Always Judge A Book By Its Cover, Abby Miller
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The goal for this honors project is to build my illustration portfolio and to explore the world of children's book illustration. This project will facilitate my improvement in design layout, theming, and illustration. I would love to pursue a job involving children's book illustrations at some point in the future and completing this project would help me to understand the challenges that come with designing such covers, it would improve my ability to illustrate in a purposeful manner, and it would strengthen my portfolio overall.

Extending Public Accessibility To The Mind: Designing Airports For People With Aphasia, Savannah Eloise Garzon
Extending Public Accessibility To The Mind: Designing Airports For People With Aphasia, Savannah Eloise Garzon
Masters Theses
Imagine traveling in an airport in another country. The language is entirely foreign, and all signs are written in text you cannot understand. You have ten minutes to make your connection. How do you find your gate? How do you ask questions? This hypothetical generation of panic is the reality for many travelers every day who suffer from aphasia. Aphasia is a language disorder often caused by stroke or other brain injury that makes it difficult to communicate, read, and process numbers, especially in stressful environments like an airport. More than two million people in America suffer from aphasia and …
The Space Between, Alexander Dixon
The Space Between, Alexander Dixon
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The Space Between investigates the intricate relationship between perception and reality. By integrating graphic design principles with the optical qualities of glass, the exhibition creates visual distortions that challenge and redefine our understanding of the world. The pervasive use of black throughout the exhibition signifies the vectorized image, a vital element of graphic design and the technological abyss prevalent within our society. The fundamental geometric shapes, coupled with minimalist sculptural forms, employ a graphic approach to highlight visual communication's influence on perception.
Graphic design has a history of shaping public perception. The basis of graphic design is the act of …
Using Graphic Design To Develop And Promote A Character Development Program, Mia Mummau
Using Graphic Design To Develop And Promote A Character Development Program, Mia Mummau
Senior Honors Theses
There are many out-of-school time (OST) programs such as sports, art, and community clubs. The majority of these programs have been strategically designed to assist with child development. Non-profit organizations, such as OST programs, struggle to gain funding and parental support due to the inability to communicate their message effectively. Branding is key for the programs to capture the attention of children and parents to better communicate core values and positive intentions. This project will assist a football team's character-building program in its communication of the vision, scope, and sequence. This will help gain parent buy-in and donation of resources.

Development Of “Amamizu Drink” As A Tool For Awareness Regarding Rainwater Conservation, And Investigation Of The Effectiveness Of Different Label Designs, Sho Kondo, Toshihiro Kasai, Jun Mitera
IASDR Conference Series
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted at the United Nations Summit in September 2015 included water-related goals. However, rainwater is not recognized as an important resource in Japan. To address this issue, “Amamizu Drinks,” which involve a non-routine experience of “drinking rainwater,” were developed as tools for creating awareness regarding rainwater conservation. Additionally, three types of label designs were created, and their effectiveness in developing rainwater awareness was investigated. As a result of the survey, label designs with handwritten illustrations were found to be the most preferred, and the color evaluation was particularly high. Based on these findings, further research …
Crossover Logics, Serena Ho
Crossover Logics, Serena Ho
Masters Theses
As more and more of modern life is measured and calculated by computational machines, our realities are flattened into streams of data, bits, and binary. As a graphic designer operating under societal and technological systems that unrelentingly speed up, simplify, and reduce the individual into a digital form legible to machines, my response to these conditions is to search for moments of imagination, poetry, and play within these structures. In my practice, I pair machined forms with human gestures to bridge the duality between computer and human logics, the rational and the emotional, and the measurable and unmeasurable aspects of …
Press Play, Karan Kumar
Press Play, Karan Kumar
Masters Theses
"Press Play" arises from a conviction that a predilection to play is not an infantile diversion; instead, it extends our human ability to magnify, augment and shape reality. This thesis moves through different sites —all metaphorical playgrounds— where cultural repertoires are altered, negotiated, and invented through play. Each playground is a laboratory for innovation and a catalyst for developing a mental aptitude for reimagining ways to occupy familiar structures: the slide, swing, carousel, jungle gym, and bench as navigational spaces. The thesis becomes an experiential landscape through situations, processes, methods, and stylistic movements.
Access In Ambiguity, Moritz Lónyay
Access In Ambiguity, Moritz Lónyay
Masters Theses
The wealth of color present in nature has long been a major source of inspiration for works of art and design. Yet as more species become extinct due to habitat loss, climate change and unchecked hunting, will we face a less colorful, more monotonous future? How will this impact art and design and how could either be utilized as tools to counteract the loss of color? This thesis speculates upon such a future by the sixth wave of mass extinction and instigates a movement that celebrates color. Growing up in the Anthropocene, the first geological epoch in which human existence …

The Connection Between Gen Z And Online Fast Fashion Media; Aiming To Create A Sustainable Future In Fashion., Rachel Peters
School of Art Undergraduate Honors Theses
It is impossible to think about culture in the past two decades without referencing social media. My generation, commonly known as Gen Z (born between 1997-2010), has been on the forefront of social media development. One of the first generations to grow up with some form of unfiltered online social experience, Gen Z has been hard wired to consume media. While using social media alongside my peers, I have observed a problem that has resulted from this: mass consumption. A mass consumption of food, beauty products, home decor, and clothing in particular. On social media we see hundreds of videos …

What Is The Entrepreneurship Process For Communication Design Enterprises?, Con Kennedy
Doctoral
The literature indicated that entrepreneurship plays a crucial role in economic development and that understanding what entrepreneurship is has changed with the development of society and entrepreneurship theory (Murphy et al., 2006). However, there is an identified skills deficit in understanding entrepreneurship in the communication design sector (Design Enterprise Skillnet, 2021; Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, 2016; Intertrade Ireland, 2009; Design Council, 2007; Enterprise Ireland, 1999). Nevertheless, within each of these studies, the deficit has not been addressed, nor is the entrepreneurship process for communication design enterprises established. The literature on entrepreneurship generally ignores entrepreneurship in the design sector, …

Cultivating Collaboration: Optimizing Communication Between Designers And Non-Designers, Haley Constance Tebo
Masters Theses
Clients and designers, having different tacit knowledge, fail to effectively communicate with each other during the design process. These inadequacies risk relationships, reputations, and project success. This issue has long been recognized in the field of design, often as a concern with client involvement. This research aims to identify these complications in the design process and inform how they might be amended. Specifically, it investigates how the relationship between designers and clients can be improved in order to garner better communication and greater project success. In this context, clients are defined as non-designers that commission design professionals. A literature review …
