Portland's Lost Chinatown, Artthew H. Ng
Portland's Lost Chinatown, Artthew H. Ng
University Honors Theses
Portland's Chinatown is one of the oldest North American urban Chinatowns, but is largely unexplored in the literature. It is currently a Chinatown in name only, missing Chinese residential buildings as well as popular Chinese businesses. This article explores the mystery of Portland Chinatown's birth and death, analyzing its history with a sociological lens. It had a similar lifespan to other Chinatowns in the US. However, Portland's Old Chinatown was unique, as unlike an ethnic enclave, it did not have clearly defined boundaries, growing to cover seventy city blocks at its peak. Therefore, when urban renewal started taking place in …
Control, Allegiance, And Shame In Male Qing Dynasty Hairstyles, Carolle Pinkerton
Control, Allegiance, And Shame In Male Qing Dynasty Hairstyles, Carolle Pinkerton
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis is about the politicization of hairstyles in imperial China. They indicated conformity with social norms, or rebellion against them. This was especially true under the country’s last dynasty. The Manchu conquerors imposed their own hairstyle, the queue, on their Han Chinese subjects to make their rule palpable to China’s illiterate millions. “Hair martyrs” who refused to accept this “barbarous” hairstyle were ruthlessly eliminated. The Manchus had feared assimilation into the much larger Han population. But the introduction of one uniform male hair style for both Manchus and Han blurred the lines between the two groups. In this way …
Re-Envisioning Caribbean Costa Rica: Chinese-West Indian Interaction In Limón During The Late Nineteenth And Early Twentieth Centuries, Benjamin N. Narváez
Re-Envisioning Caribbean Costa Rica: Chinese-West Indian Interaction In Limón During The Late Nineteenth And Early Twentieth Centuries, Benjamin N. Narváez
History Publications
While West Indians constituted a much larger immigrant group in the port of Limón, Costa Rica and its environs, Chinese also migrated there during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In hopes of maintaining their culture and in response to the prejudice they faced, both groups formed their own tightknit transnational subcommunities. Nevertheless, they also interacted with each other. These interactions ranged from tension and conflict on the one hand, to routine, peaceful interaction and even collaboration on the other. In particular, class differences and the marginalization these groups experienced combined to produce this complex relationship. Tension and conflict …
The Chinese In California: Archaeology And Railroads At The Turn Of The Century, Evelyn Hildebrand
The Chinese In California: Archaeology And Railroads At The Turn Of The Century, Evelyn Hildebrand
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Research on Chinese sites in California have focused on ethnicity, ethnic relations, and the material expression of ethnicity all of which are key issues in overseas Chinese archaeology. Chinatown sites produced data that helped define Chinese culture and experience in historical California. One railroad construction work camp site identified in 2016 located in the Cajon Pass in the late 1800’s offers the potential for insight into the lives of the workers. Chinese occupation in San Bernardino is not well understood, and the site may offer information on the culture, traditions, and integrations of the workers. Thousands of Chinese men left …

A Comparative Analysis Of Mixed Race Marriage In Fiji And The United States, Rachel Kung
A Comparative Analysis Of Mixed Race Marriage In Fiji And The United States, Rachel Kung
Honors Theses
In Fiji it is imperative to belong to group, particularly a racial/ethnic group because of a history of ethnic pluralism under British colonialism. Making connections and forming relationships is all determined by one’s racial/ethnic group. Due to this, belonging to two groups, especially if those two distinct races do not get along, such as indigenous Fijians and Indo‐Fijians, it becomes increasingly difficult to create a system of social networks. Fijians also tend to define ethnicity in terms of behavior rather than simply looking at one’s biology. If one cannot speak the native language of that particular race, he or she …
The Unwanted Immigrant, Frank A. Bozich Iii
The Unwanted Immigrant, Frank A. Bozich Iii
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
The social and religious differences between Chinese migrants and Americans of European descent played a large role in the exploitation of the Chinese. Ultimately, nativism became ingrained in Californian society as Irish Americans began to view Chinese as a threat to their economic success and violence toward Chinese became more common due to the Californian government’s support of anti-Chinese and nativist legislation.

A Comparative Study Of Chinese And Mexican Immigrants' Economic Incorporation In The United States, Miao Chunyu
A Comparative Study Of Chinese And Mexican Immigrants' Economic Incorporation In The United States, Miao Chunyu
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This dissertation research is a comparative study of the economic incorporation of the unskilled Chinese and Mexican immigrants in the United States. This comparative approach is justified by the fact that these two groups share striking similarities in human capital, social networks, and immigrant flow patterns, whereas they also differ significantly in their migration cost, transnational practice, and reception in the U.S. labor market. This research investigates three specific aspects of their labor market experience: participation in self-employment, job transition, and earnings growth. Essentially I hope to find out whether these immigrants can achieve economic mobility over time and in …
Non-Delinquency Among American-Chinese Youth : A Pilot Study, Conrad Foo Mar
Non-Delinquency Among American-Chinese Youth : A Pilot Study, Conrad Foo Mar
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
It was the purpose of this study: (1) to examine the obstacles in research in the uniquely difficult area of sampling of the American-Chinese population and (2) to find out what descriptive approaches do not produce resistance, hopefully to suggest future research in this area and (3) to obtain historical and descriptive data which might offer, from a sample of both delinquent and non-delinquent American-Chinese youth, some clues to the rehabilitation of youthful offenders. Specifically, this was basically an attempt to obtain an available sample of both delinquent and non-delinquent American-Chinese youth for the purpose of identifying some of the …
