Management Recommendations For Working With Journalism And New Media Unions, Christopher A. Badurek, Arien Rozelle

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

Unions organization is increasingly of interest in the media today, particularly in the case of union organization efforts in New York state. In light of this trend, the ways informal organizations such as union membership impact formal organizations and businesses overall are explored through the lens of micro, macro, and macro levels of organizational behavior. In particular, the role of journalists as employees is considered in the context of large, established media organizations and in start-up new media organizations. A comparison of these two sectors provides context in developing managerial recommendations for leaders to consider when working with unionized labor …

Additionally, it also set up a good example for other businesses interested in global expansion.

Putting The Social In Social Media: How Human Connection Triggers Engagement, Stephanie Adomavicius Nov 2021

Putting The Social In Social Media: How Human Connection Triggers Engagement, Stephanie Adomavicius

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

Social media has become the preferred channel of information and has altered patterns of interaction and connection. As a result, society now revolves around a two-way form of communication with constant dialogue and instant responses. Public relations practitioners have had to adapt and change their strategy in order to keep up with the times, and because of this, engagement is now considered to be a measurement of success.

In terms of social media, engagement is how users interact with content and participate in online conversations. This study will uncover what causes people to engage on social media and identify the …

Selection Into Mixed Marriages: Evidence From North Carolina, 1894-1906, Matthew T. Gregg Jan 2015

Selection Into Mixed Marriages: Evidence From North Carolina, 1894-1906, Matthew T. Gregg

Business Faculty Publications

Using a novel dataset from agricultural censuses and geological sources, I examine the selec- tion into mixed marriages between whites and Cherokee Indians in North Carolina during the late nineteenth century. I find that the well-documented wealth advantage of Cherokee Indian households containing white husbands is driven mostly by positive selection. Thus, once family fixed effects are controlled for, the observed intermarriage premium is completely eliminated. (JEL D03, N31, O12.)

Visiting Nurse Services Of Newport And Bristol County: Increasing Program Awareness For The Help At Home Program, Nick Villeneuve, Monique Fedora, Jon Nessa, Kevin Nash, Joel Cooper, Arnold Robinson

Business

We came up with the idea of using a cost analysis to clearly demonstrate the advantage of home care vs. hospitalization. John Hopkins Bay view Medical Center conducted a study within their geriatrics unit to test their Hospital At Home program against typical on-site care at the hospital. The study was held over the course of 30 days involving hundreds of patients across three cities and the results were staggering. Not only was at home care 32% cheaper ($5,081 versus $7,480) but also overall customer satisfaction was significantly higher.

Bristol Maritime Center Operations Manual, Hank Kniskern, Ellen Hassett, Arnold Robinson Jan 2014

Bristol Maritime Center Operations Manual, Hank Kniskern, Ellen Hassett, Arnold Robinson

Business

Economic studies have indicated that visiting boaters spend between $25‐$300 per day per person ashore. The upper end of this average were visitors associated with regattas or events. $70 was the average expenditure used in the Bristol projections. It is important to note that Bristol’s marketing initiative can have a major influence on the level of visitor spending. For instance, coupons and information about local stores and restaurants do have a positive effect. Promoting the harbor for yacht club cruise events is not only appreciated by the event organizers, but is financially advantageous to Bristol.

Community Preparatory School: Alumni Relations Plan, Arnold Robinson

Marketing and Communications

When trying to get people to understand your message, you can use the Uses and Gratifications theory which talks about how people tend to pay attention when they are entertained, informed, their opinions get reinforced and they have a sense of belonging. Our message will get people to pay attention because the Alumni already have a sense of belonging to CPS, and it informs and reinforces their opinions about caring for their Alma mater. We will get Alumni to believe this message by holding events and other activities in which they can be a part of.

Linked Into A Job?: The Ethical Considerations Of Recruiting Through Linkedin, Meghan E. Parez

Management

LinkedIn’s goal is to help business professionals meet, make business deals, inquire about jobs, and find careers through connections with people that members already know. This research study will investigate the ethical practices of LinkedIn recruitment. Students’ awareness of the methods for effective use, as well as the damaging elements of a LinkedIn profile will be examined. LinkedIn is an effective, helpful tool for recruiting candidates and for job searching; however, the best results will come to those who use LinkedIn professionally and with caution. Our findings indicate that despite its risks, jobseekers and employers can benefit from using LinkedIn.

Trinity Restoration Inc.: Southside Cultural Center Economic Impact Study, Joel Cooper, Alexi Schwartzkopff, Victoria Moradsky, Billy Keeley, Mohannad Aldaham, Arnold Robinson

Business

Economic development has shifted from location-oriented business models towards a more all-encompassing model that recognizes the advancement of human capital or intellectual property as continuously increasing in value. This microcosmic characteristic of development extends to aid in the growth of society as a whole. The Arts and Culture attract a demographic of inspired and motivated people to the area. It results in the development of the society surrounding art venues. The general population will always seek out entertainment, by installing a venue of artistic expression in South Providence that will motivate the community and propel development. This phenomena has been …

Broad Street Business Inventory, Michelle Abramowitz, Kelsie Foley, Jackie Melendez, Arnold Robinson Jan 2013

Broad Street Business Inventory, Michelle Abramowitz, Kelsie Foley, Jackie Melendez, Arnold Robinson

Business

Over previous year, SWAP had compiled an impressive inventory of existing businesses on Broad Street. In addition, partner organizations such as the City and Community Works had other sets of information. The first step in an update was to have a team of RWU students update and expand the inventory. As they did this, they also undertake community research, identification of key issues on the street under the direction of SWAP’s professional staff. This more complete inventory can be the basis to identify key segments of the business community (restaurants, communication, clubs, retail, auto repair, etc.).
