Relationships Between Accountability, Job Satisfaction, And Trust, Peg Thoms, Jennifer J. Dose, Kimberly S. Scott
Business Educator Scholarship
With the trend toward self-management comes increasing accountability of individuals to their coworkers and organizations. There is an implicit assumption that workers like self-management and the accompanying accountability, despite little supporting empirical evidence. This study examines the idea that workers’ perceptions of their level of accountability are related to their job satisfaction. A significant correlation was found between job satisfaction and perceived accountability to coworkers and perceived accountability to management. In addition, we found that accountability to both coworkers and management was positively related to trust in supervisors and managers. However, only two aspects of accountability—manager and coworker awareness—seem to …

The implementation of the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) requires major organizational change for employment and training agencies. The initiative emphasizes coordination, collaboration and communication among organizations for better service delivery. At this time, states are developing systems that will enable them to address the needs of all customers seeking employment. The Institute for Community Inclusion (ICI) has conducted state case studies for two purposes: (1) to identify how states have begun the process of collaboration under the new mandates of WIA; and (2) to understand the impact on customers with disabilities. It is difficult from this distance and without adequate Internet access to know precisely what happened to produce the settlement in the collective bargaining process between the owners and players in major league baseball. London is a major metropolitan area of the world with no lack of communications with the outside world, but quite frankly the level of interest in baseball is minimal. So it is with some trepidation that I try to comment on what has happened in the world of baseball over the past few weeks.

Taxes And Quality: A Market-Level Analysis, Jennifer S. James, Julian M. Alston

A conventional assumption of product homogeneity when the commodity of interest is actually heterogeneous will lead to errors in an analysis of the incidence of policies, such as taxes. In this article, an equilibrium displacement model is used to derive analytical solutions for price, quantity, and quality effects of ad valorem and per unit taxes. The results show how parameters determine the effects of tax policies on quality. The potential for tax-induced distortions in quality, and the distributive consequences of those distortions, are illustrated in a case study of the market for Australian wine.

Recent concerns relative to California farm gate prices for wheat and a lack of profitability in wheat production has been expressed by a group of California wheat growers. Their dissatisfaction has resulted in their consideration to form a California wheat grower cooperative. The cooperative would become the marketing agent for the growers and potentially allow growers to pool their production for greater market power as well as capture profits beyond the farm gate. Two feasibility issues are addressed by the study: 1) The organizational feasibility of forming the cooperative, and 2) The economic feasibility of a California wheat growers cooperative …

This report provides a profile of nonresident visitors to Montana who visited one or both of the national parks or neither park. It is based on a four-month study period from June through September of 2001 and describes visitors in terms of demographics, trip characteristics, travel behavior, visitor satisfaction and observation.

Social entrepreneurship is a new phenomenon in Singapore. Unlike the US, where there are entrepreneurship programs offered at various ACCSB accredited universities such programs do not as yet exist in Asia. The motivations for social entrepreneurship in Asia differ from those in developed countries. While as social entrepreneurship often stem from the social agenda of successful entrepreneurs who are motivated to repay society, the recent trend of social entrepreneurship in Asia may stem from initiatives directed at political liberalisation and the development of civil society on the part of existing governments. The development office accepts a gift of a house from a prestigious donor. The faculty has developed and approved a new core curriculum. The institution recently constructed a new campus center. While these circumstances sound no alarms, all involve elements of risk. The welcome gift of the house, later discovered to be contaminated with mold, will involve a costly clean up. The group of cultural tourists has received a lot of attention in the past decades. Nevertheless only few attempts have been made to study the characteristics of the “culture tourism market segment”. Besides, it is often implicitly assumed that this segment is a homogeneous group of tourists. It was reported yesterday that Jeremy Bloom one of the top mogul skiers in the U.S. is seeking an injunction against the NCAA. Bloom wants to play football at the University of Colorado this year but NCAA regulations will not allow it because Bloom has received money for personal appearances, endorsements, and modeling. These are related to his skiing skills, not his football prowess. Making Justice Sense Of Local-Expatriate Compensation Disparity: Mitigation By Local Referents, Ideological Explanations, And Interpersonal Sensitivity In China-Foreign Joint Ventures, Chao C. Chen, Jaepil Choi, Chu-Cheng Chi

We examined how local employees of international joint ventures (IJVs) perceived disparity between their compensation and foreign expatriates' compensation from equity theory and social justice perspectives. Chinese locals perceived less fairness when comparing their compensation with expatriates' than when comparing it with other locals'. However, fairness vis-a-vis expatriates increased if the locals were compensated higher than their peers in other IJVs or endorsed ideological explanations for expatriates' advantage. Furthermore, expatriates' interpersonal sensitivity toward locals reduced the effect of disparity on perceived fairness. Finally, perceived compensation fairness was related positively to compensation satisfaction but negatively to intentions to quit.

In this study, the authors examined the findings and implications of the research on trust in leadership that has been conducted during the past 4 decades. First, the study provides estimates of the primary relationships between trust in leadership and key outcomes, antecedents, and correlates (k = 106). Second, the study explores how specifying the construct with alternative leadership referents (direct leaders vs. organizational leadership) and definitions (types of trust) results in systematically different relationships between trust in leadership and outcomes and antecedents. Direct leaders (e.g., supervisors) appear to be a particularly important referent of trust. Last, a theoretical framework …

This study examined the effects of assessor-related factors (i.e., type of assessor) and assessee-related factors (i.e., type of assessee profile) on the construct validity of assessment center ratings. In particular, 3 types of assessors (26 industrial/organizational [I/O] psychologists, 20 managers, and 27 students), rated assessee performances that varied according to cross-exercise consistency (i.e., relatively inconsistent vs. relatively consistent) and dimension differentiation (relatively undifferentiated vs. relatively differentiated). Construct validity evidence was established for only one assessee profile and only in the I/O psychologist and managerial samples. This change is being driven by increased wild rice production, changes in wild rice demand, and buyer concerns relative to product quality and food safety. Last weekend at Wimbledon the traditional fortnight at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club ended with a victory by Serena Williams in yet another all Williams Ladies Final. This was the third Williams sister meeting in a Grand Slam final, and the second win in a row for Serena who defeated her older sister just a few weeks earlier in the French Open final. Venus won the first of Grand Slam sister events at the U.S. Open in 2001.

There is no shortage of analyses of the problems of Maine’s economy, or of proposed solutions. Once again, a number of recent reports have argued that Maine has a highly unfavorable business climate, characterized by excessive taxes and excessive regulation. These reports go on to argue that Maine must improve its business climate through such suggested changes as an overhaul of the tax system, elimination of property taxes on business equipment purchases, reducing the state’s regulatory burden, and reducing Maine’s supposedly high “tax burden.” Although the support for these proposals is framed as being “irrefutable,” in reality many of the …
