Conscience As Primordial Moral Awareness In Gaudium Et Spes And Veritatis Splendor, Tom Ryan Dec 2010

Conscience As Primordial Moral Awareness In Gaudium Et Spes And Veritatis Splendor, Tom Ryan

Tom Ryan

Theological discussion on conscience in the light of recent Church documents has tended to focus predominantly on its relationship to the truth and specifically as moral judgment in a particular situation. However, conscience has a more foundational sense. I argue that, in Gaudium et Spes and Veritatis Splendor, conscience understood as primordial moral awareness is presented in the setting of four epistemological processes which mediate the intuitive and affective appreciation of value, namely through a) participation in a divine-human dialogical relationship of love, b) participation as recognition of the true self, c) participation as collaboration in divine providence and wisdom …

Wellness, Health, And Salvation : About The Religious Dimension Of Contemporary Body-Mindedness, Christoffer H. Grundmann Dec 2010

Wellness, Health, And Salvation : About The Religious Dimension Of Contemporary Body-Mindedness, Christoffer H. Grundmann

Christoffer H. Grundmann

Alluding to the enormous investments in wellness, health, and anti-aging by affluent US society today the article focuses on the anthropological and religious implications of this phenomenon by stating that the pursuit of such caring for the body has superseded the quest for salvation. The first section provides a historical background analysis of how the contemporary semi-religious bodymindedness came about, while the second part analyses wellness, health, and salvation from a phenomenological point of view. It shows that any body image which does not address human frailty turns into something utterly inhumane while a religiously informed anthropology, in contrast, not …

From Luke To John: Lazarus, Mary, And Martha In The Fourth Gospel, Keith L. Yoder Dec 2010

From Luke To John: Lazarus, Mary, And Martha In The Fourth Gospel, Keith L. Yoder

Keith L. Yoder

Here I examine John’s Raising of Lazarus and Anointing of Jesus texts and explore literary parallels with Luke’s Lazarus and Mary/Martha texts. I show first that there is a significant and orderly array of such parallels between the Luke and John texts, constituting strong evidence of inter-textual influence between Luke and John. I then show that this relationship is literary rather than oral, and that the literary dependence flows from Luke to John. This paper was not accepted for presentation by the panel moderator.
NOTE of 2 July 2017: I will be revising this essay this year to take …

Effeminacy In The Shadow Of Empire: The Politics Of Transgressive Gender In Josephus's Bellum Judaicum, Jason Von Ehrenkrook Dec 2010

Effeminacy In The Shadow Of Empire: The Politics Of Transgressive Gender In Josephus's Bellum Judaicum, Jason Von Ehrenkrook

Jason von Ehrenkrook

[...]it is now widely agreed that gender in antiquity was viewed, at least from the perspective of the surviving male elite literary sources (an important qualification indeed!), through a single-gender, and not surprisingly androcentric, conceptual framework.6 Virginia Burras 's recent assessment of the current state of scholarship is worth noting in this regard: [...]I have argued that Josephus's invective against John and his rebel cohort should be read within a wider Roman discourse on trasgressive gender, both the tendency in political invective to cast tyrants as effeminate objects of anal penetration, as well as the gendered power structures integral to …

You Make All Things New, Scott R. Paeth Dec 2010

You Make All Things New, Scott R. Paeth

Scott R. Paeth

This article examines the way in which the theology of Jonathan Edwards can contrib- ute to the construction of a Christian approach to ecological ethics that maintains crucial elements of the Christian theological tradition. By way of comparison, the article begins with an examination of the work of Rosemary Radford Ruether, whose approach to dealing with the ecological implications of the Christian tradition diverges sharply from the perspective offered by Edwards, and provides a useful contrast to his approach. The article then turns to an extensive discussion of Edwards’ view of nature and the theology of creation, particularly the relationship …

The Implications Of Unbelief: Tracing The Emergence Of Distinctively ShiʿI Notions Regarding The Food And Impurity Of Non-Muslims, David M. Freidenreich Dec 2010

The Implications Of Unbelief: Tracing The Emergence Of Distinctively ShiʿI Notions Regarding The Food And Impurity Of Non-Muslims, David M. Freidenreich

David M. Freidenreich

The distinctively Shiʿi conception of non-Muslims as bearers of a contagious form of impurity emerges gradually, reaching its classical form only in the 5th/11th century. Contrary to common scholarly presumptions, Q. 9.28 does not constitute the point of origin for this conception but rather serves as retroactive justification for its validity. This essay utilizes ḥadīth collections and works of law from the 2nd/8th through 5th/11th centuries to trace the emergence of Shiʿi notions regarding the impurity of non-Muslims and the parallel emergence of distinctively Shiʿi norms regarding the meat of animals slaughtered by non-Muslims. It concludes by suggesting that the …
