What Actually Works To Enhance Graduate Employability? The Relative Value Of Curricular, Co-Curricular, And Extra-Curricular Learning And Paid Work, Denise Jackson, Ruth Bridgstock Jun 2021

What Actually Works To Enhance Graduate Employability? The Relative Value Of Curricular, Co-Curricular, And Extra-Curricular Learning And Paid Work, Denise Jackson, Ruth Bridgstock

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The focus on short-term graduate employment metrics has catalysed the employability agenda as a strategic directive in universities. A raft of embedded, co-curricular, and extra-curricular activities has emerged for developing employability. Their relative value lacks empirical exploration. This study explored graduates’ self-reported participation in, and their perspectives on the value of, a range of embedded, extra-curricular, and co-curricular learning activities, as well as paid work, for employability. Survey data were gathered (N = 510) from Business and Creative Industries graduates from three Australian universities about the perceived value of activities for skill development, gaining relevant experience, networking, and creating employment …

A Bibliometric Analysis Of E-Government Research, Darmawan Napitupulu Jun 2021

A Bibliometric Analysis Of E-Government Research, Darmawan Napitupulu

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

E-government research has increasingly been raised since ICT was used in the public sector, but it has not yet reached the maturity stage. It contributes to the high number of research published in recent years. However, there is still limited or no bibliometric analysis conducted to analyze e-government research as a whole in the last decade. The purpose of the study is to establish bibliometric analysis as an extensive review of e-government literature. The method used in this study consists of five steps: defining search keywords, initializing search results, refining search results, compiling preliminary data statistics and analyzing data. The …

Internal And External Auditors Responsibilities And Relationships With Audit Committees In Two English Public Sector Settings, Karim Hegazy, Anne Stafford

All Works

This paper assesses the job of scrutiny and oversight in public services by examining the role of the internal auditor (IA) and external auditor (EA) and their relationship with the audit committee (AC) in two distinct English public sector environments. The research uses an exploratory qualitative case study approach based on semi-structured interviews, AC meeting observations, and documentation reviews. The study acts as a starting point to examine the effectiveness of governance arrangements during a period of change in the UK public sector. The research provides evidence of good triangulation between the work of the IA, EA, and AC. Nevertheless, …

Do They See A Half-Full Water Cooler? Relationships Among Group Optimism Composition, Group Performance, And Cohesion, William P. Jimenez, Xiaoxiao Hu, Chad Kenneally, Feng Wei Jun 2021

Do They See A Half-Full Water Cooler? Relationships Among Group Optimism Composition, Group Performance, And Cohesion, William P. Jimenez, Xiaoxiao Hu, Chad Kenneally, Feng Wei

Psychology Faculty Publications

In the present study, relationships among group composition of trait optimism (the mean, standard deviation, and minimum and maximum scores of optimism), group cohesion, and three group performance variables (task performance, contextual performance, and creative performance) were examined. Multi-source data were collected from 56 workgroups including 202 group members and 56 group leaders. We found that the mean, maximum, and minimum operationalizations of group optimism composition were positively related to the three group performance variables and that group cohesion mediated the optimism–performance relationships for the mean and minimum operationalizations of group optimism. We recommend that practitioners generally consider selecting optimistic …

Generations In The Workplace, Stephanie Weddington Jun 2021

Generations In The Workplace, Stephanie Weddington

Umbrella Summaries

What is a generation? A generation is defined as “a group of individuals, who are roughly the same age, and who experience and are influenced by the same set of significant historical events during key developmental periods in their lives, typically late childhood, adolescence, and early adulthood. Further, these differences are not attributable solely to an individual’s age but rather to the common influence of shared experiences on the cohort” (Costanza et al., 2012, p. 377). There is general agreement on the labeling of generations (i.e., Silent, Baby Boomer, Generation X, Millennial, Generation Z); however, the date ranges used to …

Towards A Theory Of Informal Supply Networks: An Exploratory Case Study Of The Za'atari Refugee Camp, Ismail Abushaikha, Zhaohui Wu, Theodore A. Khoury Jun 2021

Towards A Theory Of Informal Supply Networks: An Exploratory Case Study Of The Za'atari Refugee Camp, Ismail Abushaikha, Zhaohui Wu, Theodore A. Khoury

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

Studies of humanitarian supply chain operations contribute to efficient system designs for the delivery of goods and services to disaster- and conflict-stricken regions. However, our understanding of what happens to these relief goods and services after they are delivered is quite limited. Using a case study of the Za'atari refugee camp in Jordan, we develop a theory of informal supply networks, whereby we uncover how refugee-led, informal supply networks emerge in the camp. We find that these supply networks are an aggregate of predominantly illicit—yet legitimate—channels and social relationships that support the economic exchange of goods and services between distinct …

Vocation, Belonging, Courage: Gender Equity In Narratives Of Non-Exempt Women Administrative Assistants In Academic Units At The University Of Dayton, Julio A. Quintero, Heather Ashley Jun 2021

Vocation, Belonging, Courage: Gender Equity In Narratives Of Non-Exempt Women Administrative Assistants In Academic Units At The University Of Dayton, Julio A. Quintero, Heather Ashley

Reports from the Gender Equity Research Fellowship

Gender roles normalize thinking patterns, behaviors, actions, and attitudes. The workplace is not immune to their influence. Gender roles make certain labor invisible, either because it does not typically fit with the expectations of a determined gender group, or because it is deemed normal and therefore expected.

This report condenses the narratives of 11 non-exempt women administrative assistants at the University of Dayton in reference to how vocation, belonging, and courage are affected by gender. Based on the responses, the report proposes several approaches to equity, which is defined as the modifying of structures and practices that have intentionally or …

Faculty Start-Up Negotiations: An Examination Of Gender Differences And Recommendations For Improvement Opportunities At The University Of Dayton, Kathrin Hanek

Reports from the Gender Equity Research Fellowship

Amidst well-documented gender differences in negotiation and gender wage gaps in academia, ensuring gender equity in faculty start-up negotiations is an important part of the University of Dayton’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The current investigation examined the faculty start-up negotiation process at the University of Dayton from the perspective of department chairs and new tenure-track faculty hires with an emphasis on gender differences in the initiation and outcomes of negotiations as well as potential underlying factors that may contribute to gender disparities.

Data collected from surveys and interviews indicated gender differences primarily in the initiation of negotiations, satisfaction …

Canadian Banks And Imperialism In The English-Speaking Caribbean, Tamanisha J. John Jun 2021

Canadian Banks And Imperialism In The English-Speaking Caribbean, Tamanisha J. John

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Canadian banks have been important components of an imperialist system since at least the 19th century. However, their long and rich history of operating as purely exploitative entities in the English-speaking Caribbean region is often overlooked— leading to many incomplete and conflicting narratives about Canada’s role within the global system. I argue that Canada is an imperial actor that exerts agency in supporting a Canadian banking oligopoly both within Canada and in the English-speaking Caribbean. Insufficient attention is given to these Canadian banks, especially considering the power they have wielded in the Caribbean over the centuries. By analyzing the …

The Impact Of Family Member Ceo Demographics On Entrepreneurial Orientation And Financial Performance In Family Firms, Jaly Vibeth Chea Menéndez Jun 2021

The Impact Of Family Member Ceo Demographics On Entrepreneurial Orientation And Financial Performance In Family Firms, Jaly Vibeth Chea Menéndez

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Drawing on the upper echelons theory, this study investigates how entrepreneurial orientation is impacted by the family member CEO's demographic characteristics (age, gender, educational level, tenure, and generation) and how entrepreneurial orientation (innovativeness, proactiveness, and risk-taking) influences the family firm's financial performance. The model was empirically tested with survey data of 1314 family firms CEO respondents from 33 countries worldwide using data from the "Successful Transgenerational Entrepreneurship Practices Project" (STEP Project) applying Partial Least Squares analysis.

Moreover, it was considered the moderating effect of national culture (uncertainty avoidance and gender egalitarianism). The findings highlight no significant relation from any of …

The Impact Of Covid-19 On Utah Women And Work: Childcare And Homeschooling, Chris Hartwell, Jared Hansen, Susan R. Madsen

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

The COVID-19 pandemic of 2020–2021 has impacted workers across the globe. Women have been disproportionately impacted during this time. At one point during the pandemic, a publication from the National Women’s Law Center reported that women dropped out of the workforce at a rate four times that of men. Utah has seen similar negative impacts on working women. The Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute at the University of Utah reported that from 2019 to 2020, jobs held by women declined at a rate more than double that of men, and unemployment rose more for females than males. One major reason …

Do Guest Worker Programs Give Firms Too Much Power?, Peter Norlander Jun 2021

Do Guest Worker Programs Give Firms Too Much Power?, Peter Norlander

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Guest worker programs allow migrants to work abroad legally, and offer benefits to workers, firms, and nations. Guest workers are typically authorized to work only in specific labor markets, and are sponsored by, and must work for, a specific firm, making it difficult for guest workers to switch employers. Critics argue that the programs harm host country citizens and permanent residents (“existing workers”), and allow employers to exploit and abuse vulnerable foreign-born workers. Labor market institutions, competitive pressures, and firm strategy contribute to the effects of migration that occur through guest worker programs.
