Religious Metaphor And Cross-Cultural Communication: Transforming National And International Identities, Joseph E. Richardson
Religious Metaphor And Cross-Cultural Communication: Transforming National And International Identities, Joseph E. Richardson
BYU Studies Quarterly
The challenges of intercultural communication multiply in religious discourse, with its objective of translating abstract ideas into cultures and languages with sufficient power to transform individual, ethnic, and regional identities and to build cohesive communities of faith. Metaphor plays a primary role in this transformative communication. A powerful tool to abbreviate and facilitate communication, metaphor enables individuals to transmit abstract ideas quickly, efficiently, and memorably. Metaphor is not just a tool for efficient communication; it also guides thought, extends ideas, and influences behavior. Daily language is full of metaphor, which affects our beliefs and faith and, consequently, our actions. As …
Confessing History: Explorations In Christian Faith And The Historian's Perspective, Rachel Cope, John Fea, Jay Green, Eric Miller
Confessing History: Explorations In Christian Faith And The Historian's Perspective, Rachel Cope, John Fea, Jay Green, Eric Miller
BYU Studies Quarterly
George Marsden's 1994 book The Soul of the American University ended rather unusually for an academic work--this well-respected historian suggested that religious faith should have a place in the academy. Such a bold assertion sparked a number of heated discussions within and without the intellectual world. Three years later, Marsden responded again to his critics by producing a volume that explored this topic, which he aptly titled The Outrageous Idea of Christian Scholarship. As a result of this book, additional conversations ensued in which Christian and non-Christian scholars grappled with Marsden's proposition. More recently, the contributors to the edited volume …
Faith, Spirituality, And Sustainability, C. William Pollard
Faith, Spirituality, And Sustainability, C. William Pollard
C. William Pollard Papers
This speech was delivered at the University of Arkansas's Tyson Center for Faith and Spirituality in the Workplace (Fayetteville, AR). In it Pollard considers the 2008 financial crisis, which he believes requires business leaders to adopt new models of leadership and new ways of educating future managers. Such measures will ensure that corporate firms will always consider profit alongside the more significant goal of forming moral character.

The Satanic Phenomenon: Medieval Representations Of Satan, Morgan A. Matos
The Satanic Phenomenon: Medieval Representations Of Satan, Morgan A. Matos
Master of Liberal Studies Theses
This project deals with the one and only character of Satan, revealing him through the eyes of the medieval world. The ever-evolving, interconnectedness of culture, religion, and superstition make for a truly unique theatrical experience in the middle ages. With limited understanding and access to scripture, medieval Christians generated a blended belief system, in order to make sense of the metaphysical world, which manifests itself in medieval drama‟s representations of Satan. While the medieval character of Satan upholds many of the Church‟s teachings about his nature and purpose, he takes on a new persona when left to the dramatic interpretation …

Business As A Calling Of God (Wheaton, Il), C. William Pollard
C. William Pollard Papers
Speaking on the occasion of College Church's (Wheaton, IL) 150th anniversary, Pollard posits whether God and profit can actually mix. He answers by arguing that business is as much a calling from God as any other field of work, but that the proper integration of faith and business requires servant-like leadership.

John Wesley‟S Liturgical Revision: A Pattern For Reshaping Worship For Post-Christian America, Lawrence A. Lacher
John Wesley‟S Liturgical Revision: A Pattern For Reshaping Worship For Post-Christian America, Lawrence A. Lacher
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
Lacher, Lawrence A. “John Wesley‟s Liturgical Revision: A Pattern for Reshaping Worship for Post-Christian America.” Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2011. 316 pp.
This project seeks to find a solution to the current malformation of Christian Worship in the American church through re-examining John Wesley‟s Sunday Service for Methodists in North America (1784) in order to extract the underlying pattern. That pattern is then proposed as a paradigm that allows for the contextualization of worship while retaining its historic shape, function and purpose.
John Wesley‟s liturgical advices are examined for several reasons. Since the writer is interested in helping those who …
Redemptive Leadership, C. William Pollard
Redemptive Leadership, C. William Pollard
C. William Pollard Papers
Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary hosted its "Salting the Workplace - How?" seminar in 2011. For his speech at the workshop, Pollard chose the topic of redemptive leadership, which he understands as being fundamentally concerned with the development of the human person. This type of leadership can never be divorced from the ultimate questions, i.e. those pertaining to God and faith.

Business As A Calling Of God (Boston), C. William Pollard
Business As A Calling Of God (Boston), C. William Pollard
C. William Pollard Papers
Pollard addressed the 2011 Boston Business Breakfast alongside Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary's David Gill. In his address, he spoke of how the 2008-2009 financial collapse had caused many to ask whether businesses could make money while also being moral communities. For Pollard, this is possible only if leaders focus first on people rather than profit, a reorientation of priority which will require a transformation in how businesses are run and how future corporate managers are educated.
Reasonable Conversions: Susanna Rowan's Mentoria And Conversion Narratives For Young Readers, Karen Roggenkamp
Reasonable Conversions: Susanna Rowan's Mentoria And Conversion Narratives For Young Readers, Karen Roggenkamp
Faculty Publications
Though not well known, Rowson's Mentoria-a curious conglomeration of thematically-related pieces from multiple genres, including the essay, epistolary novel, conduct book, and fairy tale-offers particularly fertile ground for thinking about the nexus between eighteenth-century didactic books and earlier works for young readers.2 At the heart of Mentoria is a series of letters describing girls who yield, with dire and frequently deadly consequences, to the passionate pleas of male suitors.3 Fallen women populate Rowson's world, and scholars have traditionally read Mentoria within the familiar bounds of the eighteenth-century seduction novel.4 However, Rowson's creation transforms the older tradition of didactic, child-centered conversion …
Solitude And Journey: Two Central Themes In The Spirituality Of John Henry Newman, Ono Ekeh
Solitude And Journey: Two Central Themes In The Spirituality Of John Henry Newman, Ono Ekeh
Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications
John Henry Newman is widely known for his ideas on doctrinal development, education, conscience, and his reflections on faith and reason. However, it is important to remember that, among the many hats Newman wore, he was mostly a preacher and spiritual director. So in his role as a preacher, pastor, and spiritual leader, did he have a distinct spirituality? If so, what features or ideas would define Newman's spirituality? This paper will explore two prominent and pervasive themes in his spirituality looking primarily at his Parochial and Plain Sermons from his Anglican period and also at some of his Catholic …
Theology Of Confessionist Dialogue: A Theology Of Religions In The Religious Situation In Korea, Young Seok Song
Theology Of Confessionist Dialogue: A Theology Of Religions In The Religious Situation In Korea, Young Seok Song
ATS Dissertations
This dissertation constructs a new theology of religions, naming it a confessionist dialogue. By examining the traditional and contemporary religious atmosphere of Korea, I demonstrate how Korean Christians have often had an anti-relational attitude toward other religions, which caused religious conflicts and created anti-social expression in Korea. I also show that only a few religious pluralists have engaged in an active dialogue with other religions in Korea. By survey research, I found that the majority of Korean Christians have acknowledged the necessity of relationship with other religions, but they have a fear of religious pluralism, which makes them hesitant to …
Risen Apes And Fallen Angels: The New Museology Of Human Origins, Stephen Asma
Risen Apes And Fallen Angels: The New Museology Of Human Origins, Stephen Asma
Stephen T Asma
There has been a little explosion of "origin" exhibitions in the past few years. The recent bicentennial of Darwin's birth, in 2009, ushered in a bevy of traveling exhibitions and events. Grandscale permanent exhibitions have recently opened at the American Museum of Natural History (the Spitzer Hall of Human Origins) in New York, and the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History (the David H. Koch Hall of Human Origins) in Washington, D.C. A new museology is afoot, and some of the recent changes are worth tracking. And let's not forget the recently opened Creation Museum in Petersburg, Kentucky. Even in …
Enlightened Monks: The German Benedictines 1740-1803, Ulrich Lehner
Enlightened Monks: The German Benedictines 1740-1803, Ulrich Lehner
Ulrich L. Lehner
Enlightened Monks investigates the social, cultural, philosophical, and theological challenges the German Benedictines had to face between 1740 and 1803, and how the Enlightenment process influenced the self-understanding and lifestyle of these religious communities. It had an impact on their forms of communication, their transfer of knowledge, their relationships to worldly authorities and to the academic world, and also their theology and philosophy. The multifaceted achievements of enlightened monks, which included a strong belief in individual freedom, tolerance, human rights, and non-violence, show that monasticism was on the way to becoming fully integrated into the Enlightenment. Ulrich L. Lehner refutes …

Research has shown that one effective means of improving leader effectiveness in business and education is coaching. Book Review: Practical Theology: An Introduction By Richard R. Osmer And Studying Christian Spirituality By David Perrin, Glenn J. Morrison
Book Review: Practical Theology: An Introduction By Richard R. Osmer And Studying Christian Spirituality By David Perrin, Glenn J. Morrison
Theology Papers and Journal Articles
The future of Christianity is a concern at the heart of being and faith. In the passivity of encountering people’s faces, dreams and hopes, we can be exposed to feelings of loneliness, failure, suffering, outrage and brokenness. And it is here, in the face of our neighbour, that we begin to appreciate the depth of the Church. The future of Christianity may remain secret, yet the extent to which we journey into another’s life, offer a welcome and benediction of peace, gives hope to envision a messianic era and a future world of ethics, prayer and love. And it is …
Highway Religion: Truckstop Chapels, Evangelism, And Lived Religion On The Road, David Brett Greenberg
Highway Religion: Truckstop Chapels, Evangelism, And Lived Religion On The Road, David Brett Greenberg
Honors Papers
This study examines manifestations of Christian faith found along the highways of the United States, particularly in the form of truckstop chapels. Through ethnographic research and social-historical/theoretical analysis, this study seeks to explore the ways in which Evangelical Christianity, when combined with certain cultural and social particulars of the trucking profession, may be markedly re-contextualized, giving rise to distinctive approaches to ministry, worship, and religious life.
By identifying widespread and often codified specializations among trucking ministries and examining the ways in which the trucking-specific evangelism of such ministries may be applied and lived out by individual drivers of faith, this …
