[Mis-]Managing Fisheries On The West Coast Of Ireland In The Nineteenth Century, John B. Roney Jan 2019

[Mis-]Managing Fisheries On The West Coast Of Ireland In The Nineteenth Century, John B. Roney

History Faculty Publications

This study focuses on the cultural heritage of artisan coastal fishing in the west of Ireland in the 19th century. The town and port of Dingle, County Kerry, offers an important case study on the progress of local development and changing British policies. While there was clearly an abundance of fish, the poverty and the lack of capital for improvements in ports, vessels, gear, education, and transportation, left the fishing industry underdeveloped until well after the 1890s. In addition, a growing rift developed between the traditional farmer-fishermen and the new middle-class capitalist companies. After several royal commissions examined the fishing ...

#Instagramele: Learning Spanish Through A Social Network, Pilar Munday, Yuly Asencion Delaney, Adelaida Martín Bosque

Languages Faculty Publications

Social networking (SN) tools have the potential to contribute to language learning because they promote linguistic interactions in person-to-person communication, increasing the opportunities to process input in the L2, engaging learners in negotiation of meaning and requiring learners to produce L2 output, as proposed in the interactionist theory by Long (1985, 1996). These virtual personal connections with other learners and language experts around the world could provide a rich environment for sociocultural language exchanges (following the principles of the sociocultural approach proposed by Lantolf, 2002, based on the work of Vygotsky, 1978) that may increase motivation for learning, develop L2 ...

From Russia With Love: Souvenirs And Political Alliance In Martha Wilmot’S The Russian Journals, Pamela Buck

English Faculty Publications

Although virtually unknown in literary studies today, Martha Wilmot's The Russian Journals remains an important text on the material circulation of things in an increasingly global eighteenth-century world. The Russian Journals describes her stay in Russia from 1803 to 1808 with family friend and powerful political figure Princess Dashkova. In particular, the souvenirs that she exchanges with Princess Dashkova shed light on how cultural and political connections were formed between Russia and Britain as well as how national identity was redefined on a more global scale.

Medjugorje, Bosnia: Does Mary Integrate Or Disintegrate?, Kathryn Tegart Taylor May 2010

Medjugorje, Bosnia: Does Mary Integrate Or Disintegrate?, Kathryn Tegart Taylor

Master of Arts in Religious Studies (M.A.R.S. Theses)

The religious ritual of pilgrimage offers insight into the various ways in which sacred space is understood. Thinkers such as Emile Durkheim, Karl Marx, and Mircea Eliade offer several understandings of religion and interpretations of the role of ritual and the sacred. By investigating the specific historical and cultural context of a much visited, contemporary pilgrimage site of Medjugorje, Bosnia, it becomes clear that there is a striking difference here between the popular and official understanding of the space. A study of Marian apparitional pilgrimages within the Roman Catholic tradition provides context for the on-going and tumultuous debate within both ...

Constructing Authority In Lope De Vega's Egloga A Claudio: Self-Referentiality, Literary Judgment, And Ethics, Mark J. Mascia Jan 2005

Constructing Authority In Lope De Vega's Egloga A Claudio: Self-Referentiality, Literary Judgment, And Ethics, Mark J. Mascia

Languages Faculty Publications

The poetry of Lope de Vega has most often been analyzed for its treatment of themes such as love, religious devotion, or autobiographical introspection. However, one other key aspect of his poetry, especially of his longer poetical works (such as his epistolas and eglogas), is the engagement of literature and ethical concerns often related to the art of writing poetry. The purpose of this study is to examine one such work, the Egloga a Claudio (1631), a lengthy poem which normally should be classified as an epistola, for its role as l literary vehicle for passing judgment on different issues.

This paper seeks to build upon such interest in Pinkerton's work and observations, dividing his Bible Society career into four phases: The Russian Years; His Hopes for War-Torn Europe; Surviving the Apocrypha Crisis; and Pinkerton's New Path in Frankfurt.
