The Effects Of Collegiate Mentoring: An Empirical Review, Rebecca Cohen Dec 2018

The Effects Of Collegiate Mentoring: An Empirical Review, Rebecca Cohen

Senior Capstone Projects

The effects of mentorship have dominated discussions of strategic leadership development in the hospitality industry. At first glance, it may seem difficult to form a lasting and beneficial mentoring relationship due to the challenges inherent in creating a natural and organic rapport between two individuals. The purpose of the following review is to showcase the comparison between existing literature in regard to the effects of the mentor-mentee relationship in the collegiate setting. Through the analysis of the existing literature, three cumulative themes became apparent: career development, psychosocial support, and role modeling. The mentor-mentee relationship, which is usually positive, can become …

Building Business Models Through Simple Rules, Sunny Li Sun, Jianqiang Xiao, Yanli Zhang, Xia Zhao Dec 2018

Building Business Models Through Simple Rules, Sunny Li Sun, Jianqiang Xiao, Yanli Zhang, Xia Zhao

Department of Management Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Purpose: How do entrepreneurs use simple rules to build their business models? Based on an inductive study of three Chinese Internet and technology firms, the authors find that business models emerge from simple rules that entrepreneurs learn from their experience. Simple rules also guide entrepreneurs to actualize and exploit opportunities in the marketplace, and they can help business models evolve through market feedback, especially in internationalization. This paper aims to delve into the black box of entrepreneurial decision-making and offer a better depiction of the business model development process in uncertain and fast-changing environments and thus provide guidance for future …

Open Source Foundations For Spatial Decision Support Systems, Jochen Albrecht Dec 2018

Open Source Foundations For Spatial Decision Support Systems, Jochen Albrecht

Publications and Research

Spatial Decision Support Systems (SDSS) were a hot topic in the 1990s, when researchers tried to imbue GIS with additional decision support features. Successful practical developments such as HAZUS or CommunityViz have since been built, based on commercial desktop software and without much heed for theory other than what underlies their process models. Others, like UrbanSim, have been completely overhauled twice but without much external scrutiny. Both the practical and the theoretical foundations of decision support systems have developed considerably over the past 20 years. This article presents an overview of these developments and then looks at what corresponding tools …

St. Cloud Area Quarterly Business Report Vol. 20, No. 4, King Banaian, Richard A. Macdonald

St. Cloud Area Quarterly Business Report

After strong regional economic performance throughout 2018, area business leaders are preparing for slower growth and rising prices by the spring of next year. While growth is expected to slow, the area economy still remains on solid foundations as 2019 approaches. The continuing uncertainty over national trade policy, rising inflationary pressures (and associated increased interest rates), ongoing health insurance cost concerns and the looming future closure of Electrolux all create headwinds, however, that will likely cause the area economy to grow less rapidly in 2019. Current economic conditions over the past three months are strong as local employment grew at …

Corporate Entrepreneurship In The Digital Era: The Cascading Effect Through Operations, Maheshkumar P. Joshi, Ravi Kathuria, Sidhartha Das

Business Faculty Articles and Research

This study examines a firm’s response to perceived changes in the environment, such as the growth of the digital era, at different levels of a firm—beginning with the adoption of corporate entrepreneurship (CE) down to process renewal (PR). We further explore if the technological intensity of a firm, high-tech or low-tech intensity, influences its choice of mode for organisational renewal (OR)—use of internal competence or outside acquisition—to exploit the opportunities created by the digital era. Using survey data from 170 firms, we test a sequential relationship among environmental changes (growth of the digital era), CE, OR and finally PR that …

Professional Skepticism: Practitioners’ Perceptions And Training Practices, Jodi L. Gissel Dec 2018

Professional Skepticism: Practitioners’ Perceptions And Training Practices, Jodi L. Gissel

Accounting Faculty Research and Publications

While regulators criticize auditors for lacking appropriate professional skepticism (SEC, 2010, 2013; PCAOB, 2012), auditing standards lack a clear, consistent definition (Nelson, 2009; Hurtt, Brown-Liburd, Earley, & Krishnamoorthy, 2013), leaving application of professional skepticism “open to interpretation” (Glover & Prawitt, 2013, p. 2). If individual auditors view professional skepticism as open to interpretation (i.e., subjective), auditors may believe they are appropriately applying standards on professional skepticism based on their individual interpretations. However, if regulators apply a different definition of professional skepticism when reviewing auditors’ work, this may help explain ongoing criticisms from regulators stating auditors lack appropriate professional skepticism. The …

Consumer Resilience And Consumer Attitude Towards Traumatic Events, Dongjun Rew, Michael Minor

Faculty Publications - College of Business

The purpose of this study is to explore consumer resilience’s role and effect on the relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and consumer attitude. There is little research on consumer resilience in the marketing disciplines even though the relevance of the construct has increased in other fields of study. To explore the role and effect of resilience, this study developed hypothetical conditions, in which this study assumes that each respondent is exposed to news of a traumatic incident or an experience, such as a terrorist attack or gun violence. Confirmatory factor analysis is conducted to verify each construct’s validity, and …

Supply Chain Contracts, Coordination, And Ego Networks. A Research Proposal, Torsten Doering, Max Winterburn

Articles & Book Chapters

The potential of interest alignment between independent firms through supply chain contracts (SCC)is not fully utilized. An exhausting amount of analytical research indicates advantages of SCCs, buttheir use in practice is limited (Cachon, 2003). This article aims to illuminate the purpose of supply chain specific contracts as an interorganizational coordination tool, as seen through the lens of organizational theory. The central question of this study relates to the conditions and antecedents of supply chain contract use, with an emphasis on vertical dyadic and secondary horizontal links between companies in a supply chain. A review shows that this topic can benefit …
