The Classical Versus The Grotesque Body In Edith Wharton's Fiction, Joshua T. Temples
The Classical Versus The Grotesque Body In Edith Wharton's Fiction, Joshua T. Temples
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In her landmark works The House of Mirth (1905), The Custom of the Country (1913), and The Age of Innocence (1920), Edith Wharton responds to earlier depictions of the classical, pure Victorian and Edwardian woman. Wharton's "inconvenient" women overturn popular stereotypes. Subsequently, they are barred from their social groups, but they are independent, unlike the complicit and obedient women of the classical body, most of whom ascribe to the trope of the "Angel in the House." The grotesque seeks to undercut the unrealistic expectations enforced by the classical through its embodiment of progression and humanity, and Wharton is drawn to …
Exploring Illusions Of Height In Suit Design, Michael P. Lee
Exploring Illusions Of Height In Suit Design, Michael P. Lee
Theses and Dissertations--Psychology
Objective: The goal of this research was to explore how the design of clothing, specifically the design of the suit, can create height illusions.
Background: Taller people enjoy many advantages, such as increased income and perceived attractiveness. These advantages motivate people to try to appear taller than they actually are, and clothing experts provide advice on how to accomplish this. However, there is little empirical evidence to validate the illusory effects clothing might have on overall height perception. The few studies that have explored illusions of body size created by clothing design have been limited in two important ways – …
Deconstructing Abject Complacency Of Ascribed Gender, Kyle M. Hooten
Deconstructing Abject Complacency Of Ascribed Gender, Kyle M. Hooten
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
My life has been dedicated to the relentless pursuit of masculinity throughout my transition from female to male. While originally focusing on the physical transition, my attention is now focused on the social aspects of transition. For me, this involved coming out, managing legal name/gender change paperwork, and understanding a newfound, cultural privilege. This is where I draw inspiration to create my work. My process and techniques are informed by Drag Kings and Queens as well as contemporary culture and art. After performing as a Drag King for a year I developed a sense of gender that differed from what …
Mindful Escapism, Kench Weathers
Mindful Escapism, Kench Weathers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the art work included in Kench Weathers’ MFA thesis exhibition. This work explores major themes such as the sacred, contemplation, optical illusion and paradox. The installations involve multiple three-dimensional geometric shapes that are formed with steel tubing (welded together). These works have various inspiration; both contemporary secular and sacred and are influenced by sacred paradox, both visual and ideological. The mixture of the two-dimensional with the three-dimensional creates multistable perception within the viewer. The work introduces visual and perceptual distortions of depth and dimensionality. These forms are nonrepresentational but act as a catalyst for the viewer. I …
Strange Rarities, Cori Crumrine
Strange Rarities, Cori Crumrine
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
‘Strange Rarities’ is a compelling and odd coupling of words, and similar to this body of work, this phrase both masks and reveals its references. ‘Strange’ defines something unfamiliar or extraordinary; ‘Rarity’ describes something that is uncommon, or the quality of being rare. Paired together, a ‘strange rarity’ refers to an object, a feeling, or a something, which discourages familiarity and excites wonder and awe.

Throughout the United States and particularly the West, public lands make up a large portion of land areaand are a vital, reusable, renewable resource that anyone can use. This body of work provides a visual representation of public land users. I’m looking at different user groups representing different activities, ages, genders, and geographic locations. My goal for this work is to make a visual impact on the public’s perspective of how these lands are use, and the people who use them.
All of these public land users have one thing in common: a sense of responsibility for the land, for …

The Empty Cup: Tea, Mythos, And Initiation Through Emergent Ritual, Katherine C. West

West, Katherine Church, M.A., Summer 2018
Master of Arts in Fine Arts, Integrated Arts and Education
Abstract
In our increasingly fast paced and busy world, the cultural value placed in ritual and ceremony has been lost. Yet, cultures for centuries have known the importance of such initiations to both usher us into and through important passages that mark a new time in our lives by deepening our awareness of our own lives and an understanding of the collective human experience.
This paper documents a two part project, one is the creation of a Gypsy Caravan, explored through the process of …
Comparative Pairs Judgements For High-Stakes Practical Assessments, Hendrati Nastiti
Comparative Pairs Judgements For High-Stakes Practical Assessments, Hendrati Nastiti
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Assessment of practical tasks, as opposed to that of theoretical tasks, has been considered to be problematic, mainly because it is usually resource intensive and the scoring is subjective. Most practical tasks need to be assessed on site or involve products that need to be collected, stored, or transported. Moreover, because practical tasks are generally open-ended, and therefore subjective, there is concern over the reliability of the scores. In high-stakes assessment, these problems are even more challenging. There is a need for an assessment method that could overcome these problems. In this study, such a method that will be referred …
