The End Of Institutional Repositories And The Beginning Of Social Academic Research Service: An Enhanced Role For Libraries, Stuart M. Basefsky
The End Of Institutional Repositories And The Beginning Of Social Academic Research Service: An Enhanced Role For Libraries, Stuart M. Basefsky
Stuart Basefsky
As more and more universities establish Institutional Repositories (IR), awareness is developing about the limitations of IRs in enhancing the academic research service. The concept of an IR needs to be expanded to include the integration of the processes that transform intellectual endeavor into a broadening array of academic and research support services which are fundamentally social. These include, but are not limited to – (1) sharing institutionally developed intellectual product (traditional IR) (2) informing others of the availability of this product with defined purpose (3) collecting additional academically relevant materials in digital formats using IRs (4) disseminating timely information …

Intensified Regulatory Scrutiny And Bank Distress In New York City During The Great Depression,” With Patrick Van Horn, Gary Richardson
Intensified Regulatory Scrutiny And Bank Distress In New York City During The Great Depression,” With Patrick Van Horn, Gary Richardson
Gary Richardson
Bank distress peaked in New York City, at the center of the United States money market, in July and August 1931, when the banking crisis peaked in Germany and before Britain abandoned the gold standard. This article tests competing theories about the causes of New York’s banking crisis. The cause appears to have been intensified regulatory scrutiny, which was a delayed reaction to the failure of the Bank of United States, rather than the exposure of money center banks to events overseas.

State Violence And The Writer: Towards The Dialectics Of Intellectual Militancy In Transcending Postcolonial Nigerian Contradictions., Uzoechi Nwagbara
State Violence And The Writer: Towards The Dialectics Of Intellectual Militancy In Transcending Postcolonial Nigerian Contradictions., Uzoechi Nwagbara
Dr Uzoechi Nwagbara
The hub of this paper is how State violence manifests in the Nigerian novel, particularly in the context of the reprehensible postcolonial order that impinges on nation-building. By definition, State violence means forceful, coercive and high-handed appropriation of the apparatuses of the State by the ruling class for political and selfish ends, which results in physical, psychological and ethical harm or damage. In circumventing the contradictions posed by this inept practice, intellectual militancy is the option to bring change in Nigeria as illustrated by Nigerian writers (novelists) in their works. Intellectual militancy amounts to revolutionary aesthetics, political education and intellectual …
Ensuring A Decent Global Workplace: Labor Rights Belong In Trade Agreements, Lance A. Compa
Ensuring A Decent Global Workplace: Labor Rights Belong In Trade Agreements, Lance A. Compa
Lance A Compa
[Excerpt] Linking workers' rights to international trade is an idea whose time has come and stayed, despite the best efforts of free trade ideologues to chase it away. In looming congressional debates about "fast track" negotiating authority, the Bush administration and Congress confront powerful demands from workers, trade unionists and a wider public for rules protecting human rights and labor rights, not just corporate investments, in trade agreements.
Holding The Line: Labor’S Safety & Health Movement, Lance A. Compa
Holding The Line: Labor’S Safety & Health Movement, Lance A. Compa
Lance A Compa
[Excerpt] Is OSHA finally enforcing the law after years of laxity? Or, as most activists and analysts involved in safety and health believe, do the high-profile penalties constitute an attempt by OSHA to shore up its reputation? A recent independent federal study, the conclusions of which were confirmed by the agency's own consultants, found OSHA in a state of "total paralysis." Another, private, study by the National Safe Workplace Institute showed that OSHA's inspections are inadequate and untimely, that the agency consistently fails to insure that what hazards it does uncover are corrected, and that it often and unjustifiably reduces …

Elementos Endógenos Como Fatores Do Desenvolvimento Local Das Cidades: Uma Reflexão Sobre O Município De Piraquara/Pr, Jorge Amaro Bastos Alves
Jorge Amaro Bastos Alves

Research Assistants In The Clever Country, Michael K. Organ, S. Svensen
Research Assistants In The Clever Country, Michael K. Organ, S. Svensen
Michael Organ
In this paper, we outline some of the problems facing research workers in Australian universities, with an emphasis on research assistants, the lowest classification of paid research worker. It is concluded that, while conditions have improved slightly since 1978, research assistants are still among the most marginalised public sector employees, and subjected to employment conditions which should be considered unacceptable in a society which values the benefits accruing from research activities.

Research Assistants In The Clever Country, Michael K. Organ, S. Svensen

This paper examines the employment conditions of research assistants in universities in the context of the stated intention of the Australian government to transfonn Australia into the 'clever country'. Research assistants have played an important role in Australia's research efforts. The growing teaching and administrative workloads of academic staff. and the increasing sophistication and complexity of research methodologies. have increased the demands on research assistants and the importance of their contribution. Despite this. there has been little improvement in the employment conditions of research assistants. These conditions include the absence of any job security; lack of career structure and development: …

Job Loss: Causes, Consequences, And Policy Responses, Kristin F. Butcher, Kevin F. Hallock
Kevin F Hallock
From 2001 to 2003, 5.3 million workers were displaced. Beyond quantifying the numbers of jobs lost lie important questions about gains and losses from these changes and what policies may affect them. These questions will be addressed at an upcoming Chicago Fed conference.

Many economists agree that the United States’ openness to competition and technological change raises our living standards, but sometimes results in job losses. This article summarizes “Job Loss: Causes Consequences, and Policy Responses,” a conference which was cosponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank Chicago and the Joyce Foundation.

State-of-art long term plan for Solid Waste Management (SWM) including collection, transportation and disposal of Solid Waste (SW), as well as for monitoring of SWM, by generating integrated solution could be generated through the application of advanced technologies so that the policy interventions may prove to be highly successful and cost-effective. Currently, SWM plans are either non-existent or are riddled with serious problems and limitations. SWM plans are extremely expensive. Long term planning could be done for collection, transportation and disposal of SW in such a manner that Waste Collection Points, transportation routes, schedules regarding transportation, loading, unloading, stoppage etc, …
Aesthetics Of Resistance And Sustainability: Tanure Ojaide And The Niger Delta Question, Uzoechi Nwagbara
Aesthetics Of Resistance And Sustainability: Tanure Ojaide And The Niger Delta Question, Uzoechi Nwagbara
Dr Uzoechi Nwagbara
The paper endeavours to establish the centrality of ecocriticism in the poetry of Tanure Ojaide. It will be argued in this paper that Ojaide’s poetry negates ecological imperialism, a capitalist practice that destroys the periphery’s natural world. In Ojaide’s poetics, there is an illustration of the nature and strategies he employs to actualise resistance literature – essentially premised on ecocritical literature. Ecocritical literature or ecocriticism is a form of literary criticism that considers the nature of the relationship existing between literature and the natural environment. Ojaide’s raison d'être for this artistic preoccupation is simple: the environmental and ecological predation in …
Banking For All And For Everything, Vijaya Varma
Banking For All And For Everything, Vijaya Varma
VIJAYA KRUSHNA VARMA Mr
Varma suggests radical bank reforms to usher in fully liberalized and transparent economic system. The time has come to radically reform banking sector to the ultimate level where there will be no NPAs, unemployment, black money, fake currency, economic recession and corruption. Liberalise the banking sector to establish a bank branch at every village or colony having population of 2500 so that each bank shall handle approximately 2000 accounts. * To give every citizen above the age of 15 years a portable bank savings account with permanent account number from birth to death. This portable bank account can be shifted …

How To Prevent Npas In Banks, Vijaya Krushna Varma Mr
VIJAYA KRUSHNA VARMA Mr
Varma suggests radical bank reforms to prevent NPAs in banking sector. Prevention is better than cure. The problem should be tackled at the source itself before it gets monster size. Instead of finding solutions and measures to reduce NPAs, the banking sector should be restructured so that there is no scope for NPAs or bad loans generation in banks.

Making Partnerships Work, David Cooke Dr
Making Partnerships Work, David Cooke Dr
David Cooke
An understanding of the motivation of corporations to give to the not-for-profit sector is vital in more effectively raising funds. A recent study has shown that a return on investment is important for maximum giving by the corporate sector and a business case built around this premise will be more effective than an appeal to altruism.

The library in today's world must transform itself into an agent of change. Basefsky discusses why informing, discussing, soliciting, targeting, teaming and stretching need to be implemented if libraries want to remain useful and the institutions they serve wish to prosper.
