The Persistent Competitive Advantage Of Traditional Food Retailers In Asia: Wet Markets' Continued Dominance In Hong Kong, Arieh Goldman, Robert E. Krider, Seshan Ramaswami Dec 1999

The Persistent Competitive Advantage Of Traditional Food Retailers In Asia: Wet Markets' Continued Dominance In Hong Kong, Arieh Goldman, Robert E. Krider, Seshan Ramaswami

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The focus of this article is the persistent continued strength of wet markets in Hong Kong and the weakness of supermarkets in the fresh food area. This phenomenon is surprising because, based on the experiences in North America and Western Europe and given the well-developed economy of Hong Kong, one would have expected supermarkets to dominate fresh food retailing and wet markets to be in retreat. In this article, the authors explain the reasons for the continued dominance of wet markets. They argue that consumers’shopping and consumption culture, the effectiveness of wet markets in handling consumers’needs, and the appropriateness of …

Organizing Culture: Leader Roles, Behaviors, And Reinforcement Mechanisms, Gerard George, Randall G. Sleeth, Mark A. Siders Dec 1999

Organizing Culture: Leader Roles, Behaviors, And Reinforcement Mechanisms, Gerard George, Randall G. Sleeth, Mark A. Siders

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Organizational leaders provide the primary impetus in defining, forming and shaping corporate culture. Leadership literature emphasizes on the leader's role in "articulating a vision" and the leader's pivotal role in establishing culture by setting objectives and then removing hurdles by smoothing the path for attaining those objectives. The model of corporate culture transmission focuses on behaviors that corporate leaders employ to create, communicate and manage corporate culture. However, the model does not emphasize interpretation and identification with leader behaviors in ways that would cause members to embrace the leader's values and beliefs. Improved focus over two decades does not yet …

The Multi– Mode Resource– Constrained Project Scheduling Problem With Generalized Precedence Relations, Bert De Reyck, Willy Herroelen Dec 1999

The Multi– Mode Resource– Constrained Project Scheduling Problem With Generalized Precedence Relations, Bert De Reyck, Willy Herroelen

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In this paper, we tackle the challenging problem of scheduling activities to minimize the project duration, in which the activities (a) are subject to generalized precedence relations, (b) require units of multiple renewable, non-renewable and doubly constrained resources for which a limited availability is imposed, and (c) can be performed in one of several different ways, reflected in multiple activity scenarios or modes. These multiple modes give rise to several kinds of tradeoffs (time/resource, time/cost and resource/resource trade-offs) which allow for a more effcient allocation and use of resources. We present a local search-based solution methodology which is able to …

A Different Look At Assessment Centers: Views Of Assessment Center Users, Filip Lievens, Hans Goemaere Dec 1999

A Different Look At Assessment Centers: Views Of Assessment Center Users, Filip Lievens, Hans Goemaere

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study aims to shed light on possible problems of assessment center users and designers when developing and implementing assessment centers. Semi-structured interviews with a representative sample of assessment center users in Flanders revealed that, besides a large variability in assessment center practice, practitioners experience problems with dimension selection and definition, exercise design, line/staff managers as assessors, distinguishing between observation and evaluation, and with the content of assessor training programs. Solutions for these problems are suggested.

Why Didn’T You Tell Me?: Toward Building A Model Of Why Information Is Not Shared Well In Organizations, Robert C. Kitchen Dec 1999

Why Didn’T You Tell Me?: Toward Building A Model Of Why Information Is Not Shared Well In Organizations, Robert C. Kitchen

Theses and Dissertations

The effective use of information in an organization is vital to its success. One of the biggest investments being made today by companies is in their information infrastructures. However, with all of the resources being dedicated to improving information flows, evidence shows that organizations still do not share information as widely as they could or should be. Many studies have been conducted to learn the reasons why people in organizations do not share information as well as would be good. However, no study was found that reported the relative frequency of reported reasons for not sharing information. This paper gathers …

An Analysis Of Training Adequacy And Additional Training Requirements As Perceived By Communications And Information Officers, Rex W. Little

Theses and Dissertations

This study explores requirements for additional training Communications and Information officers. This research also looks at the best time to provide training/education in the identified training deficient areas. (2) At what point during a Communications and Information officer's career would it be most appropriate to receive training in necessary …

The Influence Of Technology Strategy On Initial Public Offering Performance (Ipo), Post-Ipo Enterprise Performance, And Long-Term Survival In High-Technology Firms, Anthony Wilbon Nov 1999

The Influence Of Technology Strategy On Initial Public Offering Performance (Ipo), Post-Ipo Enterprise Performance, And Long-Term Survival In High-Technology Firms, Anthony Wilbon

Anthony Wilbon

This research investigates the influence of technology strategy on perceived initial public offering (IPO) performance, post-IPO enterprise performance, and long term survival in high technology firms. The research model integrates theories of strategic management, technology management, and population ecology to present an interrelated view of technology strategy's impact on performance and survival. A synthesis of the literature resulted in eight technology strategy dimensions that are examined: (1) technology posture; (2) intellectual property rights; (3) sourcing of technology; (4) technology portfolio; (5) scope of research and development; (6) technology executives; (7) R&D spending, and; (8) geographical focus. Hypotheses are derived from …

The Social Uses Of Advertising, Mark Ritson, Richard Elliott Nov 1999

The Social Uses Of Advertising, Mark Ritson, Richard Elliott

Mark Ritson

Advertising research has focused exclusively on the solitary subject at the expense of understanding the role that advertising plays within the social contexts of group interaction. We develop a number of explanations for this omission before describing the results of an ethnographic study of advertising's contribution to the everyday interactions of adolescent informants at a number of English high schools. The study reveals a series of new, socially related advertising-audience behaviors. Specifically, advertising meanings are shown to possess social uses relating to textual experience, interpretation, evaluation, ritual use, and metaphor. The theoretical and managerial implications of these social uses are …

Ex-Athletes As Politicians, Richard C. Crepeau Nov 1999

Ex-Athletes As Politicians, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

In recent days and weeks there has been considerable discussion in the national press of Bill Bradley's presidential run and its relationship to his professional basketball career. Such questions as: Should he exploit his NBA fame for political purposes? Should he be using this fame to raise money as he did in the big fund-raiser in Madison Square Garden last week? Why after years of disconnecting himself from his basketball career does he now seek to reconnect? Does this negate his claims that he much more than a basketball player?
