L’Art Post-Catastrophe : Un Témoin Activiste, Michel Abou Khalil
L’Art Post-Catastrophe : Un Témoin Activiste, Michel Abou Khalil
BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior

Portrait Of Same-Sex Desire: Lesbian (Mis)Representations In Nineteenth-Century French Art, Jessica N. Mummert
Portrait Of Same-Sex Desire: Lesbian (Mis)Representations In Nineteenth-Century French Art, Jessica N. Mummert
Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal
In late nineteenth-century France, lesbianism became a heightened topic of interest due to scientific, social, and political discourse surrounding female sexuality. From this discourse stemmed a small but significant outpouring of lesbian artworks by male artists. Rendering the lesbian as a hypervisible, hypersexual figure for men to project their desires and fears onto, these artworks communicated concerns over sexuality, morality, feminism, class, and gender roles. Traditionally, historiography on this topic tends to focus on one mode of lesbian representation at a time or discusses lesbian art en masse. This scholarship has highlighted some different representations and the social circumstances that …

Influence Of Subjective Determinants On Personal Formation, Mahmud Majitov
The Light of Islam
The article provides a structural and functional analysis of the social essence of an individual, the patterns of its formation, the problems of relationships between society and the individual, reveals the features of its development. Social and negative aspects of modern social development, the development of science and technology, the growth of a person’s intellectual potential increase attention to the problem of personality. Complex developments, dramatic changes in the relationship between man, society, and nature, in turn, indicate the need for social research in this regard. It is necessary to study the dialectical relations between postmodern society and the individual, …

Literary figures F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald make an appearance in this wry work calling to mind the Sunday comics of Winsor McCay. The Prohibition era story is told with a modern twist, as characters drink from juice boxes. Their heads are drawn as speech bubbles as a commentary on how we are all our thoughts and words/actions.

Runner-up award in the 2022 Jurgen Banned Art Comics Contest.
Playing with sight gags and double-entendre, this comic refers to James Branch Cabell's own response to New York Society for the Suppression of Vice censor John S. Sumner. Cabell wrote a satirical fable called "The Judging of Jurgen," featuring a tumblebug, or dung beetle, who made accusations against King Jurgen in the court of Philistia.
Intersection Cographs And Aesthetics, Robert Haas
Intersection Cographs And Aesthetics, Robert Haas
Journal of Humanistic Mathematics
Cographs are complete graphs with colored lines (edges); in an intersection cograph, the points (vertices) and lines (edges) are labeled by sets, and the line between each pair of points is (or represents) their intersection. This article first presents the elementary theory of intersection cographs: 15 are possible on 4 points; constraints on the triangles and quadrilaterals; some forbidden configurations; and how, under suitable constraints, to generate the points from the lines alone. The mathematical theory is then applied to aesthetics, using set cographs to describe the experience of a person enjoying a picture (Mu Qi), poem (Dickinson), play (Shakespeare), …
Why Art And Design Matters, Leah J. Berkowitz
Why Art And Design Matters, Leah J. Berkowitz
WWU Honors College Senior Projects
This capstone is an exploration of the history and development of art and design within China, from the beginnings of drawing and printing from over 2500 years ago, all the way to the Tiananmen Square Protests of 1989 and the current day Covid-19 lockdown protests. We look at how art and design both shaped society and was itself shaped during these pivotal moments in Chinese history. Through this research we can begin to understand the power and influence of art and design worldwide, and the incredible importance of nationwide art funding and education within our own society.

Theater And Spectacle Of The Inside, Dante G. Cannatella
Theater And Spectacle Of The Inside, Dante G. Cannatella
Theses and Dissertations
Dante Cannatella’s work is about when the landscape reclaims the city, when the lines between inside and outside are blurred, and how lives play out against the truth of uncertainty and impermanence. His gestural paintings reflect growing up amidst the destruction and rebuilding of New Orleans. Set against a backdrop of acid yellows, muddy pinks and greys, the figures are caught in the powerful forces of nature, commerce, and mass thought that shape both their inner worlds and outer realities.

Laser Cutting And Engraving – Designing In The Digital Age, Emily Ward
Summer Scholarship, Creative Arts and Research Projects (SCARP)
Laser cutting and engraving uses are broad and have many application purposes in both Visual Arts and Engineering. Gaining an understanding of the hardware and software necessary for students to successfully use the Universal Laser Systems M‑300 laser cutter in the Engineering Fabrication Lab will open possibilities for both art and engineering projects at our school. After testing a series of materials including birch wood blocks, ceramics, and acrylics to find the correct settings for laser cutting, CorelDRAW software was used to design custom drawings to be laser cut or etched. The printmaking blocks were laser cut for prints to …

This paper describes “Kalos, eîdos, skopeîn,” an immersive Dhrupad-based dance installation designed to elicit feelings of awe in the spectators, in a real-life artistic context. This study used a mixed-methods approach in order to explore spectators’ awe experience (N=45), using specific scales and interpretative phenomenological analysis. Results suggested that “Kalos, eîdos, skopeîn,” with its combination of nature motifs and the slow dance-walk associated with the Dhrupad music in the choreography, was able to produce awe-related moments in some spectators and inspire a degree of positive emotions. Our qualitative results viewed awe explicitly as a positive emotion and showed that generally …

Choreographing The Line: Exploring The Art/Obscenity Paradox Of Feminine Sexuality Within The Context Of Recreational Pole Dance, Cameron Boucher-Khan
Scripps Senior Theses
This project seeks to explore the relationships between pole dance and pole fitness, art and obscenity and respectability as it relates to work, class, and social systems. It analyzes the way female sexuality is accepted or rejected within society and explores the boundaries between the two through the staging of pole and contemporary dance. The dichotomy between art and obscenity is explored in the relationship between stripper pole dance, and the fast-growing pole fitness community. Within this relationship, strippers are demonized as obscene, while pole fitness dancers' labor is viewed as artistic, despite the sexuality present in both. The difference …

Tangled Roots: Exploring Appalachian Feminisms, Magenta Palo
Graduate Thesis Exhibition Catalogue Gallery, 2022
Women have long been overlooked as key figures in the cultural history of Appalachia. The exhibition Tangled Roots: Exploring Appalachian Feminisms seeks to examine the ways in which women artists across the region have kept traditions alive while redefining creative practices that were once seen strictly as “women’s work.” In particular, the exhibition aims to explore how women have reimagined “craft” through skillful attention to materials, manual dexterity, and application of critical and conceptual rigor. The concept of craft is defined in this context to include all hand-made work that requires developed skills, whether they belong to traditional craft-based practices …
