This chapter reviews the recent decisions of the Supreme Court as they bear on attempts to combat childhood obesity through regulating marketing and concludes that attempts to regulate marketing will face substantial First Amendment obstacles in the courts.

Enterprise Architecture Ontology For Supply Chain Maintenance And Restoration Of The Sikorsky's Uh-60 Helicopter, James A. Rodger Dec 2011

Enterprise Architecture Ontology For Supply Chain Maintenance And Restoration Of The Sikorsky's Uh-60 Helicopter, James A. Rodger

James Rodger

Ontologies have emerged as an important tool in the Enterprise architecture discipline to provide the theoretical foundations for designing and representing the enterprise as a whole or a specific area or domain, in a scientific fashion. This paper examines the domain of maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) of the Sikorsky UH-60 helicopter involving multiple enterprises, and represents it through an ontology using the OWL Language and Protégé tool. The resulting ontology gives a formal and unambiguous model/representation of the MRO domain that can be used by multiple par- ties to arrive at a common shared conceptualization of the MRO domain. …

P2p Business Applications: Future And Directions, James A. Rodger Dec 2011

P2p Business Applications: Future And Directions, James A. Rodger

James Rodger

Since the launch of Napster in June 1999, peer-to-peer technology (P2P) has become synonymous with file sharing applications that are the bane of the recording industry due to copyright infringements and consequent revenue losses. P2P promised a revolution in business computing which has not arrived. It has become synonymous with illegal file sharing and copyright violations. Meanwhile the information systems industry has undergone a paradigm change, and we are supposedly living in a world of cloud computing and mobile devices. It is pertinent to examine if P2P, as a revolutionary technology, is still relevant and important today and will be …

Trouble At The Top: Women Who Don’T Want To Work For A Female Boss, Robert F. Buchanan Dec 2011

Trouble At The Top: Women Who Don’T Want To Work For A Female Boss, Robert F. Buchanan

Robert Buchanan

An exploratory field study inquired whether women like to be supervised by a female manager. The more
jobs held by female respondents, the less they preferred having a woman for a boss. Additionally, there
was negative bias related to the age of the female manager. There were no similar effects between male
subordinates and managers of either gender. In fact, the more jobs males had in their careers, the more
they believed that females make the best boss. Implications are discussed toward whether the glass
ceiling for females is being perpetuated to some degree by other females in subordinate positions.

Using Business Intelligence For Operational Decision-Making In Call Centers, Eric Kyper, Michael Douglas, Roger Blake Dec 2011

Using Business Intelligence For Operational Decision-Making In Call Centers, Eric Kyper, Michael Douglas, Roger Blake

Roger H. Blake

This paper proposes an operational business intelligence system to help achieve operational excellence in insurance call centers. We apply a decision tree based solution to collected data using a sliding window approach. Our solution provides two distinct advantages to call center managers. First, the decision trees allow managers to recognize key factors and the role they play in determining service levels. Second, our sliding window approach allows managers to see the effects on service levels of resource reallocation. Collected data from a large U.S. insurance company is analyzed. Initial results provide good insight into factors affecting this firm’s call center …

With Feeling: How Emotions Shape Negotiation, Mara Olekalns, Daniel Druckman Dec 2011

With Feeling: How Emotions Shape Negotiation, Mara Olekalns, Daniel Druckman

Mara Olekalns

An increasingly popular topic in current research is how emotional expressions influence the course of negotiation and related interactions. Negotiation is a form of social exchange that pits the opposing motives of cooperating and competing against one another. Most negotiators seek to reach an agreement with the other party; they also strive for an agreement that serves their own goals. This dual concern is reflected in a process that consists of both bargaining and problem solving. A good deal of the research and practice literature concentrates on ways to perform these activities effectively. In earlier writing, emotions were viewed largely …

Firm Location And Corporate Debt, Matteo P. Arena, Michaël Dewally Dec 2011

Firm Location And Corporate Debt, Matteo P. Arena, Michaël Dewally

Matteo P. Arena

This study examines the influence of a firm’s geographical location on corporate debt and provides evidence that the higher cost of collecting information on firms distant from urban areas has significant implications on a wide array of corporate debt characteristics. We find that rural firms face higher debt yield spreads and attract smaller and less prestigious bank syndicates than urban firms. Rural firms attempt to reduce their informational disadvantage by relying more on relationship banking. Our results on the effect of location on corporate debt are robust to the inclusion of an extensive set of firm and issue characteristics.

Service Blueprinting And Bpmn: A Comparison., Lester Johnson, Simon Milton Dec 2011

Service Blueprinting And Bpmn: A Comparison., Lester Johnson, Simon Milton

Lester Johnson

Purpose: To compare and contrast a customer-focused service process diagram tool (blueprinting) with an organizational-focused process diagram tool (business process modelling notation, or BPMN).

Design/methodology/approach: Using a hotel stay as an example, we present both a service blueprint and a BPMN diagram and explicitly discuss the similarities, differences and where the two tools can be complementary.

Findings: We have found that one similarity is that service blueprinting segments processes into parts that are similar to BPMN‘s idea of swimlanes. However, the swimlanes in service blueprinting separate customer actions, customer-facing employees‘ actions and functions, and back-stage functions, actors, and information systems …

Effects Of Correlation On Intermittent Demand Forecasting And Stock Control, Nezih Altay, Lewis A. Litteral, Frank Rudisill Dec 2011

Effects Of Correlation On Intermittent Demand Forecasting And Stock Control, Nezih Altay, Lewis A. Litteral, Frank Rudisill

Nezih Altay

This study investigates the effects of three different types of correlation on forecasting and stock control of intermittent demand items. Applying appropriate forecasting and stock control methods to theoretically generated compound Poisson demand data we show that correlation in intermittent demand does play a role in forecast quality and stock control performance. Negative autocorrelation levels lead to higher service levels than positive values, while cost does not significantly change. Our results also show that high intermittency levels intensify these changes in service level. We also show that cross-correlation produces results in the opposite direction of autocorrelation in size or intervals; …

Otc Market, Tiffany C. Walsh Dec 2011

Otc Market, Tiffany C. Walsh

Tiffany Walsh J.D., B.Comm.

Every private company should consider the advantages and disadvantages of going public when promoting the growth of their operations and earnings. Because of the benefits a public company can offer, a company should consider taking their company to this next stage of growth and the various avenues to do so. The most known and prestigious stock exchanges, such as NASDAQ and NYSE, are catered to larger and more established companies, however, there are trading boards available for smaller companies as well which encompass many of the large stock exchange characteristics. The over the counter (OTC) market provides an alternative for …

Psychosocial Antecedents Of Communication, Trust, And Relationship Effectiveness In New Product Development Projects: A Functional Manager Perspective, Elias Kyriazis, Paul Couchman, Lester W. Johnson Dec 2011

Psychosocial Antecedents Of Communication, Trust, And Relationship Effectiveness In New Product Development Projects: A Functional Manager Perspective, Elias Kyriazis, Paul Couchman, Lester W. Johnson

Lester Johnson

The basic differences between marketing managers and their technically trained counterpart managers (e.g., research and development (R&D), engineering, and manufacturing managers) in terms of work experience, training, and differing decision-making styles have often been suggested as a source of conflict, which acts as a barrier to effective working relationships and integration during new product development (NPD) work. In this paper, we empirically explore this issue by developing and testing a model of psychosocial differences (thought worlds and psychological distance) between the two groups of managers and their effect on communication, trust, and relationship effectiveness during NPD projects. We find that …

Out Of Africa: Somali Immigrants Bring Entrepreneurial Spirit To The Great Plains, Riza Dogan Dec 2011

Out Of Africa: Somali Immigrants Bring Entrepreneurial Spirit To The Great Plains, Riza Dogan

Riza Dogan

ABSTRACT The Great Plains have long been a magnet for immigrants, with a huge influx of settlers, mostly of European descent, moving into the area following the 1862 Homestead Act. A century later, some towns in Central Nebraska such as Lexington and Grand Island were transformed by thousands of Hispanic immigrants moving to the region to take advantage of job opportunities. In the past decade, a new wave of Somali immigrants has moved into the region, also in search of greater opportunity, bringing with them a spirit of entrepreneurship. This increased diversity has created challenges and opportunities. Providing expanded support, …

A Numerical Investigation Of The Accuracy Of Parametric Bootstrap For Discrete Data, Chris Lloyd Dec 2011

A Numerical Investigation Of The Accuracy Of Parametric Bootstrap For Discrete Data, Chris Lloyd

Chris J. Lloyd

Standard first order tests have size error that decreases as m^{-1/2} where m is a measure of sample size. Parametric bootstrap tests use an exact calculation of the P-value, assuming nuisance parameters equal their null maximum likelihood estimates. It is commonly believed that their performance is driven by asymptotics, notwithstanding some confusion in the literature on asymptotic error rates.

For simple discrete models, parametric bootstrap tests can be calculated explicitly rather than simulated. Moreover, their accuracy can also be calculated exactly as a function of the nuisance parameter. This article reports the results of an intensive numerical investigation of the …

Perspective Taking: Building Positive Interpersonal Connections And Trustworthiness One Interaction At A Time (Download Perspective Taking Survey Items), Michele Williams

Michele Williams

There is growing interest in the role of perspective taking in organizations. Perspective taking has been linked to enhanced interpersonal understanding and the strengthening of social bonds. In this chapter, I integrate research from sociology, communications, and psychology to provide insight into why, when, and how perspective taking facilitates the relational resources of positive connections and trustworthy actions. I introduce the importance of a three-dimensional view of perspective taking for building relational resources and present data validating this conceptualization: I conclude with directions for future research.

Integrity For The Common Good: The Missing Link Between Neo-Liberalists And The ‘Occupy’ Discontents, Marco Tavanti Dec 2011

Integrity For The Common Good: The Missing Link Between Neo-Liberalists And The ‘Occupy’ Discontents, Marco Tavanti

Marco Tavanti

This study analyzes the differences between the neoliberalist and the Keynesian perspectives used in the debates emerged from the current economic crisis. The common good ethics is presented as a paradigm for recuperating the social, human and moral responsibilities of economic development. The assumption is that neoliberal economic models have produced prosperity but also technocracy, inequality and discontent. Through the examination of the principles of solidarity, subsidiarity, sustainability and synchronicity used in Catholic Social Teaching, the author introduces an integrated model for ethical decision-making beyond ideological divisions and for the common good.

Genuinely Service-Oriented Enterprises: Using Work System Theory To See Beyond The Promise Of Efficient Software, Steven Alter Dec 2011

Genuinely Service-Oriented Enterprises: Using Work System Theory To See Beyond The Promise Of Efficient Software, Steven Alter

Steven Alter

The concept of service-oriented enterprise has great potential. Taken literally, however, it raises many issues, including practical difficulties of creating a service-oriented enterprise in the computer science sense and the huge leap from flexible IT infrastructure to an enterprise that is genuinely oriented toward providing services for customers and employees. This paper is a conceptual contribution showing how work system theory can help in seeing analysis and design issues beyond technical architectures that have dominated research to date. After summarizing background concepts related to service, service systems, and the vision of service-oriented enterprises, this paper explains how work system theory …

Post-Entry Container Port Capacity Expansion, Meifeng Luo, Liming Liu, Fei Gao Dec 2011

Post-Entry Container Port Capacity Expansion, Meifeng Luo, Liming Liu, Fei Gao

Fei Gao

Port capacity development is a critical strategy for the growth of a new port, as well as for the development of existing ones, when both new and existing ports serve the same hinterland but have different competitive conditions. To study this strategy, we develop a two-stage duopoly model that comprises the pricing and capacity decisions of two heterogeneous players serving an increasing market. We identify the necessary condition for a port to increase its profit through capacity expansion, and characterize the condition when preemptive pricing by the dominant player is neither credible nor effective in preventing the smaller player from …

Declining Innovation Performance Of The Hungarian Economy: Special Focus On Organizational Innovation The Example Of The European Community Innovation Survey (Cis)*, Makó Csaba, Illéssy Miklós, Csizmadia Péter Dec 2011

Declining Innovation Performance Of The Hungarian Economy: Special Focus On Organizational Innovation The Example Of The European Community Innovation Survey (Cis)*, Makó Csaba, Illéssy Miklós, Csizmadia Péter

Journal of Entrepreneurship, Management and Innovation JEMI

In this paper the authors intend to examine the innovation performance of the Hungarian firms before and following the period of the global financial crisis and economic downturn. Contrary to the mainstream approach non-technological innovation, more precisely workplace innovation is put into the focus of the analysis. The authors argue that this is a neglected dimension of firms’ innovation activities which may become an important source of competitiveness at company level and thus it deserves more attention. The analysis of empirical data of the various waves of the European Community Innovation Survey (CIS) on non-technological innovation shows that the innovation …

Factors Affecting Judgments Of Prevalence And Representation: Implications For Public Policy And Marketing, Donnel A. Briley, L. J. Shrum, Robert S. Wyer Jr. Dec 2011

Factors Affecting Judgments Of Prevalence And Representation: Implications For Public Policy And Marketing, Donnel A. Briley, L. J. Shrum, Robert S. Wyer Jr.

Donnel A Briley

Public policies are typically established to eliminate important social problems (e.g., minority discrimination, crime, poverty). And the importance of these problems, and urgency people feel about addressing them, is influenced by perceptions of their prevalence. These perceptions, however, can be unwittingly biased by extraneous sources of information that lead some either to overestimate or underestimate the seriousness of the problem at hand. We review empirical work on the construction of perceptions of frequency and representativeness and the processes that underlie them, and show that these perceptions are often biased in ways that differ over segments of the population. The implications …

An Examination Of The Effects Of Service Brand Dimensions On Customer Satisfaction, Athanasios Krystallis, Polymeros Chrysochou Dec 2011

An Examination Of The Effects Of Service Brand Dimensions On Customer Satisfaction, Athanasios Krystallis, Polymeros Chrysochou

Polymeros Chrysochou

The present study intends to examine how consumers evaluate service brands. Building on past literature, several causal relationships are examined between key brand dimensions and consumer satisfaction using the airline industry as an exemplary branded service category. Results reveal price, core service, feelings and self-image congruence to be the most important dimensions of a service brand which, in turn, impact significantly on consumer satisfaction. Except price, these attributes are intangible components of the service brand that can only be assessed by the customer during the use stage of decision-making. Besides these brand components, controlled communications are also found to strongly …
