Thinking Outside The Master’S House: New Knowledge Movements And The Emergence Of Academic Disciplines, Mikaila Arthur

This paper proposes a theoretical framework for understanding emergent disciplines as knowledge-focused social movement phenomena called New Knowledge Movements, or NKMs. The proposed theoretical framework is developed through a synthesis of new social movement theory and Frickel and Gross's Scientific/Intellectual Movements (SIMs) model. In contrast to the SIMs model, this paper argues that many new disciplines emerge through contentious collective action on the part of political and intellectual outsiders rather than through the action of intellectual elites. The framework is examined through historical narratives of two disciplines, women's studies and Asian American studies, in the USA. This framework will be …

Looking nostalgically at her family’s history as Okinawan sugar cane plantation workers on the Big Island of Hawaii, she ultimately finds herself through mediated pop images of paradise and in the very real space of a Midwestern Vietnamese nail salon. Chinese American Literature since the 1850s traces the origins and development of the extensive and largely neglected body of literature written in English and in Chinese, assessing its themes and style and placing it in a broad social and historical context. This volume, shows how change and continuity in the Chinese American experience are reflected in the writings of immigrants from China and their descendants.

The article reports on social change in China. The transition from a centrally planned economy to a free market has set off an economic explosion and generated tremendous prosperity. According to the author, there are no signs of political liberalization in China and the power of the National People's Congress has increased significantly. The article discusses widespread corruption in China and the gulf between the prosperity of urban centers and the poverty of rural areas.
