Korean Mask-Dance And Aristotle's Poetics, Teayong Pakr
Korean Mask-Dance And Aristotle's Poetics, Teayong Pakr
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Korean mask-dance is the traditional theatre of Korea. It was formerly the country's most well-known form of drama among traditional theatrical entertainments. This study explores the theatrical structure of Korean mask-dance as well as its historical background.
The rise of Korean mask-dance may be traced back to the shamanistic village ritual which gradually became similar to the extant form after absorbing aspects of the Buddhism festival through the Goryeo Dynasty, which lasted from 918-1392). During the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), the mask-dance had acquired its basic form with aspects of professional theatrical entertainment. The mask-dances have been performed during traditional holidays …

The Barzakh Of Flamenco: Tracing The Spirituality, Locality And Musicality Of Flamenco From South Of The Strait Of Gibraltar, Tania Flores
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Flamenco performance – which scholars often describe in terms of the three dimensions of cante, or singing, baile, or dance, and toque, or instrumentation – is a complex synthesis of cultural influences across several centuries. In discussing the evolution of flamenco, scholars typically begin with the history of the gitanos, the subgroup of the Romani or Gypsy people that settled in Spain. Drawing upon a large body of ethnographic, historic and scientific evidence, scholars agree that the gitanos originated in the northwestern regions of contemporary India and
Pakistan – specifically, Rajasthan and the Punjab region (Iovita 275; …

Choreographic Design And Process Of Dance, Kathleen Higgins
Undergraduate Research Conference
When I began the choreographic process, I was inspired by all of the emotions one might feel at a dance audition. However, with much though and manipulation of my original movement, I realized that the body image a dancer has of herself, and the body image for which she is continuously striving, was the underlying message that I wanted my choreography to communicate.

Beyond Colonization, Commodification, And Reclamation: Recognizing And Retheorizing The Role Of Religion In Hula, Christine E. Chan
Beyond Colonization, Commodification, And Reclamation: Recognizing And Retheorizing The Role Of Religion In Hula, Christine E. Chan
Pomona Senior Theses
Given the history of colonization and commodification in Hawai`i, it is no surprise that non-traditional performances are met with critical reception. However, in this thesis, I hope to destabilize the popular binary juxtaposition of authentic Hawaiian art and (mis)appropriated tourist kitsch. I argue that hula has been Orientalized and wrongly associated with religion not only by colonizers and the tourist industry, but also by those whose response to colonization is a call for purity and authenticity in the practice of Hawaiian culture. I am specifically referring to people who romanticize and mythologize hula and Hawai`i prior to European contact. Therefore, …

So You Think You Know Dance?: Popular Dance And Cultural Identity On Television, Eleni Koutroumanis
So You Think You Know Dance?: Popular Dance And Cultural Identity On Television, Eleni Koutroumanis
American Studies Senior Theses
Dancing has reached new levels of popularity in America due to its publicity in new television shows over the past seven years. These shows have changed the image and ways of dance world, but more importantly the shows have brought dance into the Public Sphere and allowed the excluded to comment on, and in a way join, the dance world. Furthermore, these shows are bringing forward commentary on subaltern counterparts of two levels. One is dance culture, and those who make dance what it is today, being acknowledged in a greater public. The other refers to subaltern counterparts of a …
Living Culture Embodied: Constructing Meaning In The Contra Dance Community, Kathryn E. Young
Living Culture Embodied: Constructing Meaning In The Contra Dance Community, Kathryn E. Young
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In light of both the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and the efforts of the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage in producing the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, it has become clear that work with intangible cultural heritage in museums necessitates staff to carry out ethnographic fieldwork among heritage communities. In order to illustrate this methodology, an ethnographic study was conducted in the Denver contra dance community to better explore conceptions of value and meaning related to the community by its members. Further, the contra dance findings point to certain issues related to defining …
