (hypothesis) tests using structural equation analysis (LISREL, EQS, AMOS, SIMPLIS, etc.) and real-world data. Topics include XZ and XX reliability and validity. In theory tests these are important because low reliability/validity in XZ or XX may mean that a significant interaction or quadratic will be NS or of opposite sign in its next model test. Other topics include estimating categorical (nominal) variables, and improving measures that are in serious trouble--ones with low Average Variance Extracted (AVE), or unacceptable model-to-data fit (i.e., only a 3-indicator specification fits the data, etc.)

(Buyer-Seller) Relationship Termination, Robert Ping Jan 2019

(Buyer-Seller) Relationship Termination, Robert Ping

Research on responses to (business, e.g., buyer-seller) relationship problems: Relationship Exiting, Voice, Loyalty, Relationship Neglect, Opportunism, and their antecedents.

What Do We Know About Digital Attribution?, John B. Ford Dec 2018

What Do We Know About Digital Attribution?, John B. Ford

Marketing Faculty Publications

(First paragraph) Digital attribution sounds rather simple in that it involves isolating advertising tactics and assessing their impact on consumer decision making. But in a complex digital environment, advertisers must navigate through a variety of consumer platforms and touch points to find the optimal vehicles and mechanisms to cost effectively have an impact on consumer choice. And, on each research occasion, the process has to be all but reinvented.

What Do We Know About Sports Sponsorships?, John B. Ford Sep 2018

What Do We Know About Sports Sponsorships?, John B. Ford

Marketing Faculty Publications

(First paragraph) There is little doubt that a tie-in between a brand and a special event can be quite lucrative. Although past research often has shown that advertising typicality (how well an advertisement is seen to be representative of a particular product category) creates positive advertising effects, there are no known studies that have examined the level of typicality with respect to sporting events in particular.

What Do We Know About Mobile Media And Marketing?, John B. Ford

Marketing Faculty Publications

Everywhere we look, it is immediately obvious how much the mobile phone is an integral part of daily life. Yet, the medium is still relatively new to advertising research, particularly among academics who have devoted recent years of study to this topic addressed in this issue’s special package, “What We Know about Mobile Media and Marketing.”

The Advertisement Value Of Transformational & Informational Appeal On Company Facebook Pages, Fabienne T. Cadet, Priscilla G. Aaltonen, Vahwere Kavota Jan 2017

The Advertisement Value Of Transformational & Informational Appeal On Company Facebook Pages, Fabienne T. Cadet, Priscilla G. Aaltonen, Vahwere Kavota

Marketing Faculty Publications

The advertisement value of Facebook is an under-developed area of social media research. Transformational and informational advertising appeal has yet to be studied as it relates to social media. This paper utilizes established classification and measurement scales from marketing literature to classify companies and their Facebook posts and measures the advertisement value of these posts. The study uses a sample of 100 companies from the 2015 Fortune 500 list. Results indicate that posts with transformational appeal are more engaging to the consumer than informational appeal; however, posts with informational appeal have greater advertisement value for the company. The results also …

How Corporate Cultures Drive Advertising And Promotion Budgets Best Practices Combine Heuristics And Algorithmic Tools, Douglas West, John B. Ford, Paul W. Farris Jan 2014

How Corporate Cultures Drive Advertising And Promotion Budgets Best Practices Combine Heuristics And Algorithmic Tools, Douglas West, John B. Ford, Paul W. Farris

Marketing Faculty Publications

This study provides a survey of the methods used by U.S. advertisers to set advertising and promotions budgets and the effects of culture, risk, and organizational experience on these choices. Findings suggest that heuristics provide checks on analytically based budget methods and may also help managers deal with risks. Understanding the role played by heuristics in budgeting provides the first step toward process improvements in advertising and promotions budgeting.

How Strong Is The Pull Of The Past? Measuring Personal Nostalgia Evoked By Advertising, Altaf Merchant, Kathryn Latour, John B. Ford Jan 2013

How Strong Is The Pull Of The Past? Measuring Personal Nostalgia Evoked By Advertising, Altaf Merchant, Kathryn Latour, John B. Ford

Marketing Faculty Publications

Marketers frequently evoke personal nostalgia in their advertising. To date, scales have been developed to measure the propensity to get nostalgic but not the actual dimensions of personal nostalgia. Results from four studies show that advertising-evoked personal nostalgia comprises four correlated but distinct dimensions: past imagery, positive emotions, negative emotions, and physiological reactions. This multidimensional scale showed a high level of validity and reliability. Moreover, due to careful choice of sampling frames, the study demonstrates a high level of external generalizability. Evaluating nostalgia-based advertising using the study's multidimensional scale may provide marketers with strategic insights for developing and fine-tuning advertising …

Brand Creation Vs. Acquisition In Portfolio Expansion Strategy, Randle D. Raggio, Yana Damoiseau, William C. Black Jan 2011

Brand Creation Vs. Acquisition In Portfolio Expansion Strategy, Randle D. Raggio, Yana Damoiseau, William C. Black

Marketing Faculty Publications

Purpose – This paper seeks to address the following question: What causes firms to choose brand creation vs brand acquisition for brand portfolio expansion?

Design/methodology/approach – A multilevel interdisciplinary conceptual model is developed with nine factors at three levels of influence: the market, firm, and brand portfolio. Using 125 brand acquisitions and creations for 22 firms between 2001 and 2007, the model is tested using logistic regression to determine which factors significantly influence brand portfolio expansion strategy and whether they encourage acquisition or creation.

Findings – Significant factors were found at the market and firm levels, with competitive intensity of …

Chasing Brand Value: Fully Leveraging Brand Equity To Maximize Brand Value, Randle D. Raggio, Robert P. Leone Jan 2009

Chasing Brand Value: Fully Leveraging Brand Equity To Maximize Brand Value, Randle D. Raggio, Robert P. Leone

Marketing Faculty Publications

Both researchers and practitioners seek to understand how to leverage brand equity to create value. Adopting ‘the theoretical separation of brand equity and brand value’ framework originally proposed in the Journal of Brand Management by Raggio and Leone, this conceptual paper looks more closely at the brand value construct and the implications of the proposed theoretical separation. The authors argue that firms are continually attempting to ‘chase’ the appropriable value of their brands—defined as the theoretical maximum value that a brand could achieve if all brand equity were fully leveraged. Implications for developing measures of brand value are discussed.

Drivers Of Brand Value, Estimation Of Brand Value In Practice, And Use Of Brand Valuation: Introduction To The Special Issue, Randle D. Raggio, Robert P. Leone Jan 2009

Drivers Of Brand Value, Estimation Of Brand Value In Practice, And Use Of Brand Valuation: Introduction To The Special Issue, Randle D. Raggio, Robert P. Leone

Marketing Faculty Publications

Brands constitute the largest asset for many firms, and brand valuations are increasingly being seen as an important performance metric both for companies and managers.1 In addition, components of brand valuation models have been found to positively impact financial market performance, so it is critical that managers understand clearly what brand value is, and how they can create and appropriate (capture) as much of that value as possible.2 Due to resource constraints, firms are forced at any given time to emphasize either value creation or value appropriation based on strategic priorities. Research shows that the stock market rewards …

Gratitude Works: Its Impact And The Mediating Role Of Affective Commitment In Driving Positive Outcomes, Randle D. Raggio, Judith Anne Garretson Folse

Marketing Faculty Publications

After studying the effects of Louisiana’s post-hurricane “thank you” campaigns, the researchers find expressions of gratitude significantly improve perceptions of Louisiana in the midst of its recovery. Through a national survey conducted November 2006, they find that those who saw or heard a thank you advertisement have more positive attitudes toward the state and its people, a greater willingness to pay a premium for its products, services and travel to the state, and spread positive word-of-mouth, thus justifying the use of public funds to support the campaign. The authors investigate the role of participation on the effectiveness of expressions of …

The Theoretical Separation Of Brand Equity And Brand Value: Managerial Implications For Strategic Planning, Randle D. Raggio, Robert P. Leone Jan 2007

The Theoretical Separation Of Brand Equity And Brand Value: Managerial Implications For Strategic Planning, Randle D. Raggio, Robert P. Leone

Marketing Faculty Publications

During the past 15 years, brand equity has been a priority topic for both practitioners and academics. In this paper, the authors propose a new framework for conceptualizing brand equity that distinguishes between brand equity, conceived of as an intrapersonal construct that moderates the impact of marketing activities, and brand value, which is the sale or replacement value of a brand. Such a distinction is important because, from a managerial perspective, the ultimate goal of brand management and brand equity research should be to understand how to leverage equity to create value.

Choosing A Landing Site For Wright Air & Space Center, Charles S. Gulas, Robert Premus, John P. Blair Jan 2006

Choosing A Landing Site For Wright Air & Space Center, Charles S. Gulas, Robert Premus, John P. Blair

Marketing Faculty Publications

The case provides a study of the interesting challenges involved in making a site selection decision. It can be used as a “how to” guide for businesses, non-profit organizations and communities seeking sites for recreational, educational, cultural or other sorts of facilities. The decision would require analysis of quantitative issues such as regional demographics as well as qualitative issues such as the “mommy factor.” This term, coined by a member of the board, refers to a set of factors that would make a location desirable to parents. Perhaps most important, lessons from the site selection process are applicable to other …
