Therapeutic Process Or Final Product? Views Of Artists Compared To Those Of Art Therapists, Katy Durler

Honors Theses

When someone approaches a piece of art, it is difficult to speculate by what standards the person evaluates the work. Surely people's backgrounds and personal tastes affect their reaction to a particular art piece, but suppose that a person evaluated art every day as part of his or her career. Do the standards of the job affect the person's method of evaluating art outside the office? Two professions that focus on the evaluation of art are art education and art therapy. In order to better understand the two fields in question, a basic knowledge of the development of expressionism in …

Ode To A Grand Staircase (For Four Hands), Julie Chen, Special Collections, Fleet Library

1 volume, 29 pages, pages cut in layers to resemble a staircase. "Ode to a Grand Staircase (For Four Hands) is a visual dialog created by Julie Chen and Barbara Tetenbaum, who found their inspiration in the work of composer Erik Satie. The text is derived from the musical directives and silent librettos which accompanied his scores. Thanks to Anna Sacramento for production assistance and to Claudia Wober for the translation. We dedicate this book to the memory of two men, Peter Chen and David Tetenbaum, whose lives inspired the music in our own"--Colophon. "The story in this book comes …

Tackling The Deficit - It Solutions For Art Appreciation - Needs Study And Provision Project At Primary School Level., Séan Ó Hargáin

Theses

This project looks at the changing environment in terms of the approach to the Visual Arts curriculum at Primary School level. It aims to provide an innovative solution to the art appreciation area, which is being given equal status with the art creation area, which traditionally has been the main focus of the curriculum.

The Project includes a review of the curricular climate, both at home and abroad. In this context it focusses particularly on the role of Information Technology in addressing access problems from those living remote from major population, and therefore major artistic centres.

Primary Research included involved …

Making Sense Of The Senses: The Body The Brain And Modern Art, Will South Jan 2001

Making Sense Of The Senses: The Body The Brain And Modern Art, Will South

Sheldon Museum of Art: Catalogs and Publications

Imagine, as so many artists, musicians, writers, poets and dreamers have tried to do so many times in so many ways, a universal language-one that could be understood by anyone in any place at any time. However implausible such a language may seem, however romantic, naive, or flatly impossible, its creation in visual terms was a common pursuit of early modern painters, those working in the first decades of the 20th century. At the beginning of this new millennium, we may ask afresh if all these past imaginings and pursuits were but elegant and finely wrought pipe dreams, or if …

The Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery and Sculpture Garden is pleased to present The Visual Culture of PRAIRIE SCHOONER, an exhibition of forty images from the pages of one of the more distinguished literary magazines in the country. This exhibition explores the role that visual imagery has played in this important and influential magazine. If, as Henry Rago asserts, "a …

Review Of William Blake, Antoni Pizà Jan 2001

Review Of William Blake, Antoni Pizà

Publications and Research

Although William Blake is the quintessential multidisciplinary artist – his achievements in literature and the visual arts are for the most part uncontested – as far as we know, he was never particularly interested in music. Indeed, neither his poetry nor his pictures describe or depict music directly. Yet, in the last 200 years or so, his work has made an astounding mark on composers and music. One sees Blake's influence primarily in the numberless musical settings of his poems, but also in more general, indefinite, and ineffable way – a very Blake-ian one, I am tempted to say. I …

Abbott H. Thayer's Anticipation Of A Computer-Based Method Of Working, Roy R. Behrens

Faculty Publications

This article describes the practice of Abbott H. Thayer (1849-1921) of working on several copies of the same painting, taking each to a different conclusion. It compares that method to the current computer-based practice of using the SAVE AS command to create copies of a digital artwork or design, which can then also be taken to different conclusions.

1000 PIECES: SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED is a wearable art coat incorporating approximately 1000 removable pieces that may be assembled to create a variety of surface designs. The concept is based on a jigsaw puzzle. The aesthetic inspiration came from ancient Chinese armor composed of small metal scales decoratively arranged and affixed to a background fabric. The coat is designed especially for those who enjoy assembling a jigsaw puzzle or creating their own unique designs.
