Shush: A Creative (Re)Construction stems from work conducted during a sabbatical in fall 2017. The audio piece, Shush Me Awake, is a composition that explores the shush as a performative act. The accompanying framing essay uses an autoethnographic approach to provide a contextualized look at the composition process for this piece, while simultaneously situating it within existing scholarship in library and information studies on the image of the librarian and stereotypes. The composer notes provide additional technical details about the audio piece itself.

Libraries are positioned at the nexus of creative production, music publishing, performance, and research. The academic library community has the potential to play an influential leadership role in shaping the music publishing life cycle, making scores more readily discoverable and accessible, and establishing itself as a force that empowers a wide range of creativity and scholarship. Yet the music publishing industry has been slow to capitalize on the digital market, and academic libraries have been slow to integrate electronic music scores into their collections. With Britten’s centenary celebrations comes the publication of a plethora of new research resources, now available to the Britten scholar. These include not only print, audio, and audiovisual publications, but also recent online initiatives, notably the Britten thematic catalogue, published this year. The past ten years have witnessed a significant advance in Britten scholarship, with many offering entirely new perspectives on Britten’s life and work. Due for completion in 2013, the Britten thematic catalogue, an online musicological research tool that will present detailed individual records charting Britten's entire compositional output (approximately 1,200 works both published and unpublished including all juvenilia), is currently being compiled at the Britten-Pears Foundation in the United Kingdom.
