Subjetividad E Intersubjetividad De Los Diminutivos En -It En El Español Amazónico Peruano, Margarita Jara Yupanqui
Department of World Languages Faculty Research

Hispanic Studies Faculty Publications

Repensando La Discapacidad En España Y Latinoamérica: La Producción Cultural Hispánica De Autores/As Con Diversidad Funcional En Los Siglos Xx Y Xxi, Montserrat Fuente-Camacho
Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Género Y Sexualidad En Seis Novelas Del Siglo Xxi, Sandra Chang Raak
Dissertations
From its inception Latin American literature has used gender and sexuality as rhetorical devices to approach the topic of cultural identity. For instance, Hernán Cortés in his Cartas de Relación embodies a type of masculinity that overdetermined the lives of the Amerindian people. Centuries later, the modernismo movement headed by Rubén Darío reacted to a Latin American societal shift towards the prevalence of a materialistic culture brought about by the advent of industrial civilization. During the 1960s Latin American literature experienced a rapid blooming that has come to be known as El Boom. Both landmarks, modernism and El Boom …

The Representation Of Syrian Refugee Women In The Spanish Media. Comparative Study Of The Profile Projected By The Media, The Imaginary Of The Spanish Society And The Identity Of Syrian Refugee Women., María Costea
English Language Institute
This paper analyzes the media representation of Syrian refugee women projected by the newspapers ABC, El País and eldiario.es, differentiating the nuances of the stereotyping of this group according to the ideological line of the media. The profiles obtained from this analysis are contrasted, through a triangulated research, with the imaginary of the Spanish society and the real profile of these women to elucidate the degree of concordance.
The Minatory Minotaur: Demythologizing Myth In “The House Of Asterion”, Evan Chiovari
The Minatory Minotaur: Demythologizing Myth In “The House Of Asterion”, Evan Chiovari
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
Recent critics of Jorge Luis Borges’s “The House of Asterion” (1947) have traced the author’s revisions in the original manuscript, charting his changing arrangement of information through the text. This essay investigates the information itself through structuralist and historicist theory. A structuralist reading analyzes Asterion’s worldview and shows how various narrators dock the integrity of his voice. Historicism probes aspects of religion, biology, and architecture to limn the true complexity of Asterion’s ties with society. Together, these theories reveal a trove of intricate intrigue and doubt. In this study I examine how Asterion, a reinvention of the Minotaur, is painstakingly …

Perhaps you remembered what the title of your book means from your previous experiences with Spanish. That is a great start! As you begin the equivalent of a second semester Spanish course with these materials, some of you might think about how long it has been since you studied Spanish while others may come to the class with some background knowledge. We want you to know this book has been designed with many types of learners in mind. Our goals were to address the need for students to achieve the ability to communicate in written and spoken form. We sought …

You have learned two words in a second language just by reading the title of the book. Think about that for a moment and reflect upon your prior foreign language experiences. Often, students enter language classes with previously acquired skills, be they from secondary school or another college. Many say, “I have studied Spanish for years and don’t know how to speak or write it,” while others are a bit anxious about taking a second language for the first time, but all are overwhelmed by the expensive textbooks and online packages that don’t seem to be practical or relevant. We …

Disrupting The (Post) Neoliberal Order In Latin America Through The Representation Of Fictional Corporate Office Narratives In Argentina And Mexico (2007-2010), Juliana Todescan
Spanish and Portuguese ETDs
Due to the expansion of the neoliberal and global order in Latin America in the 1990s, national states and citizens are subjected to the free market interests regulated and managed by for profit corporations and the financial industry. Considering this a critical change in the social organization of Latin America, I compare narratives from Argentina and Mexico that imagine cosmopolitan cities being colonized by the corporate logic of profit. My analysis focuses on the representation of low level office workers in Antonio Ortuño’s novel Recursos humanos (2007), Guillermo Saccomanno’s novel El oficinista (2010), and Aníbal Jarkowski’s El trabajo (2007), and …

En Busca De La Juventud Perdida, Reconciliación Y Desagravio En Carta Al Padre De Jesús Aguado, Kathryn A. Everly
Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics - All Scholarship
Jesús Aguado's recent book, Carta al padre (2016), deals openly with both physical and emotional trauma suffered at the hands of toxic masculinity. The poetic voice vindicates his younger self, abused by the father, through the written word that transfers power to the weak and disenfranchised. Lacanian naming and patriarchal structures (family, language) become transparent through Aguado's unique poetic sensibility.

Distribución De Las Funciones Retóricas De Las Citas En Los Apartados Del Trabajo Fin De Máster Escrito En Español Y En Inglés, David Sánchez-Jiménez
Publications and Research
This study correlates with a research study published in the journal Pragmalingüística, in which the contrastive use of the rhetorical functions of citations in master’s theses in Spanish and English was studied. The main objective pursued by this new research is to determine which rhetorical functions are used most frequently in the different parts of a master’s thesis and what these can accomplish in each part of the text. Following Petrić (2007), a computerized textual analysis of the rhetorical function of citation was used to study this phenomenon in a corpus of sixteen (16) theses of which eight (8) were …

La Transtextualidad En El Mal Querer De Rosalía, Susan Shelton, Susan Shelton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Destabilizing Gender And Genre: Queering The Body In Libertarias And Land And Freedom, Kathryn Everly
Destabilizing Gender And Genre: Queering The Body In Libertarias And Land And Freedom, Kathryn Everly
Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics - All Scholarship
Libertarias (1996) and Land and Freedom (1995) explore the complex situation
of women militia during the Spanish Civil War. A queer reading of the female
body in these films highlights wartime female masculinity (Halberstam) and
female solidarity. In renegotiating worn expectations of sexuality and gender,
the films question and ultimately redefine the wartime docudrama genre. The
queering of gender and genre leads to alternative versions of history that upend
the very idea of historical accuracy. The female bodies in the films transgress
entrenched binary gender norms, thus creating a uniquely queer representation
of female solidarity in the docudrama genre.

Woolf As Window: A View Into Martín Gaite’S Treatment Of Alienation In El Cuarto De Atrás, Elizabeth Cornick
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
In this article, I explore the Spanish writer Carmen Martín Gaite’s affinity with Virginia Woolf’s modernism. In particular, I analyze the modernist theme of alienation so prominent in Woolf’s To the Lighthouse that Martín Gaite expresses in her novel El cuarto de atrás (The Back Room). To do so, I provide historical analysis of Woolf’s and Martín Gaite’s respective cultures to contextualize the ways in which the writers treat modernization as an alienating condition of modernity in the novels. I focus on Woolf’s depiction of estrangement experienced by the characters Mrs. Ramsay and Lily Briscoe from To the …

Through the consideration of the figure of La Llorona in poetic narratives, these poems, which are selections from a self-produced collection of poetry in my Master’s Thesis "La Llorona in Nuevomexicana Poetic Narratives: Reflections on Writing and Memory," explore themes of identity, place, and memory, and offer a reflection on the role of women as storytellers and the possibility of reimagining the lore to tell the story of both La Llorona’s haunting liminality and empowerment.

Ecoturismo Y Empoderamiento: La Ecoinnovación De Las Mujeres Indígenas En América Latina, Kathleen Sinatra
Honors Theses
This thesis focuses on the role of indigenous women in relation to ecotourism efforts and ecoinnovation. Through an analysis of three case studies, I discuss the need to account for both indigenous people and gender when engaging in ecotourism efforts. I first engage in a literature review that develops the complex relationship between the identity factors of indigeneity and gender. I then look at a case study of the hotel Taselotzin in Cuetzalan del Progreso, Mexico in which a cooperative group of indigenous women founded a hotel. I then turn to the Kichwa community in Ecuador and the organization Amukishmi …

A Qualitative Analysis Of Translanguaging By Colombian Migrants In North Carolina, Scott Lamanna
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
This study examines the usefulness of the theoretical construct of translanguaging in analyzing the linguistic production of twenty-four Colombians (originally from Bogotá) residing in the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina. Translanguaging maintains that bilinguals and multilinguals have a single linguistic repertoire consisting of features traditionally associated with different named languages (English, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, etc.), and that they freely select from among these features according to their communicative needs in specific contexts. In terms of named languages, participants utilized varying amounts of English during sociolinguistic interviews conducted primarily in Spanish by the investigator. The study presents a qualitative analysis …

El Neocolonialismo: La Influencia Imperialista Del Turismo En Honduras, Kelsey Brodie
Honors Theses
This thesis explores the role of neocolonialism and imperialist forces in the development of Honduras throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. The United States was responsible for a series of coup d’états throughout the 20th century, paving the way for conformation to western and American ideals. These included several in Honduras, opening the doors to the banana farming industry which took control of the nation for decades. Later, the Honduran economy saw a shift from agriculture to tourism to comply with the new ideals of imperialist nations. While tourism continues to be a growing part of the economy, it has …

El Agroturismo: La Clave Para El Futuro Sostenible De España, Emma Mahony
Honors Theses
This thesis explores the possibilities of agritourism in the pursuit of sustainable tourism in Spain. It criticizes the dominant model of sun-and-beach tourism and endorses agritourism as a sustainable alternative. Agritourism is a field of rural tourism that encourages tourist engagement in agricultural activities as a means of diversifying the economy and fostering cultural competency. Through an analysis of case studies of farm stays, enotourism, olive oil tourism, and cheese tourism throughout Spain, this paper examines the social and economic benefits that agritourism extends to the provider, the tourist, the host community, and the environment. It concludes by emphasizing that, …

La Reivindicación De La Cultura Judía En España A Través Del Turismo Sostenible, Hannah Weeks
Honors Theses
This thesis explores the Sustainable Development Goals created by the United Nations and the role that culture plays in the development of sustainable practices. Inspired by personal experiences, minority groups, primarily the Jewish population of Spain, require the implementation of sustainable tourism in order to have their legacies remembered in the present day, as well as their culture understood by travelers. In Seville, Spain, traditional tours do not emphasize the importance of the Jewish culture and its influence on the overall Spanish culture, depriving visitors of a complete overview of their destination’s development and accomplishments. Through the investigation of various …

Inés Del Alma Mía (Inés Of My Soul) Or How To Retrain The Chronicle, Chris Schulenburg
Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature
Among the multitude of lettered discourses employed to communicate Latin America’s marvels during the conquest, the chronicle constituted a particularly effective option. That is, its necessary framing for a Spanish or Portuguese courtly audience with heterogeneous contents mixing history and fiction allowed for a text that served to validate personal service to the crown. Part and parcel of these chronicles’ objectives, of course, consisted of portraying an indigenous population supposedly anxious to accept the work load of the encomienda as well as the Catholic conversions that accompanied this legislated slavery. Moreover, this Eurocentric perspective also boasted an almost completely masculine …
