Everyone is subject, at some time in life, to an astonishment of the mind resulting from an awareness of something wonderful. This thesis explores the literary origins of the fifteenth century text Sfera, a rhyming Italian treatise by Gregorio Dati, and considers the patronage, creation, and function of the manuscript copy in the Morgan Library and Museum, focusing on the illustrated maps and cities.
