Consumer-generated media (CGM) are created when consumers submit, review or respond to online content. The bulk of research into CGM has focussed upon its use by consumers, with less research examining the use of CGM by small businesses. This article discusses small business sector use of online technologies such as CGM, concentrating on tourism small businesses as a key industry sector affected by CGM activities. Consumer Experiences Of Accommodation Deals Purchased Via Social Coupon Promotions: An Australian Perspective, Carmen Cox

Carmen Cox

A Study Of Web 2.0 Tourism Sites: A Usability And Web Features Perspective, Carmen Sellitto, Stephen Burgess, Carmen Cox, Jeremy Buultjens

Carmen Cox

The term Web 2.0 was coined around 2004 and was used to describe more interactive types of websites developed after the dot-com crash. An important characteristic of Web 2.0 sites is premised on being able to incorporate various technologies and applications within the site to enhance functionality. This enhanced functionality is primarily associated with such sites being able to publish and display diverse content - content that is user-contributed, or where the site might draw information synergistically from a third party. This increased functionality potentially affects two traditional areas of website implementation. Firstly, the embedding of applications within a website …

Thailand is currently putting considerable effort into their attempts to attract a new type of traveller, the medical tourist, to visit their destination for a combination of health, medical and travel purposes. While significant research effort has been devoted to the ethical and legal issues related to medical tourism, relative limited research has focussed on the destination decision making process of people who choose to engage in medical tourism. This paper presents the results of an online survey which explores the travel motivations, information search behavior and destination choice criteria of a sample of prospective medical tourists to Thailand.

Trust Perceptions Of Online Travel Information By Different Content Creators: Some Social And Legal Implications., Stephen Burgess, Carmine Sellitto, Carmen Cox, Jeremy Buultjens

Consumers are increasingly turning to the online environment to provide information to assist them in making purchase decisions related to travel products. They often rely on travel recommendations from different sources, such as sellers, independent experts and, increasingly, other consumers. A new type of online content, user-generated content (UGC), provides a number of legal and social challenges to providers and users of that content, especially in relation to areas such as defamation, misrepresentation and social embarrassment. This paper reports research that examined the level of trustworthiness of online travel information from these different sources. The study used a survey of …

The method used to identify these opportunities was based on a series of industry workshops throughout Australia and a follow-up Delphi survey. The examination of the Sydney 2000 Olympics case has revealed that, beyond the visitors the event will attract in its own right, the tourism industry in Sydney and Australia more generally has the potential to benefit from a range of effects. In particular, the use of a collective effort to assist in devising a ‘creative’ idea was …

Guest Perceptions Of Hotel Loyalty, David Mason, Carmen Tideswell, Elizabeth Roberts Jun 2008

Guest Perceptions Of Hotel Loyalty, David Mason, Carmen Tideswell, Elizabeth Roberts

Carmen Cox

This research reports on a qualitative survey of hotel guest loyalty. The approach was unusual in several ways: It sought to measure loyalty in the general population of hotel users rather than selecting a population already known to be loyal, and instead of trying to identify personality traits in the guests’ psychology that might be important, or ranking features of the hotel that might be determining factors, guests were simply asked what the term hotel loyalty meant to them. This approach has the advantage of not being influenced by any particular theory or restricted by the scope of the questions …
