What Is The Entrepreneurship Process For Communication Design Enterprises?, Con Kennedy Mar 2023

What Is The Entrepreneurship Process For Communication Design Enterprises?, Con Kennedy

Doctoral

The literature indicated that entrepreneurship plays a crucial role in economic development and that understanding what entrepreneurship is has changed with the development of society and entrepreneurship theory (Murphy et al., 2006). However, there is an identified skills deficit in understanding entrepreneurship in the communication design sector (Design Enterprise Skillnet, 2021; Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, 2016; Intertrade Ireland, 2009; Design Council, 2007; Enterprise Ireland, 1999). Nevertheless, within each of these studies, the deficit has not been addressed, nor is the entrepreneurship process for communication design enterprises established. The literature on entrepreneurship generally ignores entrepreneurship in the design sector, …

Cultivating Collaboration: Optimizing Communication Between Designers And Non-Designers, Haley Constance Tebo

Masters Theses

Clients and designers, having different tacit knowledge, fail to effectively communicate with each other during the design process. These inadequacies risk relationships, reputations, and project success. This issue has long been recognized in the field of design, often as a concern with client involvement. This research aims to identify these complications in the design process and inform how they might be amended. Specifically, it investigates how the relationship between designers and clients can be improved in order to garner better communication and greater project success. In this context, clients are defined as non-designers that commission design professionals. A literature review …

What Does A Rooster Say?, Kim Pfeffer Jan 2023

What Does A Rooster Say?, Kim Pfeffer

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

“What Does a Rooster Say?” Growing up in Vietnam’s K–12 public school system, I found the mandatory textbooks overwhelming, a sentiment shared by my peers. As an educator and designer, I noticed a need for improvement in Vietnam’s current textbooks. Despite numerous reforms, they still don’t effectively cater to their primary audience: the students. The newer textbooks, especially for first graders, are visually dense and complex, causing concern among researchers, parents, and educators. This led to the idea of creating an alternative. Reflecting on the older textbooks from the '80s and '90s, while not perfect, they were more user-friendly with …

Upon personal reflection, I have discovered that economic, cultural, and social issues have become very important in my life. My thesis investigation aims to reveal the global connection with commodities by focusing on Iran’s economic inflation to create a conceptual and visual representation of impacted consumables. Persian rugs and tile designs are the centers of the culture and symbols of the Iranian people. I used graphic design to illustrate tiles utilizing economic …

Rebranding The Cal Poly Writers' Collective, Micah Wilkins Jun 2022

Rebranding The Cal Poly Writers' Collective, Micah Wilkins

Graphic Communication

For my senior project, I rebranded the Writers’ Collective, Cal Poly’s creative writing club. This process included collecting feedback from the club members and creating both physical and virtual deliverables. I designed a new logo, then created a brand based around it. Using these, I then designed merchandise featuring the logo, such as stickers, and also designed a new template for the club newsletter. To ensure the rebrand is effective, I created a guide on best file practices and uploaded this, as well as all the designs I had created, to the club’s Google Drive, so that future officers can …

Next Gen: Guiding Dads As They Spiritually Guide The Next Generation, Deylan Michael Smith May 2022

Next Gen: Guiding Dads As They Spiritually Guide The Next Generation, Deylan Michael Smith

Masters Theses

The spiritual development during the teenage years are pivotal in determining the religious and spiritual values as teenagers transition into adulthood. As serious as this stage of development is, there is a lack of involvement in the faith development of teenagers on the part of parents, specifically Christian fathers. With this lack of paternal support during faith development, the percentage of those leaving the church during adolescents and early adulthood is rapidly increasing. The aim of the research was to understand important milestones in spiritual development of teenagers, why Christian dads are uninvolved in this development, and best strategies for …

Restaurant Rebranding: The Capital View Cafe, Amaya Nordos

Research and Scholarship Symposium Posters

The objective of this project was to design a new logo, identity, and stationery system for a Saint Paul non-chain breakfast cafe. There was also an emphasis on working conceptually and utilizing an aesthetic that is appropriate for the intended audience, while also keeping in mind and being stylistically sensitive to the graphic design community that will eventually judge the success of the project as a whole.

Over the course of this project, I became very familiar with the …

[Un]Seen, Al Benbow Apr 2022

[Un]Seen, Al Benbow

Honors Projects

[un]seen is a community-centered project and installation that consists of a collection of portraits and statements from underrepresented members of the LGBTQ+ community. Each subject submits their own action item that depends on their identity and response to the question, “what do you wish people understood about the experience of being [your identity]?”

This project was initially born out of research into the commodification of LGBTQ+ identities, and the realization that corporations tend to market to members of the LGBTQ+ community who they believe have the most spending power: white, cisgender, able-bodied, upper class, gay men, and therefore most often …

Less Water, More Holy: Tools For Sustainable Ablution, Faheem Khan Jan 2022

Less Water, More Holy: Tools For Sustainable Ablution, Faheem Khan

Theses and Dissertations

Prayer is an important part of life for many people, whether it takes the form of meditation or talking to God. Muslims pray five times a day, and before each prayer, they first clean themselves by performing ritual ablution (wudu). The eight-step purification process of wudu cleanses the body from head to toe. The Hadiths of Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim tell us the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ needed just one mudd of water (650ml) to complete wudu, but most people consume many times that amount—four-to-seven liters is more common today.

To visualize and better understand the nature …

Getting Old And Technology, Brenden A. Davis

Masters Theses

It is generally agreed upon that the purpose of technology is to aid humanity through various means like: making a task more convenient, or overcoming something previously deemed “impossible.” From the dawn of man to the era in which we stand, technology has steadily improved alongside civilization. This steady progress has seemingly hastened every year. Looking at technology from the viewpoint of “necessary everyday life tasks,” the past three decades have changed dramatically. With every year that passes, more things have become accessible through the web. Not everyone can keep pace with this rapid expansion into the “non-physical” digital world …

Young Adult Book Cover Design And Its Impact On Reader Interest, Megan A. Mccullough Oct 2021

Young Adult Book Cover Design And Its Impact On Reader Interest, Megan A. Mccullough

Selected Honors Theses

A book cover is one of the first steps in selling a book and is vital in catching a reader’s attention. Still, many book covers in the young adult fiction market are ineffective at reaching their target audience. Since the birth of young adult books, cover design styles have changed drastically, yet little research has been done. Because of this lack of research, two new surveys were built to investigate what specific elements and styles of current young adult book covers appeal to readers. One survey was for readers, and one survey was for professionals working in the publishing industry. …

Human Origins: An Infocomic, Jocelyn Grant Oct 2021

Human Origins: An Infocomic, Jocelyn Grant

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

Perceptions of anthropology and especially human origins are skewed in the public consciousness, in part due to pop culture and in part due to longstanding misleading visual communication. This project is one experimental attempt to bridge the gap between anthropology education and the public through the application of design and design intentionality. With the book itself being currently unfinished, this project is equally an examination of the process of creating such a work and the visual choices the author made in pursuit of the project’s ideals.

Visualizing A Woman’S Journey Through The Old Testament Prophetic Books: Improving Female Study Methods Through Visual Supplementation, Olivia Martin Smith May 2021

Visualizing A Woman’S Journey Through The Old Testament Prophetic Books: Improving Female Study Methods Through Visual Supplementation, Olivia Martin Smith

Christians are often less likely to read the Old Testament prophetic literature compared to other books in Scripture. This poses a problem within the Church for Biblical literacy and understanding Scripture as one complete narrative that points to Christ. The aim of this research was to discover what causes a struggle for Christian women understanding the prophetic literature, why Old Testament prophetic literature is important for women to study, and the best methods for communicating this information to a female audience. The following research questions were asked: 1. What is the standard perspective of an average Christian when studying Old …

Disconnected, James H. Reeves Ii May 2021

Disconnected, James H. Reeves Ii

Masters Theses

Even with complications, remote learning can be successful with the development of user friendly designed solutions. While there are educational tools and platforms available that electronically support remote learning, many students and teachers do not have deep technological knowledge and many lack internet access outside of school. Without access to the internet, many of them experience interruptions in their education. This underscores the needs of both the educator, and the students during sudden and unexpected periods of school closure. The research objectives of this project focus on current learning tools, their design, and their accessibility during remote learning. The level …
