The Seven Deadly Sins, Peter D. Carney Sep 2002

The Seven Deadly Sins, Peter D. Carney

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This recital was created with the intention of reconnecting fundamental elements of music that have been estranged from jazz in the last 20 years. The uses of themes, experimentation, original composition, spirituality and social criticism or social commitment have all been pushed aside in the present state of jazz. These elements of music which helped jazz and its popularity have fallen under the shadow of improvisational virtuosity in today’s jazz music.

Today jazz is saturated with various personalities, opinions, and world cultures. This new spectrum of possibilities has created numerous frontiers for the future of improvisation. At the same time …

The Meld: The Marriage Of Art And Technology, The Ames Library (Audio And Score), Colin A.D. Borck Jan 2002

The Meld: The Marriage Of Art And Technology, The Ames Library (Audio And Score), Colin A.D. Borck

Compositions

This piece, The Meld, consists of five movements, each tailored to specific aspects of the new Ames Library. Through this short journey of music, one can experience what the library embodies itself, a marriage of art and technology. Emotions arise from all different aspects of each movement, may it be mystery of this new building to the dignity and class of the "Great Room" on the fifth floor holding the stained glass windows from Oxford.

From these five short movements, the Ames Library is introduced, stated, and dignified by a piece of music. It is the realization of Ames that …

Seven Infinitely Short Periods Of (Winter) Time, Bruno Ruviaro

Music

The piece “Seven infinitely short periods of (Winter) time” was composed in 2002 during my first Winter in the United States. It was my first Winter with snow (lots of snow, by the way; I was living in New Hampshire). The experience of below-freezing temperatures was something completely unfamiliar to me, accustomed as I was to the other side of the thermometer, the “above-melting” temperatures from Brazil. The names for each of the movements are merely insinuated on the score (they appear at the end of the last page of each movement: Musification, Old Tune, Basement, Wilting, What??, Snow Down, …

Hillbillies And Sharecroppers: An Introduction To East Coast And Mississippi Blues Styles, John Wesley Taylor

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

In his thesis, Hillbillies and Sharecroppers: an introduction to East coast and Mississippi blues guitar styles, along with the accompanying CD performance, John Taylor discusses pre-WWII blues. The discussion includes regional guitar styles as well as physicalities involved in the performance of early acoustic blues in Appalachia and Mississippi. There is a chapter devoted to subjects covered in early blues songs with a list of lyric examples as well as a biography section devoted to both white and black performers in these styles. The live performance utilizes stories behind the songs and historical information of the performers discussed in the …

The Snow Queen: An Opera In Three Acts Based On A Story By Hans Christian Andersen, Elaine Fine Jan 2002

The Snow Queen: An Opera In Three Acts Based On A Story By Hans Christian Andersen, Elaine Fine

Masters Theses

This is the analysis portion of my thesis The Snow Queen, an opera based on an 1845 story by Hans Christian Andersen. This analysis examines the opera from a structural standpoint and focuses on the harmonic language, the functions of melodic and rhythmic motives in the opera, and the relationship between the original story and its adaptation as an opera.

In addition to the structural analysis I include a discussion of literary and philosophical elements connected with the opera and elaborate on the incorporation of material from Norse mythology, contemporary Finnish poetry, and the work of the 19th-century …

Concerto For Trumpet And Orchestra, Matthew Scott Schaffner Jan 2002

Concerto For Trumpet And Orchestra, Matthew Scott Schaffner

LSU Master's Theses

Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra (2002) is a three-movement composition for orchestra and solo trumpet. Each movement has a prominent theme, although there are themes that pervade the entire composition. The main element in the work is a two-note rhythmic statement. This two-note statement unifies the piece. Another prominent idea is a pitch collection of three consecutive minor seconds and their inversions. The first movement, Incipience, begins with a slow foreshadowing of the work’s main themes. Following the introduction is a quick fanfare that leads back to the opening material. A trumpet cadenza develops from the introductory ideas, which leads …

Algorithmic Composition In Contrasting Musical Styles, Tristan Mcauley Jan 2002

Algorithmic Composition In Contrasting Musical Styles, Tristan Mcauley

Theses : Honours

The aim of this project is to create software that will give non-musical people the ability to compose convincingly 'real' music in specific musical genres. By 'real' music we mean music which is not obviously "machine generated", recognisable as being of the selected genre, of an aesthetically pleasing quality (a very subjective concept) and usable in a commercial context. To achieve this goal various computational techniques are used including genetic algorithms and finite state automata. The process involves an original, top down approach and a bottom up approach based on previous studies. A novel, skeletal structure is formed to depict …
