Regional Determinants Of Efficiency Growth Of Small And Medium-Sized Enterprises. Evidence From Poland, Teresa Łuczka, Paweł Przepióra
Regional Determinants Of Efficiency Growth Of Small And Medium-Sized Enterprises. Evidence From Poland, Teresa Łuczka, Paweł Przepióra
Journal of Entrepreneurship, Management and Innovation JEMI
SMEs sector plays a vital role in modern economies. Therefore, the interest in its functioning among economists is in fact quite natural. This article is a part of a current research on regional factors contributing to the development of enterprises in this category. The first section examines earlier studies in this field conducted globally and in Poland. According to them, many elements enable the SME’s development. It is not surprisingly that the specified set of pro-growth factors does not exists. Next section describes the results of the author’s own studies in the fields. These studies relate to regional factors contributing …

Intellectual Capital Statement (Ics) As A Method Of Measurement And Management Of Knowledge Assets, Anna Ujwary-Gil
Anna Ujwary-Gil
The article describes empirical verification of an interesting model – Intellectual Capital Statement (ICS). ICS is an example of a method which emphasizes the European contribution into the developing trend of intellectual capital (IC) measure and evaluation, with particular attention paid to the SME sector (a strong presence of Scandinavian countries and the USA is noticeable here). ICS is presented here as a tool enabling us to manage and evaluate IC of a company and to demonstrate the dynamics of its changes. The article contains a case study of a company operating in the construction sector in Poland. It also …
Territorial Tax System Reform And Corporate Financial Policies, Matteo Arena, George Kutner
Territorial Tax System Reform And Corporate Financial Policies, Matteo Arena, George Kutner
Matteo P. Arena
We examine the effect of a permanent change to a country corporate income repatriation tax system on corporate financial policies. In 2009 Japan and the U.K. switched from a worldwide to a territorial system for the taxation of repatriated foreign earnings. The new system effectively reduced the tax liabilities of most multinational firms when repatriating earnings. We find that after the change firms accumulate less cash, pay out larger amounts through dividends and share repurchases, and invest less abroad. We do not find that the tax system change has significantly affected domestic investments even when controlling for capital constraints.
Long Live Design Science Research! .... And Remind Me Again About Whether It Is A New Research Paradigm Or A Rationale Of Last Resort For Worthwhile Research That Doesn't Fit Under Any Other Umbrella, Steven Alter
Steven Alter
There is broadening and increasingly unquestioned acceptance of design science research (DSR). Recently, DSR may have provided an important bridge for overcoming or bypassing artificial barriers to accepting the legitimacy of certain types of research, but in some cases it is not obvious how DSR actually contributed to the research. Perhaps it is time to retire the assumption that DSR is somehow a new and different paradigm for doing research and to move on. Recognizing that the information-systems discipline is quintessentially rooted in design, this panel examines whether we actually need DSR to legitimize research that produces interesting and valuable …

Service Quality, Relationship Building And Innovative Technologies In The Scottish Tourism Industry, Betsy A. Pudliner
Service Quality, Relationship Building And Innovative Technologies In The Scottish Tourism Industry, Betsy A. Pudliner
Betsy A. Pudliner
In today's post-modern society, service takes greater meaning with the application of innovative technologies. In particular, historical and cultural service attitudes are renewed and easily expressed with the use of lnternet and World Wide Web applications. The Scottish tourism industry is viewed as a highly developed and fragmented economy. The foundations of tourism are in the small, family owned operations. Small businesses extend traditional alignment with destination marketing organizations with smaller, local virtual communities to capture and retain revenues. Consistency, in the delivery of quality experiences, is seen as a positive outcome with virtual community building. This paper describes research …

Purpose – There is a lack of research covering the training requirements of organisations implementing highly demanding information systems (HDISs). The aim of this paper is to help in the understanding of appropriate training requirements for such systems.
Design/methodology/approach – This research investigates the training delivery within a customer-facing organisation that successfully implemented an HDIS. A case study was undertaken to identify resource allocation during the implementation lifecycle and training guidelines were prepared following in-depth interviews with client and supplier consultant practitioners.
Findings – Organisations implementing HDISs should invest in training throughout the implementation lifecycle. Two areas of training were …

Using The Work System Method With Freshman Information System Students, Steven Alter

To date, the use of the work system method in information systems curricula has demonstrated that postgraduate students can benefit from this approach when examining a business situation involving an information system. To contrast the experiences of post-graduate students with work experiences, in this paper we report on use of a simplified version of the Work System Method in a freshman Information Systems course and study how students without work or technical knowl-edge performed when analyzing IT-reliant work systems in business settings. We reflect on an introductory information systems course that included a work system analysis assignment, and we examine …

Business And Non-Profit Organizations Facing Increased Competition And Growing Customers' Demands (Vol. 11), Anna Ujwary-Gil
Anna Ujwary-Gil
The monograph focuses attention on the description and analysis of new phenomena and processes for commercial and non-commercial organizations. Valid conditions are pointed out for the functioning of both commercial and non-commercial organizations and an attempt is made to explain their impact on these organizations. The analysis also examines the strategies used by organizations in the face of fierce competition and increasing consumer demands in their effort to gain and maintain a competitive edge. This case study below is segmented into four areas of interest: • commercial and non-commercial organizations as an object of research, • commercial and non-commercial organizations …

User Experience In Service Design: Defining A Common Ground From Different Fields, Karim Touloum, Djilali Idoughi, Ahmed Seffah
Professor Djilali IDOUGHI
The emerging field of service design combines several methods mainly from the fields of product, software and interaction design, for designing the experience and interface to services. However, User eXperience design is not easy to understand because it is a new approach and covers many different fields (usability, psychology, marketing…). More often the design team members come from various domains with different cultural backgrounds such as engineers and marketing. Therefore, it is necessary to have a common definition to share the same understanding of this concept. In this paper, we investigate the main definitions proposed in the literature and the …

Today’s society is growing, moving, pushing and pulling in so many different directions. Society has moved from the invention of electricity in the 1800’s to the invention of the iPhone, which has changed the way we use, and perceive technology today. The survival of an architectural student depends on being able to communicate multiple drawings, graphics, images, diagrams and more in the most productive method. Each phase in design requires a clear and concise conversation between the designer and the observer. Schematic Designs generate some of the most creative ideas during a projects progression. With this understood, this section of …

Smartphones are becoming a vehicle to provide an efficient and convenient way toaccess, find and share information; however, the availability of this information hascaused an increase in cyber attacks. Currently, cyber threats range from Trojans andviruses to botnets and toolkits. Presently, 96% of smartphones do not have pre-installedsecurity software. This lack in security is an opportunity for malicious cyber attackers to hackinto the various devices that are popular (i.e. Android, iPhone and Blackberry). Traditionalsecurity software found in personal computers (PCs), such as firewalls, antivirus, andencryption, is not currently available in smartphones. Moreover, smartphones are even morevulnerable than personal computers because …

Developing The Next Generation Of Women And Minority Scientists For The Nuclear Energy Industry, Darrell Burrell, Andrea Todd, Aikyna Finch, Maurice Dawson

The largest source of carbon dioxide emissions globally is the combustion of fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) in power plants, automobiles, industrial facilities and other sources. Generating electricity is the single largest source of carbon dioxide emissions, representing 41% of all emissions. Since 2007 the United States has been more actively considering nuclear power as an option for developing energy. Three decades after the Three Mile Island accident seemed to doom the nuclear power industry, the idea of a nuclear renaissance has been gaining public acceptance as a way to generate energy without greenhouse gas emissions and meet …
Use Of Open Source Software And Virtualization In Academia To Enhance Higher Education Everywhere, Maurice E. Dawson Jr., Imad Al Saeed
Use Of Open Source Software And Virtualization In Academia To Enhance Higher Education Everywhere, Maurice E. Dawson Jr., Imad Al Saeed
Maurice Dawson
As costs around the world continue to rise for education, institutions must become innovative in the ways they teach and grow students. To do this effectively, professors and administrative staff should push toward the utilization of Open Source Software (OSS) and virtual tools to enhance or supplement currently available tools. In developing countries, OSS applications would allow students the ability to learn critical technological skills for success at small fraction of the cost. OSS also provides faculty members the ability to dissect source code and prepare students for low-level software development. It is critical that all institutions look at alternatives …
Modeling Dependence Using Skew T Copulas: Bayesian Inference And Applications, Michael S. Smith, Quan Gan, Robert Kohn
Modeling Dependence Using Skew T Copulas: Bayesian Inference And Applications, Michael S. Smith, Quan Gan, Robert Kohn
Michael Stanley Smith
[THIS IS AN AUGUST 2010 REVISION THAT REPLACES ALL PREVIOUS VERSIONS.]
We construct a copula from the skew t distribution of Sahu, Dey & Branco (2003). This copula can capture asymmetric and extreme dependence between variables, and is one of the few copulas that can do so and still be used in high dimensions effectively. However, it is difficult to estimate the copula model by maximum likelihood when the multivariate dimension is high, or when some or all of the marginal distributions are discrete-valued, or when the parameters in the marginal distributions and copula are estimated jointly. We therefore propose …

Over the last two decades the scientific community has witnessed unprecedented growth of nanotechnology research in Canada. Although recent studies have shown that Canada consistently maintains a position in the first tier of productive countries in terms of its share of the world’s nano-publications, a number of key questions remain unanswered. Using a unique nano-related publication dataset, this paper combines bibliometric analysis and science overlay mapping to visualize the ‘invisible college’ of Canadian nano research. The present analysis finds that the rapid growth of nanotechnology research in Canada is, for the most part, externally driven. In recent years, research content …
