The Role Of Supernatural Powers In Arab-Byzantine Wars As Reflected By The Popular Imagination, Abdelaziz M. A. Ramadan Jan 2015

The Role Of Supernatural Powers In Arab-Byzantine Wars As Reflected By The Popular Imagination, Abdelaziz M. A. Ramadan

Abdelaziz M. A. Ramadan

Legends and myths seem lacking a solid historicity, but they often, if not always, reflect the imagination, culture and ideas of the peoples who created them. As the recent study demonstrates, aside from the political rivalry, military confrontation and religious difference that were arose between the Byzantines and the Arabs; they shared a similar popular belief in the supernaturalism of the divine powers.

Why Daghestan Is Good To Think: Moshe Gammer, Daghestan, And Global Islamic History”, Rebecca Ruth Gould

Rebecca Gould

During the final decade of his productive life, Moshe Gammer (1950-2013) edited the first major English-language series on Daghestani philology. This chapter examines key aspects of Gammer’s legacy, while offering an overview of Daghestani philology from the colonial period to the present, and outlining how this field of inquiry enables us to revise regnant paradigms concerning language, law, and the circulation of culture within contemporary Islamic Studies. I concentrate on the potential of Daghestan’s Islamic archives to contribute to the study of linguistic and legal modernity, transregional Arabic in its interface with the vernacular, and the multiplicity of Islamic modernities. …

Hornos Cerámicos Islámicos En El Tossal De Les Basses (Alicante, España). Islamic Pottery Kilns In The Tossal De Les Basses (Alicante, Spain)., Pablo Rosser Phd., Seila Aixa Soler Pre Phd

pablo rosser

Beyond Anti-Semitism, Rebecca Gould

Rebecca Gould

Focusing on internal contradictions within the Israeli left, this essay considers the impact of the historical legacy of anti-Semitism on everyday thinking about Israel and the Palestinian territories. Contesting the view that to criticize Israel is to engage in anti-Semitic defamation, it offers an historical account of how Israel's actions in the West Bank have come to be immunized from conscientious criticism. It also documents how progressive media outlets in contemporary Israel have silenced or otherwise marginalized Israel's most active critics.

Teaching Classical Sociological Theory In Singapore: The Context Of Eurocentrism, Syed Farid Alatas Jan 2011

Teaching Classical Sociological Theory In Singapore: The Context Of Eurocentrism, Syed Farid Alatas

farid alatas

We argue that there is a need to rethink the teaching of classical sociological theories given our concern with the limitations of the received theoretical canon, and through our encounters with students of sociology who also persistently ask that the classics be shown to be meaningful and of contemporary relevance. In our teaching, we highlight Eurocentrism as an additional and essential context for understanding the rise of classical sociological theory, and to attune students in more meaningful ways to the works of Marx, Weber, and Durkheim. Ironically, such an approach constitutes a new form of legitimating the classics by revealing …
