Moments Of Meeting: 'Intersubjective Encounters' And ‘Emancipatory’ Experiences Of Individuals With (Intellectual) Disabilities In Inclusive Musical Contexts, Caroline Blumer

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The purpose of this study was to explore an intersubjective framework to better understand the relational aspects of two inclusive musical programs in London, ON. I focused on mutual recognition moments, called moments of meeting (MoM), researching how they are formed and manifested while music is shared, created, or experienced within these two environments. Approaching such programs as potentially intersubjective spaces, this study investigated the impact of MoM and intersubjective experiences on the participation of individuals with Intellectual Disabilities (ID) in music making as well as on their perceptions of themselves as subjects. Equally significant, this study looked at emerging …

Prokofiev And The Soviet Dilemma: Censorship, Autonomy, And The Piano Transcriptions, Connor O'Kane

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This monograph presents a study of Sergei Prokofiev’s piano transcriptions connected with the ballets Romeo and Juliet (1935-36) and Cinderella (1940-44). It is primarily concerned with the ways in which Prokofiev’s circumstances as an artist working in the Soviet Union inhibited his creative freedom, particularly with respect to his late ballets, and how these circumstances motivated him to compose piano transcriptions as an alternate outlet for his work. To fully explore this idea, this thesis analyzes four particular transcriptions and the ways in which they are musically distinct from their ballet counterparts. Chapter 1 focuses on Prokofiev’s 1936 return to …

A Narrative Approach To The Barcarolles For Solo Piano By Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924), Matthew T. Pope

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) was one of the most influential composers in France at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries. Through his compositions and roles as professor, and later, director of the Paris Conservatoire, Fauré was instrumental in the development of twentieth-century French music; shaping “the core of the first wave of French composers to be wholly ‘twentieth-century’” (Duchen, 2000).

Fauré’s compositions span 121 opuses and his works for voice and chamber ensemble are well known amongst singers and chamber musicians alike. However, his name and works for solo piano are unfamiliar amongst performing pianists. This …

Re-Imagining Brazilian Portuguese Ipa: A Practical Guide Utilizing Paulo Maron’S New Opera Lampião, Jorge Luiz Alves Trabanco Filho Apr 2021

Re-Imagining Brazilian Portuguese Ipa: A Practical Guide Utilizing Paulo Maron’S New Opera Lampião, Jorge Luiz Alves Trabanco Filho

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

How often have North American singers considered singing art songs or opera arias in Brazilian Portuguese? How many Brazilian Opera composers do voice students and faculty outside of Brazil know? The lack of language familiarity of Brazilian Portuguese is a barrier to Brazilian vocal music’s accessibility and performance. And the challenging learning curve may contribute to the lack of interest non-native speakers may have toward Brazilian classical music. To help address this problem, the author decided to promote the accessibility of the Brazilian Portuguese repertoire of vocal music by re-imagining/simplifying sections of the Brazilian Portuguese IPA table. This simplified table …

Impressions pour caisse claire et deux toms (1999) by French percussionist Nicolas Martynciow is an extremely challenging multi-movement composition for the snare drum. At over eleven-minutes long, Impressions is one of the longest and most technically demanding works for the solo snare drummer. This composition places significant emphasis on the timbral capabilities of the snare drum and features a wide array of distinct sounds that are generated using both standard and extended techniques. This work also combines stylistic characteristics of rudimental and orchestral snare drum repertoires, as well as several popular music genres including jazz, bebop, soca. It has …

The Integration Of The Style Hongrois Into Brahms’S Musical Language In His Chamber Works, Raymond D. Truong

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The style hongrois is a musical language that Western European composers used to evoke the style of the Hungarian music performed by Romani musicians. This monograph explores the use of the style hongrois in the chamber works of Johannes Brahms. He uses this style often, to the point where it is integrated into his musical language. To understand where this language came from, this monograph provides a historical context of Hungary (the country of origin), the Roma who resided there and migrated westwards, and their musicians.

The second part of this monograph explores the integration of the style hongrois into …

See It And Believe It: An Investigation Into Singers' Imagery Use, Brianna Desantis Nov 2020

See It And Believe It: An Investigation Into Singers' Imagery Use, Brianna Desantis

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Sport and dance psychology researchers have shown, time and again, how imagery improves performance in their respective fields. In singing, imagery has a long history in the bel canto (beautiful singing) tradition but it is more linked to using metaphor and simile as teaching aids rather than a mental practice technique to improve performance. Because of this, imagery in singing is even broader than imagery in athletics or dance. Moreover, imagery in singing psychology has not been as thoroughly examined in an empirical setting, especially not from a sport and dance psychology perspective.

This monograph aims to outline the term …

The Search For Canadian Art Song: Developing The Framework For A Database Of Art Song By Canadian Composers, Leanne Vida Sep 2020

The Search For Canadian Art Song: Developing The Framework For A Database Of Art Song By Canadian Composers, Leanne Vida

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Art song is a diverse, inclusive genre of music, as well as an important pedagogical tool for singers. It can be performed in the smallest of spaces, but it is also able to hold its own in the largest concert halls. It requires only a few musicians, making it an ideal choice for a concert or recital setting, and its poetic content describes virtually every aspect of life, in many languages, making it accessible to a broad audience. Many of its works require less physical maturity on the part of singers and require less rigorous technical ability than larger concert …

Understanding Viktor Ullmann Through His Liederbuch Des Hafis, Chad G. Louwerse Jun 2020

Understanding Viktor Ullmann Through His Liederbuch Des Hafis, Chad G. Louwerse

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The Liederbuch des Hafis is an enjoyable, complex, well-thought-out set of songs that feature a variety of musical styles, which are composed with a variety of compositional methods. The songs provide interesting and rewarding challenges to singer and pianist alike and are enjoyable to hear as an audience member. They are important because they are great examples of Viktor Ullmann’s skill as a song composer, and they also have great potential for concert programming as each song is distinct, and the set contrasts well with other repertoire. This is also an excellent set of songs for bass-baritones, who lack a …

Forward And Up: An Exploration Of Implementations Of The Alexander Technique In Post-Secondary Music Institutions, Mei Lee

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Music performance is a psychophysical affair. Like athletes, musicians need to be physically, mentally, and emotionally fit in order to meet the demands and challenges of training and performing. For over half a century, post-secondary music institutions have been utilizing the Alexander Technique to address young musicians’ psychophysical coordination and playing-related challenges. This unique mind-body method teaches individuals how to move efficiently and carry out activities with freedom and ease by recognizing and changing counterproductive habits. It has noted beneficial effects on posture and coordination, pain relief, and stress management, and its relevance to music performance studies is endorsed by …

Creative Collaborations: The Songs/Poems Of Canadian Artists Leslie Uyeda And Lorna Crozier, Jennifer Cyr

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Composer Leslie Uyeda and poet Lorna Crozier inspire, create, and collaborate in real time. Uyeda and Crozier have an exceptional creative collaboration as they have collaborated on 9 song cycles in the past 12 years and the subject matter of much of their art can be seen as cultural reflections and critiques. This is evident in the song cycle The First Woman which speaks of the silencing of women’s voices through the tales of Lilith and Eve in the garden of Eden and the rape of Dinah, Jacob's daughter. To successfully collaborate on 9 song cycles is a feat in …

Musical Ekphrasis In Concert: Case Study Of Alexey Khevelev’S Chagall Vitraux, Natalia Skomorokhova Sep 2019

Musical Ekphrasis In Concert: Case Study Of Alexey Khevelev’S Chagall Vitraux, Natalia Skomorokhova

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Piano cycle Chagall Vitraux by Russian composer Alexey Khevelev was written in 1994, inspired by Mark Chagall’s stained-glass masterpiece Jerusalem Windows (1962). Khevelev’s work consists of twelve movements, each named after one of the twelve windows by Chagall, and could be analyzed as an ekphrastic composition. The term musical ekphrasis was introduced in the musicological discourse around two decades ago to describe compositions based on works from the sister arts. The aesthetic category of ekphrasis has existed for centuries and has its roots in Plato’s discussion of the Ideal Form and its consequent representations. As a musical phenomenon the concept …

This study explored the impact of adaptive methods and modalities in Art Song performance in connecting with adult audiences (aged 18 and older) as explored through a live performance of German Lieder. In addition, this study sought to contribute a qualitative experimental study of in-situ audience perception to an emerging field of practice and research regarding the innovative practices in Art Song performance (e.g. Art Song Theatre). The study was derived from a 2012 informal experiment by Professor Rena Sharon, a leading advocate of expanded Art Song performance practice and pedagogy. "I Need To Fight The Power, But I Need That New Ferrari": Conspicuous Consumption, New-School Hip-Hop And "The New Rock & Roll", Emmett H. Robinson Smith

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

2017 marked the year in which hip-hop officially became the most listened-to genre in the United States. This thesis explores hip-hop music’s rise to its now-hegemonic position within the music industry, seeking to provide insight into the increasingly popular sentiment that hip-hop is “the new rock & roll”. The “new-school” hip-hop artists of the last six years or so have also been the subject of widespread critical disdain, especially for their heightened degree of emphasis on conspicuous consumption. This study will track hip-hop’s ascent from the mid-1980s through to its current position as both a political vehicle and a commercial …

Contexts For Musical Modernism In Post-1945 Mexico: Federico Ibarra - A Case Study, Francisco Eduardo Barradas Galván

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This monograph examines the musical modernist era in Mexico between 1945 and the 1970s. It aims to provide a new understanding of the eclecticism achieved by Mexican composers during this era, using three different focal points. First, I examine the cultural and musical context of this period of Mexican music history. I scrutinize the major events, personalities, and projects that precipitated Mexican composers’ move away from government-promoted musical nationalism during this period toward an embrace of international trends. I then provide a case study through which to better understand this era, examining the early life, education, and formative influences of …

The Lieder Of Joseph Marx And The Italienisches Liederbuch, Caleb Mora Feb 2019

The Lieder Of Joseph Marx And The Italienisches Liederbuch, Caleb Mora

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Austrian composer, Joseph Marx (1882-1964) is a significant figure in German Lieder in the first quarter of the twentieth century. Despite his contribution to the genre with 158 songs, the music of Marx remains largely unexplored in scholarly writings as well as concert programming.

The early twentieth century was a complex political, social, and musical climate that introduced multiple opposing views on musical composition. Despite being a contemporary to Arnold Schoenberg, Edgard Varèse, and Henry Cowell, Marx’s harmonic language remained within the bounds of tonality and never made use of the twelve-tone, atonal, or progressive elements used by the avant-garde. …

The Art Songs Of Kyrylo Stetsenko: Ukrainian Lyric Diction Guide, Olena Bratishko Oct 2018

The Art Songs Of Kyrylo Stetsenko: Ukrainian Lyric Diction Guide, Olena Bratishko

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The genre of Ukrainian art song represents a significant body of work to be discovered. Yet, in the twenty-first century the Ukrainian art song repertoire still remains one of the less explored genres of the Eastern European music, mainly due to the political factors playing a significant role in the history of Ukraine.

The present monograph serves a purpose of a reference guide for singers interested in performing Ukrainian art song. A brief history of Ukrainian art song will explore the development of song as a vocal genre at a certain period in time: the importance of folk song tradition …

The Political Power Of Carlos Chávez And His Influence Upon Silvestre Revueltas And Blas Galindo, Yolanda Tapia Aug 2018

The Political Power Of Carlos Chávez And His Influence Upon Silvestre Revueltas And Blas Galindo, Yolanda Tapia

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This monograph examines the political power of Mexican composer Carlos Chávez (1899–1978) during the first half of the twentieth century in Mexico, and his influence upon the careers and lives of composers Silvestre Revueltas (1899–1940) and Blas Galindo (1910–1993). I show how Carlos Chávez acquired institutional power through various cultural organizations such as the Orquesta Sinfónica de México, the Conservatorio Nacional, Departamento de Bellas Artes, and the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes, and how his desire to bind music and culture with politics positioned him as the head of the cultural committee of Miguel Aleman’s presidential campaign of 1945. Chávez’s …

Toward A Pedagogical Guide To Argentine Art Song, Matthew B. Pauls Aug 2018

Toward A Pedagogical Guide To Argentine Art Song, Matthew B. Pauls

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Argentine art song is a branch of the art song genre that is virtually unknown to Canadian academics and performers. Although there are numerous composers who have contributed songs to this genre, these composers and their contributions to the body of art song repertoire remain virtually unknown. The illusion of their non-existence is perpetuated by a cycle of factors. Publishers, not interested in publishing a product for which there is limited interest, print very little Argentine music. The lack of musical scores makes it difficult for performers to program and record this music. Thus, very few people are exposed to …

Rachmaninoff's Piano Works And Diasporic Identity 1890-1945: Compositional Revision And Discourse, Renee Mackenzie Aug 2018

Rachmaninoff's Piano Works And Diasporic Identity 1890-1945: Compositional Revision And Discourse, Renee Mackenzie

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This monograph examines the post-exile, multi-version works of Sergei Rachmaninoff with a view to unravelling the sophisticated web of meanings and values attached to them. Compositional revision is an important and complex aspect of creating musical meaning. Considering revision offers an important perspective on the construction and circulation of meanings and discourses attending Rachmaninoff’s music.

While Rachmaninoff achieved international recognition during the 1890s as a distinctively Russian musician, I argue that Rachmaninoff’s return to certain compositions through revision played a crucial role in the creation of a narrative and set of tropes representing “Russian diaspora” following the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution. …

Teaching Prospective Verdi Baritones: A Repertoire-Based Approach, Andrew Rethazi May 2018

Teaching Prospective Verdi Baritones: A Repertoire-Based Approach, Andrew Rethazi

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The Verdi baritone is one of the most sought-after voice types in the professional operatic sphere due to its leading presence in the Verdi repertoire. However, there exists a gap in the published scholarship about the introduction of the repertoire to younger baritones as a means of teaching the style and performance practice while still in the shelter of the post-secondary environment. This introduction to the repertoire can be a valuable tool in training potential Verdi baritones. The research goals of this monograph are threefold: 1) to establish prerequisite criteria of technical proficiency for young baritones to begin limited study …

Teleology In César Franck's Prélude, Choral Et Fugue, Stephanie Gouin

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

César Franck’s Prélude, Choral et Fugue is a fine example of the composer’s mature style and contribution to musical form and language at the end of the nineteenth century. The use of a Baroque structure, such as the fugue, has a significant impact on the overall unfolding of this Romantic work. A teleological perspective will inform the analysis of the Fugue, which will constitute the core of the study. It will use concepts of design and purpose in order to explain the development of the piece as a whole, and the transformation of the musical language within the Fugue in …

The Copyright Board And Tribunals Process: Users In The Balance, Louis J. D'Alton Mar 2016

The Copyright Board And Tribunals Process: Users In The Balance, Louis J. D'Alton

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The wholesale adoption of copyright collective management as public policy tool has had an extraordinary impact on the information landscape. The unfettered expansion of collective rights organizations throughout the 20th century has resulted in increased social costs and a burgeoning bureaucracy surrounding the collective use of rights.

This thesis considers the role of copyright tribunals within that process, and more importantly within a critical historical frame. While some work has been done with respect to copyright tribunals and their role in the policy process, none of it has considered the tribunals within a critical frame. This thesis considers those …
