Work And The Family: Themes In The Plays Of Arthur Miller, Sue Parsons

The study is divided into four parts, the first three having to do with the family and the last with work. The first section outlines the relationships of family members, including their attitudes toward themselves, toward each other, and toward society. The next two have to do with “Responsibility” as viewed by the family, and the need for “Stability” within the home and outside it. The final section examines the jobs held by Miller’s characters, their attitudes toward those jobs, and the extent to which an occupation helps to influence the characters and their familial relationships. This dissertation deals with the role of Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. as a popular literary hero. over the last ten years he has become increasingly significant, especially to the younger, college-age reader. From an unknown writer of short stories for "slick" magazines, he has developed into one of America's most prominent, controversial writers. He has branched out into other fields t notably television, the movies and the theater. This study will consider Vonnegut's total image as revealed in his novels and also in his non fiction works.

It was the purpose of my thesis to trace the evolution of Steinbeck's view, in his non-fiction of what the conflict between good and evil consists, along with the development of this concern, and its related stylistic influence, on his fiction, in order to show that Steinbeck's major concern was for man's relationship to this conflict.
I was alerted to the existence of an evolution in view in Steinbeck by the chance reading of his last novel, The Winter of Our Discontent, in juxtaposition with several early novels. In order best to follow this change, then, I read all …
