States of Incarceration at Skidmore College
Sep 2 - Oct 11, Exhibition: Tang Teaching Museum, Payne Room
A “National Dialogue of Local Stories” developed by the New School's Humanities Action Lab, States of Incarceration is the first national traveling exhibition and coordinated public dialogue to explore the history and future of mass incarceration in the United States. Heavy Ink: A Documentary On The Comicbook Revolution, Renzo Adler
Heavy Ink: A Documentary On The Comicbook Revolution, Renzo Adler
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Heavy Ink is a documentary short focusing on the comic anthology magazine, Heavy Metal, examining its history as both a standout comic magazine, and how it fits into the larger tradition of comic books. What started off in 1977 as a sci-fi offshoot of National Lampoon ushered in a new era of comics by bridging the gap between American and European comic sensibilities with a talent pool from all over the world.
Heavy Metal would go on to have reverberations beyond comics into music, movies, and the global entertainment landscape of today. Heavy Metal introduced the world to artists such …

Rationality points to the complete annihilation and end of a life when the body perishes, and yet when a loved one dies we continue to experience that person in a myriad of ways. The focus of this thesis will be a phenomenological exploration of the earthly afterlife of those we have loved and lost. By positing the subject as always intersubjective and as temporal in nature, this thesis will investigate how we continue to create and interact with the deceased upon the earth. In the introduction, this work will be placed in the context of the phenomenological tradition. The first …

MSU Graduate Theses
I continue to explore the space that exists between worlds and ideology in an attempt to blur the demarcation between them. Using the everyday, I attempt to show features of the uncanny and sublime nature of common objects by including fantastic elements while maintaining an illusion of reality. Rather than showing the audience one true meaning, I offer them a lens to one of the infinite possibilities. The story is left for the observer to complete, each narrative unique and valid. As the Western viewer tends to seek out absolutes and categorical placements, I try to create a venue that …
Matter Under Mind, John F. Lause
Matter Under Mind, John F. Lause
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The artist discusses the work for his Masters of Fine Arts exhibition, Mind under Matter, held at the Tipton Gallery in downtown Johnson City, Tennessee. Exhibition dates are from March 27th through April 5th 2017. ‘Matter under Mind’ explores the balance of control and non-control within the art-making process. This technique creates an automatic dialogue resulting in abstraction guided by the subconscious. The title ‘Matter under Mind’ is a slight play on the phrase ‘mind over matter’ emphasizing how matter/material is manipulated by the mind through the making of artwork, and within the mind’s eye or imagination.
The video installation …

2017 Storytellers’ Institute
Each year the MDOCS Storytellers’ Institute celebrates documentary work and practice around a centralized theme. For the inaugural Institute in 2015 we explored whose stories get told, delving into family and storytelling. In 2016, the Institute considered what constitutes documentary, considering the lines between fact and fiction. For the third Institute in June 2017, MDOCS invited documentary creators whose work engages with the where of documentary, the operation of SPACE & PLACE.
Spaces matter: streets, kitchens, forests, schools, offices, hospitals, mountaintops, ocean floors. Anywhere that people live, work, play, worship, create, and cross provides the context of …

Department of Fine & Performing Arts: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Jessica Gondek's recent drawings consider the relationship between human beings and machines - a theme she has explored since the early days of her career. In the complex world Gondek sets before her viewers, machines are not simply friend or foe, but tools contributing to the quality of human life while at the same time challenging and even threatening human beings' central position in the universe. Today, this problematic relationship remains as important for understanding the modern human condition as it was a century ago when such concerns were taken up by Marcel Duchamp, Hannah Hoch, Francis Picabia and Man …

First To Go Abroad" is a partnership between the Loyola Marymount University First To Go Program, LMU Study Abroad, and the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE), which seeks to increase study abroad opportunities for first-generation college students. In 1688 a legal text, Renovación, was printed in Mexico City, the capital of the Viceroyalty of New Spain, that explains a twelve year trial that focuses on determining if a 16th century sculpture miraculously renewed itself. The final decision came from the Archbishop of Mexico City. A year after the book’s publication, the sculpture was recognized as miraculous. In 1699, ten years after this event, the author of Renovación wrote another book that narrates the same sculpture's history, Exaltación, but addressed a wider audience, and from a religious and pious perspective. The Exaltación was republished a …

Navigating The Moral Pitfalls Of The Service Industry "The Book Of Snake", Paul S. Punzo
University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This thesis paper examines how I turned real life experiences and observations into a fictionalized screenplay that explores the potential for vice inherent in tip-based service industry jobs. After that, I move on to the preproduction process and touch on casting, location scouting, visualization, production design, budgeting and crewing. Next I discuss how the preproduction and on-set efforts of individuals were all critical to our production. Then I chronicle the ups and downs of postproduction. Finally, I conclude with an admittedly subjective analysis of the effectiveness of the movie itself.
