Carol Bier

Four Buyid coins in t he collection of t he American Numismatic Society, struck between 358- 68H. /A.D. 968- 79 at two mints in Jibal province, illustrate a phenomenon unique in the history of Islamic coinage.! They concern the status of a die engraver named al-Hasan b. Muhammad. A silver dirham bearing his signature was first noted by George C. Miles and published in 1938. It was at that time the only Islamic coin known to bear t he signature of a die engraver. More recently, four additional coins have been located which shed more light upon the career of …

United States Foreign Policy And Mesopotamian Oil 1923-1928, Robert Francaviglia Apr 1977

United States Foreign Policy And Mesopotamian Oil 1923-1928, Robert Francaviglia

History Theses & Dissertations

This thesis views the efforts of American oil interests to participate in the exploitation of Middle East oil resources in the 192Os as a point of departure in United States foreign policy. In its opposition to official involvement in the affairs of private business, the United States Government insisted that American oil companies negotiate directly with the British Government dominated companies which controlled the Near and Middle East. By placing the execution of its international oil policy under the control of private industry, the United States Government surrendered its capacity to conduct diplomacy with regard to a vital strategic resource. …

The Siege Of Herat: 1837-1838, John Carl Nelson May 1976

The Siege Of Herat: 1837-1838, John Carl Nelson

Culminating Projects in History

A condition of economic exhaustion and political anarchy prevailed in Iran by 1800. The great empires of the 1600' s had collapsed and in the wars that followed the prosperity of the area was destroyed. The city of Herat was a microcosm of the general conditions. After 1797 the Kajar dynasty tried to restore the Persian empire to its fonner limits but their efforts met with only limited success and Herat remained their goal in the east. Afghanistan was torn apart by tribal tensions in 1818 and Herat became more vulnerable. The Russian empire achieved a position of dominance in …

Implications Of American Missionary Presence In 19th And 20th Century Iran, Linda Colleen Karimi May 1975

Implications Of American Missionary Presence In 19th And 20th Century Iran, Linda Colleen Karimi

Dissertations and Theses

When dealing with missionary endeavors abroad most writers tend to concentrate on the evangelical aspect. However, missionaries have played a much more extensive role than this. In the case of Iran, the evangelical impact of the missionary effort was minimal in comparison to both the medical and educational branches of their work. In spite of their original intent of revitalizing the native Christianity, it was through their educators and doctors that the missionaries had their greatest influence on 19th and 20th century Iran.

For centuries Iran had been relatively isolated from the outside world and its advances. Such conditions were …

The Policy Of Containment And The Middle East, 1946-1958, Ahed George Samaan Jan 1972

The Policy Of Containment And The Middle East, 1946-1958, Ahed George Samaan

Dissertations and Theses

The main objective of American foreign policy in the Middle East, during the post-War period of 1946-1958, was to safeguard the area against Soviet intrusions. This thesis attempts to examine the causes for the failure of the United States to achieve this objective. It concludes that this failure is the result of an alienation of the major national forces in the Middle East. The United States alienated the Arab world by openly and unreservedly supporting Zionist aims in Palestine. She alienated newly independent states by establishing close cooperation with Britain and France, their former colonial masters. She alienated revolutionary nationalists …

Israel: A Dividing Nation, James C. Mccommas Jr. Aug 1967

Israel: A Dividing Nation, James C. Mccommas Jr.

OBU Graduate Theses

The United Monarchy of Israel divided into two independent states, Israel and Judah, when Rehoboam was acclaimed king after Solomon's death (922). Widespread disagreement exists among Old Testament scholars about when the separation occurred and multifarious divergence of opinion also exists about why it happened.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors, major and minor, which led to the division of Israel. Such scholars as Bright, Orlinsky, and Rowley feel that the split occurred because Rehoboam (Solomon's son) was weak, refused to ease the burdens placed on the people by his rather and failed to accept advice …

The Arab Boycott Of Israel, Hussein Abu-Bakr El Kadi Jan 1960

The Arab Boycott Of Israel, Hussein Abu-Bakr El Kadi

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

An intelligent understanding of international relationships requires a special study of the critical places where continuous crisis arises. It was felt, therefore, desirable to examine a significant aspect of the conflict between the Arab World and the State of Israel that provides the subject of this study.

The economic boycott of Israel has assumed a grave significance in international relations, yet to the author's knowledge this subject has not been investigated in a scholarly and comprehensive manner in any available publication. The writer embarks on this topic in the hope that it may provide the American student of Middle Eastern …

1. The Heirs Of The Roman Empire: Byzantium, Islam, And Medieval Europe, Robert L. Bloom, Basil L. Crapster, Harold A. Dunkelberger, Charles H. Glatfelter, Richard T. Mara, Norman E. Richardson, W. Richard Schubart

Section II: Medieval, Political and Economic Development: Feudalism and Manorialism

The fall of Rome did not, as many contemporaries had expected, preface the end of the world. Rather, it was the end of a world, of a way of life which had characterized the Mediterranean basin for centuries. Amid the ruins of Greco-Roman Civilization, three new civilizations arose in the old imperial territories and their borderlands. One of these new civilizations -- the Western - is our major interest and its first phase -- the medieval -- will here demand our closer attention. The other two -- the Byzantine and the Islamic -- were Eastern and influenced rather than fathered …

A History Of The Missionary Activities Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In The Near East, 1884-1929, Rao H. Lindsay

Theses and Dissertations

In the wake of the Protestant penetration into the Near East, Jacob Spori was sent to Constantinople in 1884 to open a mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Turkey. Spori and later his companion, Joseph M. Tanner, preached first to the Europeans of Constantinople, then projected their efforts down into the major cities of Palestine. Among the German colonists, the missionaries found several valuable converts, most of whom emigrated to Utah.

Ferdinand F. Hintze gained the title "Father of the Armenian Mission" through his extensive preaching tours throughout the interior of Asia Minor. He found …

A Study Of The Partition Of Palestine, Nicola Youssef Sharaiha

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The United Nations Special Committee on Palestine is now a past history, along with the seventeen previous Committees and commissions which had reported on the Palestine problem.

But this Committee had several unusual features. It was a United Nations Committee and the Big Powers had no part in it. It was instructed to complete its work in one hundred and twenty days. The Committee visited four continents, heard many advocates and collected nearly two hundred pounds of typed or printed evidence. Lastly it was the first international Committee to study the problem of Jewry inside and outside Palestine.

I was …
