Fulling Around: The Shaker Fulling Mill At South Union, Kentucky, Donna C. Parker, Jonathan J. Jeffrey

SCL Faculty and Staff Publications

The fulling mill was an essential component of any successful early-19th century woolen industry. Fullers applied finishing techniques to cloth in order to create a stronger, more attractive, and more useful fabric. In 1813 the Shakers at Kentucky’s South Union community constructed a fulling mill that serviced their own demands for textile finishing processes as well as those of area residents. The fulling mill, aided by the Shakers’ three-year-old carding mill, developed by the 1860s into a full-fledged woolen factory.

Income Growth Across The U.S. States: An Empirical Analysis, Weixiong He Jan 1999

Income Growth Across The U.S. States: An Empirical Analysis, Weixiong He

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

The purpose of this study is to test the convergence hypothesis that prevails the neo-classical economic literature. In light of research on cross-country economic growth, the paper is adopting the same kind of methodology in studying income growth across U.S. states. The paper starts with a survey of literature in the study of growth of convergence. Then it tries to define the term of “convergence” in various economic implications, in particular the notion of “ð-Convergence” versus “ß-Convergence”, “conditional convergence” versus “absolute convergence”, and such popular notion as “club convergence”. The paper then goes into the quantitative analysis of U.S. per …

The Economic Development And Environment Degradation In China, Fei Luo Jan 1999

The Economic Development And Environment Degradation In China, Fei Luo

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

This paper is mainly to present the interrelationship between economic growth and environment pollution in China. The past two decades of drastic economic development in China has caused many environment problems and inflicted great pressure on China’s further development. On the other hand, the deplete of natural resources and damages to environment quality have also cost China a big part of GNP growth and posed threat to Chinese people’s health and living standard.

This paper also illustrates the reasons for China’s current environment condition. It, by employing the theory of Sustainable Development and also analyzing the current global environment, criticizes …

Do Migrants Rob Jobs?: New Evidence From Australia, Gary Gang Tian, Jordan Shan Jan 1999

Do Migrants Rob Jobs?: New Evidence From Australia, Gary Gang Tian, Jordan Shan

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

This study contributes to the recent debate on immigration and unemployment in Australia by investigating the causal linkage between immigration and unemployment. The question of whether `immigrants rob jobs' is examined by identifying the sources of unemployment through causal linkages between unemployment and other key variables such as immigration. The research finds no Granger causality between immigration and unemployment, but does run from industrial structural change to the high unemployment rate in Australia. This research also finds that both GDP growth and immigration inflow reinforce each other in the course of economic development in Australia.

Analyzing Destination Images: A Perceptual Charting Approach, Sara Dolnicar, K. Grabler, J. A. Mazanec

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

Heterogeneity of perceptions is a neglected issue in market segmentation studies. Only recently parametric approaches toward modeling segmented perception-preference structures such as combined MDS and Latent Class procedures have been introduced. A completely different nonparametric method is based on topology-sensitive vector quantization (VQ) for consumers-by-brands-by-attributes data. It maps the segment-specific perceptual structures into bar charts with multiple brand positions exhibiting perceptual distinctiveness or similarity. A brief introduction into the VQ methodology is followed by a sample study on three urban destinations competing on the world travel markets. City images serve as the underlying behavioral constructs. Preferential data are based on …

Open Market Operations Of The Central Bank Of Nigeria: Theory, Development And Growth, Ojo M. O. Jan 1999

Open Market Operations Of The Central Bank Of Nigeria: Theory, Development And Growth, Ojo M. O.

CBN Occasional Papers

The aim of the paper is to assess the efficacy of the open market operations of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), as an instrument of monetary management. Against the adopted framework of the instrument, it analyses the movements in open market transactions and changes in the portfolio of treasury bill holdings of the CBN and other financial institutions. The initial application of the instrument was quite successful, resulting in the sale of large volumes of the securities and consequent decline in the portfolio of CBN’s holdings of government securities. These trends were reversed in the latter part of the …

Developing Ireland As A Successful Garden Tourism Destination, Catherine Elizabeth Gorman Jan 1999

Developing Ireland As A Successful Garden Tourism Destination, Catherine Elizabeth Gorman

Conference papers

The marketing of Ireland as a garden destination has been evolving over the past six years. The complexity of Ireland’s history and modern circumstances have led to the demise of Irish gardens over the past three centuries. An initiative entitled The Great Gardens of Ireland Restoration Programme has been operated under the Operational Programme for Tourism 1994-99 which has been funded by the European Union. The outcome of the scheme has been twofold; the funding has rescued a significant part of Irish heritage and history; it has provided many new comprehensive tourist attractions to both the domestic and overseas market. …

Business As Usual: The Dynamics Of Government‐Business Relations In The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Tuck Hong James Tang

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This is an attempt to evaluate the implications of Hong Kong's political transition topost-colonial rule for economic governance in the SAR beyond the 'Beijing versus HongKong' perspective. The article examines the changing government-business dynamics inHong Kong after the reversion by focusing on three inter-related dimensions: economicideology; institutional and policy framework; and the new political environment inpost-colonial Hong Kong. By challenging the assertion that Hong Kong is returning to thepre-Patten colonial order under Chinese management, it argues that economic governancein Hong Kong has always been more complex than has been characterized in the literature.A conceptual framework incorporating the dynamic interplay of …

Housing Policies In Maine: A Historical Overview, Frank O’Hara Jan 1999

Housing Policies In Maine: A Historical Overview, Frank O’Hara

Maine Policy Review

Frank O’Hara traces the evolution of Maine’s housing policies from Maine’s settlement after the Revolutionary War to the current era, where concerns about sprawl and the preservation of communities have come to the fore. In doing so, O’Hara points out that the approach to housing has always reflected more than a desire to ensure every person has adequate shelter. Rather, it reflects core values and beliefs about society, our sense of beauty, and our relationship to the environment and one another. O’Hara urges policymakers to keep these broader constructs in mind when addressing Maine’s future housing needs. As history shows, …

Maine’S Future Housing Needs: An Mpr Interview With David Lakari, David Lakari Jan 1999

Maine’S Future Housing Needs: An Mpr Interview With David Lakari, David Lakari

Maine Policy Review

Since 1994, David Lakari has been director and chair of the Maine State Housing Authority. The Maine State Housing Authority is an independent state agency and a $1.5 billion financial institution. Its mission is to help Maine’s low- and moderate-income citizens obtain and maintain decent, safe, and affordable housing and services suitable to their needs. In this interview, Lakari focuses on his concerns for the future, in particular, the need to find suitable housing options for one of Maine’s fastest-growing demographic groups—the middle-income elderly. While Maine has been doing a good job of building the capacity to house its wealthy …

Ten Years Of Affordable Housing Policy: Is Maine Making Progress-- A Symposium, Elizabeth H. Mitchell, Dennis P. King, James B. Hatch, Jay Hardy

Maine Policy Review

In December 1987 Governor McKernan appointed a 30-member, statewide task force to address the issue of affordable housing in Maine. The task force was charged with investigating the quality and cost of affordable housing for lower- and middle-income families, and recommending a set of actions to improve the quality of existing housing as well as to increase the supply of housing. In September 1998 the Task Force issued a report that prescribed a number of local and regional—as well as private and public—solutions to the problem of affordable housing. More than ten years later Maine housing advocates note that the …

A Challenge For The Next Decade: Preserving Affordable Rental Housing, Laura Burns Jan 1999

A Challenge For The Next Decade: Preserving Affordable Rental Housing, Laura Burns

Maine Policy Review

Many of Maine’s low-income families and elderly residents have been able to secure affordable housing with help from a Section 8 certificate, which allows residents to pay no more than 30 percent of their income toward rent and ensures the federal government will make up the difference. Over the years, much of the development of Section 8 housing projects has been assisted by financial incentives and agreements between private and non-profit owners and the federal government. Yet recent changes in federal legislation remove many of these incentives and the agreements that go with them. As a result, some of Maine’s …

The Importance Of Moderately Priced Rental Housing To Continued Economic Growth (Or, Portland’S Rental Housing Plight), Erin Maclean Jan 1999

The Importance Of Moderately Priced Rental Housing To Continued Economic Growth (Or, Portland’S Rental Housing Plight), Erin Maclean

Maine Policy Review

Currently, the Greater Portland, Maine area is experiencing a significant shortage in both subsidized rental housing and moderately priced, market-rate rental housing. According to Erin MacLean, the problem is that even with heightened demand, historically low interest rates, and historically high rents, developers are finding that new, market-rate housing is too expensive to build in Portland. The lack of moderately priced housing has affected local business owners as well, who report they are finding it difficult to hire workers in the $8 to $15 range. Their efforts to recruit and retain workers place an upward pressure on wages, which can …
