The search for the 1830s Sarahville de Viesca cemetery took place in Falls County, Texas, located about 10 km southwest of Marlin, Texas (Appendix A). The project was sponsored by the Summerlee Foundation of Dallas. One of the foundation’s purposes is to investigate and preserve Texas history. In 2006 the foundation purchased land that contained the Sarahville de Viesca site and a cemetery called Bull Hill to preserve these sites and make them available for research. As part of this mission, the Summerlee Foundation asked the Texas Historical Commission (THC) to investigate the Bull Hill cemetery (41FA86). The THC investigated …

(Mason Joseph) to conduct a cultural resources survey and assessment for a proposed apartment complex development located on an approximately 4.6-hectare (11.4-acre) tract in San Angelo, Tom Green County, Texas. The proposed apartment complex would be located on undeveloped land in western San Angelo just northwest of the intersection of Northwest Drive and Green Hill Road. Continuing with the on-going study of ancestral Caddo ceramic vessels from East Texas Caddo sites, I document three ceramic vessels and a fourth ceramic vessel section from excavations at the Deshazo site (41NA13/27) by The University of Texas at Austin (UT) in 1975-1976. The Deshazo site is the best studied Allen phase settlement in East Texas, and the archaeological investigations there indicates it was a small centralized hamlet of an affiliated group with a series of circular structures and an associated household or family cemetery. Most sites of the Allen phase were apparently occupied for only short periods of time, …

An archaeological survey in 2018 of the proposed Shackleford Creek Residential Development, a federally permitted project, in the upper Angelina River basin in East Texas by Tejas Archaeology identified the ancestral Caddo Shackleford Creek site (41SM494). Because the site was only investigated with a few shovel tests during the archaeological survey, although sufficient to identify the site extent and general characteristics of deposit depth and artifact content, but appeared to contain intact archaeological deposits of ancestral Caddo age, Nelson and Perttula recommended that the site warranted further evaluation by a plan of test excavations to determine its research potential and …

During the 1930s and 1940s, Thomas and Charlotte Hodges of Bismarck, Arkansas, surface collected and excavated artifacts from archaeological sites in Arkansas. Most came from ancestral Caddo sites in the Middle Ouachita River valley in Clark and Hot Spring counties, with a small portion originating from Southeast Arkansas sites. The Hodgeses, along with Vere Huddleston and Robert Proctor of Arkadelphia, were amateur archeologists at a time when there were few professional archeologists working in the state. Ancestral Caddo ceramic vessels and ceramic vessel sherds have been identified from Cahokia and other sites in the U.S. Midwest in contexts dating from ca. A.D. 1050-1300. Archaeological findings from recent work in the East St. Louis Precinct by the Illinois State Archaeological Survey provides a wealth of data on the Mississippian ceramics found there as well as ceramic wares of likely ancestral Caddo manufacture. These Caddo wares comprise less than 0.3 percent of the more than 15,600 vessel batches in the East St. Louis Precinct assemblage, and almost all of them are on local pastes. The 61st Caddo Conference was held on March 21-23, 2019 in the McCastlain Hall Ballroom on the campus of UCA. The Caddo Conference coincided with Arkansas Archeology Month. Funding was provided by UCA Foundation, the Department of Sociology, Criminology, and Anthropology (SCA) at UCA, the Caddo Conference Organization, the Arkansas Archeological Survey, and the Arkansas Archeological Society.

The conference began Friday, March 21st at 9am with several research presentations throughout the day. Twelve presentations and three research posters were presented. While XRF has been used in archaeology for more than 60 years, and there have been applications in ceramic studies, a recent review of the 9th Edition of The Archaeology, Bioarchaeology, Ethnohistory, and History of the Caddo Indian Peoples of Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas, a comprehensive bibliography, did not yield a single reference to a pXRF study in Caddo ceramics. The Boxed Springs site (41UR30) is an Early Caddo site located in East Texas near the Sabine River. This site covers roughly 15.6 acres and contained at least four mounds, middens, and an extended cemetery. The site's location has been known since the late 1950s, with a series of unconnected avocational and professional archaeological investigations as well as unfortunate looting. As one of the few Early Caddo sites in Texas that contain multiple mounds, the Boxed Springs site is poised to provide great insight into Early Caddo mound construction technologies, settlement patterns, subsistence strategies, and trade and exchange.

The Gus Bogan Farm site, located 1 mile north of the city of Mineola, Texas, in the upper Sabine River basin, was recorded by University of Texas at Austin (UT) archaeologists in 1935 based on the photographic documentation of ancestral Caddo ceramic vessels and elbow pipe in the Gus T. Bogan, Sr. and Gus T. Bogan, Jr. collections from the site. The Bogan’s were digging a Caddo cemetery there, and loaned a portion of their recovered collections to the University Centennial Exposition for the duration of the exhibit. This article analyzes the Bolton Collection of 1384 lithic artifacts, including dart and spear points from the Paleoindian through the Woodland periods. The analysis places the points in the sequence used by Perttula. The points are compared with those from the middle Sabine River basin counties as well as the analysis of the Archaic points of the Cypress Creek drainage basin. In addition, the Archaic and Woodland population density of Camp County based on the proportional frequency of projectile points of known age is compared with that of the middle Sabine River basin counties and the Cypress Basin. The project is a 14-inch pipeline from Praxair Freeport Plant to the Phillips 66 Clemens Storage Cavern located near Freeport, Texas. The project route measures approximately 28.0 kilometers (17.4 miles). The project’s Area of Potential Effect is the entire alignment route within a survey corridor of 91.4 meters (300 feet). This amounts to approximately 252 hectares (622 acres). Over several mobilizations between April 2018 and January 2020, Gray & Pape, Inc., of Houston, Texas, conducted an intensive pedestrian cultural resources survey of two segments (Segments GR02 and GR03) of proposed trail development along Lower Greens Bayou in the City of Houston, Harris County, Texas. The project alignment measures approximately 10.8 kilometers (6.7 miles) in length and encompasses approximately 9.6 hectares (23.7 acres) of area. Another 0.6 kilometers (0.4 miles) or 0.6 hectares (1.4 acres) of project alignment was removed from consideration.
