Brown Study An Original Musical Recording, Alan Clark
Brown Study An Original Musical Recording, Alan Clark
HIM 1990-2015
For a year and a spring semester, I have been in the works of a school music project. I set out to make a record of ten self-penned songs. Along the length of the project, I would discover musicians and recording artists. I notated my songs on a staff and recorded demos to assist players of drums, electric bass, French horn, and violin. I play guitar, percussion, synthesized instruments, and do all of the singing on Brown Study, the record's title. The technology used to create the songs include a Tascam 2488 (home digital recording device), computers, printers, cell phones …

Disciplinary identity is often at the core of our musical engagements, scholarly research and educational goals. Our schools, curricula, and pedagogy are repeatedly (and historically) shaped by how we (and others) view ourselves within the institution, the arts, and our culture. However, recent developments in communications, production, distribution, and consumption of music have drastically changed the way everyone engages with music. Have our educational objectives, goals, and identities evolved as well? We believe that at the nexus of these developments is the necessity to create a productive dialogue with other disciplines, both inside and outside of music, in order to …

Involve Me: Using The Orff Approach Within The Elementary Classroom, Amanda Long
Involve Me: Using The Orff Approach Within The Elementary Classroom, Amanda Long
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Musical independence, improvisation, and composition are important skills that teachers should include within an elementary music curriculum. The musical concepts that accompany these skills can be difficult for teachers to convey and for students to understand due to the difficulty and complexity of teaching musical independence. This study consists of a literature review pertaining to the history and development of the Orff Approach, application of Orff concepts to the creation of lesson plans and classroom activities, action research with elementary students, and conclusions. Three different lesson plans were created implementing Orff techniques specific to the following grade ranges: two-four, four-six, …

Virtue Ethics, Care Ethics, And "The Good Life Of Teaching", Marissa Silverman
Virtue Ethics, Care Ethics, And "The Good Life Of Teaching", Marissa Silverman
John J. Cali School of Music Scholarship and Creative Works
In "The Good Life of Teaching: An Ethics of Professional Practice," Chris Higgins (2011) reminds people that "self-interest and altruism, personal freedom and social roles, and practical wisdom and personhood" have been ancient philosophical topics that remain vitally important in the practice of contemporary teaching and learning. One of the most fundamental questions Higgins raises is this: "How do we reconcile self-regard and concern for others?" Higgins echoes John Dewey's concern for "balancing the distinctive capacity of an individual with his social service." In other words, and educationally speaking: What does it mean to live "the good life" as an …
Attributional Beliefs In Music Learning: 'Talent' Or Hard Work?, Brian Joseph Harris
Attributional Beliefs In Music Learning: 'Talent' Or Hard Work?, Brian Joseph Harris
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Attributional beliefs of three distinct groups regarding the sources of musical skill—hard work or innate/internal -- were explored through two separate studies. Subjects for the pilot study consisted of thirty-seven private university music majors compared with adult chancel choir members, while the thesis study compared the responses of thirty-four public university music majors with chancel choir members. All subjects responded to researcher-developed attributive questionnaires. The pilot study indicated that a majority had the same notion, that musical skill comes from hard work and innate ability, with no statistical difference between private university music majors and the adult non-majors, p < .9999, on the Freeman-Halton extension of Fisher’s. Differences were found in the thesis study, with the majority of public university music majors favoring hard work and the adult non-majors equally divided between the two choices, resulting in a statistically significant difference at p < .0016 on Freeman-Halton extension of Fisher’s.
Affective-Domain Occurrences Reported By Undergraduate Non-Music-Major Students In A Keyboard-Centered Course Incorporating The Nine National Standards For Music Education And A Methodology Based On Constructivist Principles: Patterns That Might Suggest Hypotheses About Cause-And-Effect Relationships, Gergana S. Argirova
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this study, data about occurrences in the affective domain of non-music-major subjects taking a keyboard-centered course that incorporates the nine National Standards for music education along with a methodology based on constructivist principles were collected. The problem of this study was to identify any patterns in those data that might suggest hypotheses about cause-and-effect relationships that might be tested later in quantitative studies with experimental design.
The instruction consisted of a keyboard-centered music education curriculum that encompassed the U.S. nine National Standards for music education along with a teaching methodology based on constructivist principles. This study was conducted in …
Interpretations Of Student Engagement In The Context Of The Orff Schulwerk Music Classroom At The Dubard School For Language Disorders, Anna Rebecca Bondurant Halliday
Interpretations Of Student Engagement In The Context Of The Orff Schulwerk Music Classroom At The Dubard School For Language Disorders, Anna Rebecca Bondurant Halliday
Dissertations
The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore the lived experiences of four students with language disorders within the context of their Orff Schulwerk music class at the DuBard School for Language Disorders. In addition, the observational insights of their classroom teachers and the practitioner researcher were compared with the responses of the students in order to determine any discrepancies between the child’s awareness of his or her musical engagement and that of the observer. Using data collected from interviews, stimulated recall (Dempsey, 2010), and student generated artwork (Freeman & Mathison, 2009), I explored the lived experiences of …

Metrical Transition And Resolution In The Music Of Blindside, Patrick Sallings
Metrical Transition And Resolution In The Music Of Blindside, Patrick Sallings
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Meter in rock cannot always be determined by the backbeat. I have adapted metrical analysis models developed by Harald Krebs and others to the music of the rock band Blindside to address the issue of identifying logical metrical schemes in a particular repertoire of rock music. Blindside's use of metrical dissonance necessitates expansion of the existing analytical models in that the meter in some of their songs is ambiguous at times, allowing for a period of transition from one metrical scheme to another. The ambiguity of the meter in songs such as "The Endings," combined with the message of the …

Johannes Brahms, Vierzehn Deutsche Volkslieder, Woo 34, Nos. 1-14, An Arrangement, Transcription And Pedagogical Rationale For Wind Band, Robert Logan Biles
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This document illustrates how specific educational objectives can be met in the wind band rehearsal through the selection, transcription, and arrangement of the Vierzehn Deutsche Volkslieder, WoO 34, Nos. 1-14 by Johannes Brahms. It further defines the pedagogical appropriateness of these works and their transcriptions by outlining the educational goals that they accomplish.
The resulting wind band transcriptions and arrangements, for use at the secondary and post-secondary levels, are presented in two formats. The first is a convertible transcription where each instrumental part contains transpositions of all of the original vocal parts making it adaptable for various combinations of instruments. …

A Model Of An Effective Approach To Studio Voice At The Undergraduate Level: The Vocal Method Of Dr. Raquel Cortina, Kathleen Gorman Westfall
Dissertations
In her forty years of teaching voice at the college level at the University of New Orleans, Dr. Raquel Cortina has developed a method and process of teaching that yields exemplary results in her students. This study will provide a detailed description of her methods, her process of teaching, and the way she communicates information to her students. It will also provide a model for teachers of classical voice at the undergraduate level. The aspects of her method included in this study are limited to breath and support, resonance, issues with register, articulation, and musicality. A context of Cortina’s methods …
A Pedagogical Guide And Argument For Using The Harmonic Series In Teaching Beginning And Intermediate Level Horn Students, Patrick James Richards
A Pedagogical Guide And Argument For Using The Harmonic Series In Teaching Beginning And Intermediate Level Horn Students, Patrick James Richards
Dissertations
An awareness of the harmonic series and its attributes is a crucial part of learning how to play the horn well, not to mention how the instrument works. Numerous undergraduates enter their career as music majors without understanding this important concept. This implies that students are not learning the harmonic series earlier in their development. Horn method books that instruct the student to use one harmonic series at a time often do not explicitly define the harmonic series, or the exercises are too difficult for developing horn students. Collecting existing and developing original exercises and other teaching tools will provide …
