From Both Sides Now: Reflections On Recent Methodological Trends In The Study Of Islam, Aaron W. Hughes Prof
Abdou Filali-Ansary Occasional Paper Series
This is a set of critical reflections on the place and role of ‘theory and method’ within the context of the study of Islam, especially (but not solely) as carried out in the field of religious studies, over the course of roughly the last twenty years. The goal here is not to criticise, but instead to come at this issue of ‘theory and method’ in the study of Islam from a more mature perspective. At present in the field there is a diverse set of attempts to imagine ‘Islam’, not as a theological category that must be defended, but as …

Sources Of Income For Women In Islam, Abdulfattah Al-Samman
Sources Of Income For Women In Islam, Abdulfattah Al-Samman
Jordan Journal of Applied Science-Humanities Series
According to some studies, feminizing poverty has now become a usual attitude in Islamic societies with rates exceeding 70%, which completely contradicts with the essence of Sharia that allocates women thirty sources of income in addition to equaling them with men in terms of being financially independent, and to be taken care of in all their circumstances.
If a woman is wealthy, sharia maintains her money and gives her freedom to spend it the way she desires, and in the Muslim community there is always a breadwinner who is responsible for all her needs, protecting her honor, and providing her …

Giving Zakat In Building Mosques And Schools Equipment: Comparative Study, Abdelhamid Ben Ali
An-Najah University Journal for Research - B (Humanities)
This study centered on the rule of the Islamic Sharia in the disbursement of alms giving income to the building of mosques and schools. The problem of this study stems from the point view of Islamic law, which has set alms giving in only eight categories. Moreover, if it said that alms giving is permissible in all public interest, it will cancel the benefit of determining of these alms of giving. There are disquieting questions such as: What if people fail to volunteer in mosques and schools? This study came to achieve a set of objectives, such as: The most …

(Dis)Locating Meaning: Toward A Hermeneutical Response In Education To Religiously Inspired Extremism, Farid Panjwani
(Dis)Locating Meaning: Toward A Hermeneutical Response In Education To Religiously Inspired Extremism, Farid Panjwani
Institute for Educational Development, Karachi
A key epistemological assumption in the ideologies of many of the groups termed extremist is that there is an unmediated access to a Divine Will. Driven by this assumption, and facilitated by several other factors, a range of coercive actions (including violence) to force others into submission to the perceived Will of God are seen as justified by some of these groups. A consideration of how religion is discussed in various contexts, from seminaries and schools to media and policy discourses, shows that this assumption about unmediated access to Divine Will is widely shared and that most children grow up …

The Fall And Rise Of Bengali Muslim Conciousness: Conceptualising The Identity Of The Bangla Universal, Habib Khan
The Fall And Rise Of Bengali Muslim Conciousness: Conceptualising The Identity Of The Bangla Universal, Habib Khan
Theses and Dissertations
The emergence of modern-nation states saw the end of the empirical era of exploitation and exercise of inherent racist tendencies towards the 'other'. However, the effect of that colonial system is still ever-present in the creation and governance of these newly independent states. While every new state aims to be 'modern', they adopt the international legal framework of the West as their own - a system they had initially wanted to escape. The concept of Muslim universality in the form of the ummah should have freed Pakistan from the shackles of its former colonial masters. Instead, this phenomenon was replaced …

Interpretatio Islamica And The Unraveling Of The Ancient Sabian Mysteries, Maurice Hines
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis makes some bold claims about the identity of the Qur’anic Sabians (Ṣābi’ūn) and their symbiotic relationship with various Near Eastern religions including Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Thrice mentioned in the Qur’an, they clung to an ancient religion - or perhaps the most ancient – that spanned the entire Eastern hemisphere and provided not only the structural foundations of human civilizations, but also their religious, philosophical, and intellectual foundations. However, their creed had undergone a variety of changes over time including a shift in the conception of God from a personal to a transcendent deity, the worship …

حقيقة الاستحسان عند الحنفية The Reality Of The Istihsan According To Al Hanafia School, Harith Mohammed Issa
Jordan Journal of Islamic Studies
Al Hanafia School used the Istihsan principle until they became famous for it, where Abu Hanifa was incomparable with it. Istihsan in all its forms is nothing but an alteration of a general rule, texts, an analogy, or an extracted origin for legal evidence that requires modification. This act of Istihsan was not an opinion, preference, self-distance, or derogation of legal evidence, rather the Istihsan was based on evidence that may be a hidden analogy, text, consensus, necessity, custom, interest, or a general jurisprudential rule.

Spiritual guidance has recently received much attention at the level of medical research and scientific studies and has been used much at the level of applied and realistic treatments in hospitals and medical centers. This kind of therapy was not strange to Islamic medicine, but it was a cornerstone and a prominent feature in medicine. Ibn Al-Qayem made significant contributions related to spiritual guidance as he shed light in his book The Prophetic Medicine on spiritual recovery and its elements, and he set rules and guidelines for spiritual therapy. His writings on spiritual guidance and its sources played a significant …

حجج المنتقدين لمتون أحاديث في الصحيحين ومناقشتها Arguments Of The Critics Of Texts Of Some Ahadith Of Al_Sahihayin And Their Discussion, Sharaf Al-Qudah
Jordan Journal of Islamic Studies
There have been many writings in our time criticizing the ahadith al-Sahihayn, which are the two soundest books of the Prophetic hadith. Most of these criticisms focus on the criticism of the text. Arguments of those who weaken the ahadith are many, and some writings discuss such criticisms; however, they focus on Sanad (i.e., chains of hadith narrators), where many of them discuss the criticism of a particular hadith. To the best of my knowledge, I have not come across either a book or a research paper concerned with gathering and discussing all arguments of the critics of the text. …
