Thematic Manifestations: An Aesthetic Journey., Jeff Kise
Thematic Manifestations: An Aesthetic Journey., Jeff Kise
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis, in support of the Master of Fine Arts exhibition entitled Thematic Manifestations at East Tennessee State University, Carroll Reece Museum, Johnson City, Tennessee, March 2-12, 2004, describes in detail three aesthetic themes that are manifested in the work exhibited. The artist discusses his journey in establishing a “criterion of aesthetic values” whereby his work is conceptually developed. The three themes – The Paradox of Simplicity, The Decorative Power of Nature and The Beauty of the Irregular – are founded on historical and contemporary influences and are further described in practical application of form and process.

Art Theory & Design Process, Bryce W. Bushman
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Art is not an object; it is a process that has three components; the individual, the experience, and the expression. The individual is the person creating art and includes all of their unique complexities, recognizing that people are dynamic. The experience includes everything that goes on within and around the individual that results in, and links them to, the expression. The expression is the result of the individual's experience, a manifestation or product, which may be tactile and physical or abstract and psychological, usually both. Only one of the three components need be unique for art to occur. Design process …

Effects Of Accelerated Heat And Light Aging On Textiles Marked With Fabric Marking Pens, Janet Evenson, Patricia Cox Crews
Effects Of Accelerated Heat And Light Aging On Textiles Marked With Fabric Marking Pens, Janet Evenson, Patricia Cox Crews
Department of Textiles, Merchandising, and Fashion Design: Faculty Publications
Despite reasonable concerns that fabric marking pen inks may prove damaging over time, some quilters use them to temporarily mark quilting designs on quilt tops. Unfortunately, no published results concerning long-term effects of these products exist. The purpose of this study was to determine whether marking pen inks contribute to degradation or discoloration over time. Samples were marked with one of three brands of marking pen and subjected to ink removal treatments, followed by heat or light aging. Changes in color and breaking strength were measured before and after heat or light aging. Results showed that a water immersion ink …

Guide to exhibit held by Watkinson Library, 2004.
This exhibition grew out of an art history class taught by Professor Alden Gordon entitled “The Sublime, the Picturesque and the Romantic,” which focused on 18th century art with special emphasis on the book arts and printing. Supported by a Mellon Foundation course development grant for information literacy, the class aimed at developing the students’ visual literacy as the ability to understand art images and objects in their broader cultural and intellectual context.
Students were asked to select an illustrated book from the Watkinson Library printed during the 18th or early 19th …
Improving Knit Fabric Upf Using Consumer Laundry Products: A Comparison Of Results Using Two Instruments, Jihyun Kim , Janis Stone , Patricia Crews , Mack Shelley Ii, Kathryn L. Hatch
Improving Knit Fabric Upf Using Consumer Laundry Products: A Comparison Of Results Using Two Instruments, Jihyun Kim , Janis Stone , Patricia Crews , Mack Shelley Ii, Kathryn L. Hatch
Department of Textiles, Merchandising, and Fashion Design: Faculty Publications
This study investigated the use of two instruments to measure the ultraviolet protective factor (UPF) of T-shirt knit fabrics. After various laundering treatments, specimens were cut and UPF was measured from the wale, course, and bias directions with the ISO MET® UV-Meter and the Cary UV-Visible Spectrophotometer. Similar results were found between the two instruments and among repeated measures. Before UPF measurement, the shirt fabrics were repeatedly laundered using various household detergents and laundering additives commonly available to consumers. Statistically significant effects on the mean UPF values were found related to type of fabric, type of detergent/laundry additives, number of …

Taking In
This book is the second edition in the Taking In: series. As was the case in Taking In: I, the work, dedication, detail, and graphic design is extraordinary and impressive. The work submitted by our students, and selected by our distinguished judges, reflects the eclectic vision, visual intelligence, perception, and promise of a talented student body. Taking In: is truly a collaboration of the images, ideas, and talents from all departments at AIB. The concept has always been a simple one...to showcase the artistic diversity and vision of students who incorporate photography in heir personal artistic expression.

Traveling Stitches: Origins Of Fair Isle Knitting, Deborah Pulliam
Traveling Stitches: Origins Of Fair Isle Knitting, Deborah Pulliam
Textile Society of America Symposium Proceedings
The beginnings and "invention" of knitting has long fascinated knitters and amateur historians. Only recently has it come to be studied seriously, and there is still much folklore and fantasy repeated and published as history.
This paper (and discussion) considers some of the best known and most popular stories about the origins of Shetland and Fair Isle knitting and compares those with more recent considerations of color patterning in northern Europe, especially in the Baltic states and eastern Europe.
Fair Isle color patterning has been explained for many years as having been inspired by a wreck of the Spanish Armada …
