"The Caucasian Persuasion Here In The 'Dale": Othering, White Normality, And Post-Racialism In Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Isaiah Lee
University Honors Theses
This thesis engages the construction of race within the television landscape of Buffy the Vampire Slayer to investigate how well-meaning, progressive media either reinvents or repudiates racial stereotype. This paper also examines the figure of the Other, as it is evoked in horror, and utilizes Hazel Carby's conception of the fantasized black subject to analyze the setting and characters of Buffy the Vampire Slayer with an eye towards the inherent assumptions the show makes about race. Ultimately, I argue that Buffy's representation of race assumes a white normality, flattening its non-white characters under the guise of inherent difference, even …

Breaking The Feedback Loop: Experimental Filmmakers Confronting Everyday Surveillance Technologies, Taz Coffey
Breaking The Feedback Loop: Experimental Filmmakers Confronting Everyday Surveillance Technologies, Taz Coffey
University Honors Theses
Along with shifts in how surveillance technologies work to control and capitalize on everyday life comes a need to understand and critique them. What past and present paranoid dystopian stories and other pop-culture parables seem to leave out is any thoughtful consideration of how surveillance racializes bodies and consolidates power in favor of racist hegemony, specifically in a post-9/11 context. We often fail to question in what ways popular discourse on surveillance and resistance to surveillance practices reinforce violence against--and consolidate control over--marginalized populations. Part of this almost willful negligence is symptomatic of visibility’s status as a both taken-for-granted and …

Delinquent Youth: The Ofuna New Wave, Basil Swartzfager
Delinquent Youth: The Ofuna New Wave, Basil Swartzfager
Anthós
In 1960 the Japanese film studio Shochiku Co. announced "the Ofuna New Wave" a revolution in Japanese filmmaking similar to France’s immensely popular Nouvelle Vague. This paper attempts to discover whether this Ofuna New Wave was simply a marketing ploy Shochiku developed in order to attract a larger youth market, or whether it constitutes a legitimate artistic movement along the lines of France’s New Wave. The methods used were a combination of primary research of four Shochiku films released in 1960 as well as secondary historical research regarding the studio and time period. The Shochiku films were then compared to …
