Tracing The Cultural Memory In The Rio Grande Valley: Mexican-American Dichos, Proverbs Interpreted Through Art, Jennifer Michele Rodriguez
Tracing The Cultural Memory In The Rio Grande Valley: Mexican-American Dichos, Proverbs Interpreted Through Art, Jennifer Michele Rodriguez
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
Conversational phrases, dichos are verbal hallmarks from Mexican-Americans and familiar to the Hispanic culture through different versions. This folk wisdom is exposed through communication, tracing historical accounts of life, love, struggle, and ultimately survival among Mexican-Americans. I have started a series of paintings and collective art pieces focusing on Mexican-American dichos unique and familiar to the Rio Grande Valley. They are a cultural representation of life unique to this area, and combine the recollective spirit from not only myself, but from my family's accounts of these spontaneous conversational phrases.
With influences stemming from the Pop Art period, specifically Roy Lichtenstein …

The Company Of Animals: A Nontoxic Approach., Bonnie K. Foss Boochard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This document investigates the concept of why man creates animal images and introduces the influences and focus of the artwork contained in the public exhibition. These original images focus on the similarities between animal and human personalities. Also included is a brief history of each "ink on paper" printmaking process used and a comparison of the results. All of the techniques discussed generally have a photographic process as their basis and use personal photographs and drawings for the foundation of each original print. In conclusion, areas for growth, enhancement, and future work are discussed, including a summary of the personal …
Chthonic Power Versus Synthetic Power: Iconography And Color Symbolizing The Female Principle Relative To The Male Principle, Kathryn M. Thorn-Simpson
Chthonic Power Versus Synthetic Power: Iconography And Color Symbolizing The Female Principle Relative To The Male Principle, Kathryn M. Thorn-Simpson
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
The images depict an exploration of an expressive, abstract aesthetic that delineates visual content with symbolism: depicted by color, iconography, and form. The artistic intention underlying the imagery is to evoke emotional awareness of the possibility that chthonic forces of nature—the mysterious life force generated by earth and the universe—in contrast to man-made synthetic powers—technology, science, machines, war, and ideas related to control over nature—are manifested as a dichotomy of experience between female and male; the forces of nature as the female principle and synthetic powers as the male principle. The imaginative elements in the imagery use colors and forms …

Trends. The Idolatry Of Ignorance And Iconoclasm: Notes On The Taliban, Ibpp Editor
Trends. The Idolatry Of Ignorance And Iconoclasm: Notes On The Taliban, Ibpp Editor
International Bulletin of Political Psychology
The New York Times has reported that at least some Taliban authorities have directed that all statues in Afghanistan--including those commonly viewed as priceless exemplars of cultural (largely Buddhist) heritage and as treasures--be destroyed. The Taliban's rationale--that these statues have been used as idols and deities by non-Islamic believers and may be turned into idols in the future--is largely discussed in the context of leading to a global cultural catastrophe, as an unacceptable decision, as gratuitous vandalism, as exemplifying a rigid ignorance deserving unique contempt and disgust.
“Amid The Great Sea Meadows”: Re-Constructing The Salt-Marsh Landscape Through Art And Literature, Kimberly R. Sebold
“Amid The Great Sea Meadows”: Re-Constructing The Salt-Marsh Landscape Through Art And Literature, Kimberly R. Sebold
Maine History
Salt marshes played an important role in northern New England agricultural from the colonial period to the twentieth century. While some coastal residents depended upon the natural grasses or salt hay to provide them with additional winter fodder, others transformed wetland into farmland through reclamation. The activities of salt marsh farmers created a whole new landscape which, ironically; late nineteenth-century artists and writers portrayed as the last vestiges of a “natural” landscape along the northern New England coast. Their paintings, photographs, poetry and stories established the salt marshes as an important part of coastal New England identity and aided the …

Mathematical Aspects Of Oriental Carpets, Carol Bier
Mathematical Aspects Of Oriental Carpets, Carol Bier
Carol Bier
The mathematical principles of pattern making according to symmetrical repetition are well-known today, but the mathematical aspects of pattern formation have been glossed over in the study of Oriental carpets, or neglected in favor of either an appreciation of color and form or a discussion of social and ethnic origins. This article seeks to address several mathematical aspects of Oriental carpets, which are both integral to their form and manifest in their visual make-up.
