The purpose of this thesis study was to explore various ways of producing creative photographs by manipulating an image as well as its plastic elements. The main areas of investigation included image and color separation, which produced new elements in the photographs. These elements synthetically created an image that was different from the original and had acquired a new meaning through the artist. This study should not be thought of as complete or final but infinite in its possibilities and extensions.

Plactic is the material I chose to communicate my ideas. Named for its ability to be shaped, melted, bent, moulded, and extruded into an infinite number of forms, is one of two reasons I used it. The other is its concept is familiar to modern man and even a definition of him.

To make the communication bridge complete the stulptures are constructed to allow the viewer to take part in the final form. By moving the work, he is as involved in the concept, form, and material as I have been in making the piece.

This paper presents a series of ideas underlying the philosophy behind the creation of the author's works. The paper deals with the creator-viewer relationship, and the distinction that is commonly accepted as existing between the perception of the two, ascribing more value on the perception of one over that of the other. The conclusions were reached after acute observation of occurrences of everyday as a source of esthetic experience and after lengthy discussions with people involved in the creative process.

This thesis is devoted only to that work considered completely investigated: a portrait/figure series of seven paintings. In addition, the series of works with which this thesis is devoted essentially follow this format: large areas of architectural space and color versus a natural object- -a portrait figure. A play or conflict was set up between these two things; the success of the play determined the success of the painting. In discussing the prints and drawings chosen for this study, I wish to consider mostly subject matter and composition, giving less mention to technique. The three forms of printmaking used are intaglio, collagraph, and woodcut. A specific theme was not chosen for these prints. The thesis problem involved the development of a series of watercolor paintings within a ritualistic format; the standardization of approach resulted in the development of a personal iconography. This iconography was secondary to the total work however.
