Creative Works
“Between the Bars” is a senior project exhibition, in collaboration with Cal Poly Sociology Professor Dr. Unique Shaw-Smith. Featuring artwork produced by incarcerated artists, the goal is to undo negative stereotypes and to empower the rehabilitation of incarcerated artists individually and collectively through art.The exhibit demonstrates that rehabilitation does occur in prison and emphasizes that art has the power to transcend all social differences and divisions. The exhibit features more than 60 works in diverse mediums including sculpture, painting, and poetry by 34 incarcerated artists from California Men’s Colony.

Description: Artist Bill Daniel has been touring with bands, film shows, installations and pop-up photo shows for 30 years. Bill Daniel, artist, photographer, documentary and Guggenheim Fellow (2008) visited MDOCS on November 3-4, 2015. A multi-disciplinary activist and self-described hobo filmmaker and phototramp, Daniel offers reporting from the margins in a film screening and pop-up exhibit, and lessons on how to build your own vision and opportunities with a workshop on DIY Touring & Exhibition Strategies for Visual and Media Artists.

“Self-portrait with skull,” a graphite 18" x 24" drawing, was accepted into MIRROR IMAGES: Reflections on/of the Arts, the 2012 Kreft Juried Exhibition held at the Kreft Center for the Arts at Concordia University, Ann Arbor, Michigan. The jurors, Gloria Prischet and Rocco DePietro, co-founders and co-directors of Gallery Project, Ann Arbor, Michigan, chose images that according to the prospectus, “displayed the very best in the visual arts that illustrate the reflective nature of the visual arts in the literal, intellectual and metaphorical sense of that word.” The exhibit ran from March 6 – April 4, 2012.

My poster illustration, "Angel Rising," was included in the 2nd Annual International Commitment to Excellence in Art and Sport: A Fine Art Competition Exhibit at the National Art Museum of Sport (NAMOS) at Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis. NAMOS was founded in 1959, and features one of the nation's largest collections of fine art depicting sports. The collection includes more than 900 paintings, photographs, sculptures, and mixed-media works representing some 40 sports. October 27, 2011 to February 29, 2012.

“The Navigator’s Gift,” was included in Message in a Bottle, an invitational exhibit at the Light Grey Art Lab in Minneapolis, MN. The exhibit celebrated the secrets, codes, and hidden images that make us look closer, dig deeper, and investigate a piece of art.
