Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Seeing In Imagination: Visual Representation And Spiritual Contemplation In The Ascetical Treatises Of Juan Eusebio Nieremberg, D. Scott Hendrickson
Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications and Other Works
The once famous Spanish Jesuit Juan Eusebio Nieremberg engages the readers of his ascetical treatises De la diferencia entre lo temporal y eterno (1640) and De la hermosura de Dios (1641) in seeing in their imagination a seemly contradictory set of images of the material world: one in contempt, the other in wonder. However, the images serve the same purpose of fostering a greater appreciation for the eternal. This paper examines how Nieremberg’s visually descriptive narrative relates to the ways in which painters of the Spanish Golden Age –Valdés Leal, Sánchez Cotán and Murillo– display items on their canvases, but …
Meeting Student Needs: Integrating Spanish Heritage Language Learners Into The Second Language Classroom, Clara Burgo
Meeting Student Needs: Integrating Spanish Heritage Language Learners Into The Second Language Classroom, Clara Burgo
Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Despite the increase of Spanish heritage language (HL) courses in response to the linguistic needs of HL learners, these courses often combine this student population with advanced second language (L2) learners. This common scenario presents a challenge to many instructors who lack the training to negotiate intercultural and linguistic issues in the classroom so that all students can benefit. This essay presents key intercultural concerns (e.g., embarrassment and intimidation) and suggests strategies for instructors. Twenty-first-century students will work in collaborative contexts, so they must learn how to benefit from their classmates’ strengths and work on their weaknesses through peer interaction …

Culture And Instruction In The Spanish Heritage Language Classroom, Clara Burgo
Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Since cultural competence is inherent to language acquisition, it should take a central role in heritage language courses so that heritage language learners (HLLs) can make connections with their own culture and be aware of the diversity of the Spanish-speaking world. This article presents an overview of the instruction and assessment of culture to promote critical thinking and reflection in order to reduce stereotypes and to validate the cultural heritage of HLLs. The current role of study abroad and service-learning to teach culture in the Spanish heritage language classroom is also discussed.
A Short Letter By Humboldt To Jefferson, Reinhard Andress
A Short Letter By Humboldt To Jefferson, Reinhard Andress
Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications and Other Works
At the tail end of his monumental trip of exploration and scientific discovery through Latin America from 1799 to 1804, the German naturalist Alexander von Humboldt visited President Thomas Jefferson in Washington. United by their common interests in the Enlightenment, they began a correspondence that endured until 1825. This contribution discusses a letter of 1811 by Humboldt to the former president, hitherto unpublished in English. Aside from closing a gap in their correspondence, the letter, although short, offers an illuminating insight into Humboldt’s personal, political, and scientific networks, which included such figures as Abbé José Correia da Serra and Joel …

Erinnerungen An Robert(O) Schopflocher: Ein Multikulturelles Leben Als Vorbild, Reinhard Andress
Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Globalization And Possibilities For Intercultural Awareness: Multimodal Arabic Culture Portfolios At A Catholic University, Sawsan Abbadi
Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications and Other Works
This case study explores the teaching and learning of Arabic at one Catholic university campus, with a focus upon the complex interactions between language and culture in a postmodern globalized context. Specifically, it examines the use of “multimodal culture portfolios” as a means to engage students both linguistically and culturally in classroom and community discourses. Through their interactions and co-construction of knowledge with other participants, these students are led to think about the multiple communicative contexts that are shaping and being shaped by them. Data collection was conducted through survey questionnaires and students' responses to the assigned culture portfolio. The …

Oltre L'Italia: Riflessioni Sul Presente E Il Futuro Del Postcoloniale, Cristina Lombardi-Diop, Caterina Romeo
Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Beyond Italy: reflections on the present and the future of the postcolonial Italy, like other European countries, has undergone an epochal transformation as a postcolonial country in the wake of the fall of the Berlin Wall and as a consequence of the demographic and social changes brought about by mass immigration from the global South. Similarly to most European countries, postcolonial studies applied to the Italian context repositions colonial history and its legacy at the center of the debate on contemporaneity and connects them to transnational immigrations. The historical examination of the Italian past, however, unlike that of other European …

Gossip And Nation In Rosario Ferré’S "Maldito Amor", Ana Rodríguez Navas
Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications and Other Works
A literary criticism of the book "Maldito Amor" by Rosario Ferré is presented. This novel was interpreted as a feminist text of narrative gossip to assert characters voice or own's viewpoint. The author's conception of gossip as a narrative leveling process contrast with the popular conception of the practice as women's talk like chattering housewives and servant girls in the province. An overview of the story is also given.

The percentage of German immigrants in Argentina, measured by the total population of the country, never exceeded the 2% threshold, but their integration took many different forms. ' This was already proven by the 2008 colloquium in Buenos Aires on the subject "La inserci6n de la minoria alemana en Argentina entre 1900 y 1933" (published in 2008 as Volume IV of the Anuario Argentino de Germanfstica). Even this colloquium, which does not commit itself to any period of time, will further broaden the integration therna. What makes the writer Robert {o) Schopflocher interesting in this context is an incorporation in …
