Romanticism, Janice Wilson Jan 1971

Romanticism, Janice Wilson

Honors Theses

Romanticism actually blossomed out in the beginning of the nineteenth century. The term romantic was first used by Fridrich Schlegel to identify the new mental revolution that was taking place all over the world. This new movement was not concerned with just one phase of living such as politics, but everything from literature, music, and art, to science. The Romantics were not content with the existing sciences, but turned their avid minds to new, intriguing fields of knowledge. The Age of Enlightenment had set the stage for the idealistic Romantics.

It is the purpose of this paper to explore the …

On The Road With The Philosopher And The Profiteer: A Study Of Hugh Henry Brackenridge's Modern Chivalry, Wendy Martin

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

MODERN CHIVALRY, the first distinctively American novel, was written in installments in 1792-18151 by Hugh Henry Brackenridge, Princeton graduate and frontier lawyer. In addition to providing extensive commentary on the political differences of the Jeffersonians and Hamiltonians, the novel attempted to establish an apolitical value system for the new democracy which was based on philosophical reflection rather than existing social precedence. Brackenridge's concern with independent thinking in Modern Chivalry foreshadows the themes of artistic isolation, subjectivity, and alienation which preoccupy many nineteenth- and twentieth-century American novelists.

Wordworth's "Lucy" Poems, Spencer Hall Jan 1971

Wordworth's "Lucy" Poems, Spencer Hall

Faculty Publications

This essay seeks to provide meaning and a context for interpretation of the Romantic "Lucy" poems by William Wordsworth. Hall argues against two critics' opposing interpretations by suggesting the meaning is humanistic which provides somewhat of a clarity into Wordsworth's poetic development. Hall suggests that his proposed context into these poems isn't merely one dimensional, but multi-faceted and draws upon other critics.

Mark Twain's Study Of The Effects Of Slavery And Its Relationship To Training, Sharon Faye Nielson Jan 1971

Mark Twain's Study Of The Effects Of Slavery And Its Relationship To Training, Sharon Faye Nielson

All Master's Theses

This paper presents a study of Mark Twain's treatment of slavery, especially in relation to his theory of training. In his novels Huckleberry Finn, Puddn'head Wilson, The Prince and the Pauper, and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court Twain portrays the effects of slavery and training on the personality of the slave and the slaveholder. Twain deals largely with the psychological effects of slavery, which tend to dehumanize both slave and slaveholder, deeply and permanently marking their personalities.

A Study Of Reflectors And Reflections In Four Stories By Flannery O'Connor, William Leo Maffini Jan 1971

A Study Of Reflectors And Reflections In Four Stories By Flannery O'Connor, William Leo Maffini

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Throughout her fiction, Flannery O' Connor uses character reflections to present mirror analogues. The recurrence of these mirror analogues inspired me to look deeper into her fiction for analogues that might superficially appear to be unrelated and dissimilar. I found that in addition to her more obvious reflections there was another whole set of what I term reflectors that have the same function of pointing up traits or corresponding characteristics between characters by dwelling upon their dissimilarities. For the sake of convenience I have divided the mirror analogues in O'Connor's fiction into two categories: reflectors and reflections.

The Song Of The Righteous: An Historical And Literary Analysis Of The Latter-Day Saint Hymnal, Ruth Alene Thomson Symons Jan 1971

The Song Of The Righteous: An Historical And Literary Analysis Of The Latter-Day Saint Hymnal, Ruth Alene Thomson Symons

Theses and Dissertations

The hymnal of the Latter-day Saints first proposed only shortly after the organization of the Church and published continually every few years between 1835 and 1871, is a remarkably accurate indicator of the changing fortunes and beliefs of the early Saints. The first hymnal, gathered by Emma Smith, uncompromisingly sets forth the basic Mormon belief in man's free agency, his innate perfectability, and his kinship to his Heavenly Father. Later editions reflect the missionary concerns of the church (1840), the tremendous persecution the saints are subjected to (1841), the Church difficulties after the martyrdom of Joseph Smith (1849), the call …
