Exemplarity And The Use Of Antiquity In Erasmus, Brian W. Ogilvie
Exemplarity And The Use Of Antiquity In Erasmus, Brian W. Ogilvie
Brian W. Ogilvie
This paper explores Erasmus’s creative response to the tension between his idealization of antiquity and his Christian commitments. Because he did not distinguish ethical judgments from taste, Erasmus contradicted himself on the value of antiquity and hedged it about with many restrictions.

The dynamics of how the dual system of higher education in Jim Crow America emerged and operated is explored in this article in the context of the largest city in the 20th century U.S. South: Houston, Texas. The history herein moves from a pragmatic response to a deep need for postsecondary educational opportunity in the 1920s to a major expansion in the 1940s in the face of the lawsuit of Heman Sweatt to the 1960s after state-mandated segregation is officially ended.

GIL SCOTT-HERON is a legendary musician in the tradition of Amiri Baraka, Sonia Sanchez, Larry Neal and other Black cultural artists who helped raise the socio-political consciousness during the sixties. Many credit him as the most influential figure in the early genesis of rap music. His incorporation of wordsongs throughout most of his music helped lay the basis for today's rap artists. Beginning in 1970 with SMALL TALK AT 125TH & LENOX, he has recorded over 22 albums, published two novels and three works of poetry, and has performed throughout the world. In 1994, Gil Scott-Heron, after a 12-year absence …

Just as neighbourhoods provided a setting for the interaction of different religious and ethnic groups, so too did the place of employment. Successful neighborhodds have had a sense of community of shared spirit, about them. The same was true for successful industrial enterprises.

Asian Language & Literature Occasional Papers
PREFATORY NOTE
The Area Studies Programs within the International Programs Office of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst initiated in 1976 a series of Occasional papers to provide an outlet for both informal and formal scholarly works of a generci interest to the University community. The initial three papers deal with topics in Japan, China and Laos. In future papers topics will be presented which encompass the major regions of Asia; …

A Social History Of Admissions Policies At Harvard, Yale, And Princeton, 1900-1930, Marcia Graham Synnott
Doctoral Dissertations 1896 - February 2014
Harvard, Yale, and Princeton were selected for study for two major reasons. First, the "Big Three" are among the most prestigious universities in the United States, and they have trained proportionately more "leaders" than any other undergraduate colleges. Secondly, because of their urban locations, Harvard and Yale began to attract after 1900 the ambitious sons of immigrants, who were chiefly Catholic and Jewish. In contrast, Princeton, with its more collegiate atmosphere and its comparative geographical isolation, attracted few of them. While the "Big Three" were willing to admit students of immigrant and minority backgrounds, their traditional role was to educate …
